If your settings disappeared after reinstalling new Outlook for Windows, sign in to the same account first. Reinstalling the app and adding an account are setup steps, not a documented way to recover every preference. If you were moving from classic Outlook, Microsoft provides a separate import that can be retried: in new Outlook, open Settings > Accounts > Your accounts, select Manage beside the top (primary) account, and choose Get Started. This distinction matters because an account sign-in cannot recreate a preference that was never included in the documented migration, and Windows app repair is not a settings-backup feature.

1. Confirm the app and sign in to the intended account
New Outlook and classic Outlook are separate Windows applications with different setup behavior. Before changing settings, verify that you opened new Outlook for Windows, not the classic desktop client.
- Open new Outlook from the Start menu.
- Check the account shown in the app. Use the same Microsoft account, work or school account, or third-party mailbox that you used before the reinstall.
- If no account appears, follow Outlook’s prompts to add one.
- For a Microsoft Store installation, Microsoft’s reinstall guidance says to select Get to download the app, or Open if it is already installed. Adding an account is a separate step.
New Outlook supports Microsoft accounts, work or school accounts and third-party accounts including Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud; other third-party mailboxes may connect through IMAP. The account type can affect whether automatic sign-in succeeds, so do not assume that a successful installation means the correct mailbox is connected. 2. Check the classic Outlook migration prerequisite
Use this section only if classic Outlook still exists on the computer and you want its preferences in new Outlook. Microsoft’s documented import is classic-to-new migration; it is not described as a general backup restore for settings created only in new Outlook.

- Open classic Outlook.
- Go to General settings.
- Find Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook).
- Select the option, then restart classic Outlook as requested.
If this option was not enabled, Microsoft does not say that new Outlook can reconstruct the old classic profile automatically. Enabling it now gives the migration process the prerequisite Microsoft specifies, but it does not turn a reinstall into a guaranteed recovery of every preference.
3. Retry the import in new Outlook
After confirming the classic Outlook option, start the migration from new Outlook. The control is located under the account that Outlook treats as primary.
- In new Outlook, open Settings.
- Select Accounts, then Your accounts.
- Identify the top-most account. Microsoft describes this as the primary account.
- Select Manage beside that account.
- Choose Get Started to retry the classic-to-new settings import.
Do not select a secondary mailbox expecting it to import the profile for the primary account. If Get Started is not shown, first recheck that classic Outlook is installed, that the cloud-settings option was selected there and that you are signed into the intended account in new Outlook.

What the documented import can bring over
Microsoft lists specific mail and calendar preferences that new Outlook can import from classic Outlook during first-time setup. The list is useful when checking whether a missing option should have been included.

This table describes the categories Microsoft names; it is not a promise that every individual customization, add-in configuration or new Outlook-only control is included. If a setting is absent after a successful import and is not represented by these documented categories, Microsoft’s guidance does not establish an automatic recovery path for it.
Why reinstalling new Outlook may not restore every preference
Installing the app again creates a usable Outlook client and lets you connect accounts. Microsoft’s installation instructions do not say that the reinstall restores all preferences previously set inside new Outlook.
The documented import has a narrower purpose: it transfers listed settings from classic Outlook into new Outlook. That means three different outcomes are possible:
- Classic settings available: the cloud option is enabled and the import can be retried with Manage > Get Started.
- No classic profile to import: Microsoft says new Outlook uses default settings when there are no classic Outlook settings to migrate.
- New Outlook-only preferences: the cited Microsoft guidance does not guarantee that reinstalling recovers them or that every preference is backed up.
Consequently, a clean reinstall followed by a correct sign-in can still leave you with default layout, notification or calendar choices. That result does not necessarily indicate a failed installation.
Use Outlook on the web as a comparison point
Microsoft says that changes made in new Outlook are also reflected in Outlook on the web. Open Outlook on the web with the same account and compare a setting that is missing in the desktop app.
- If the web version shows the preference, note its exact value and set the desktop option to match.
- If both versions show the default, the preference may not have survived the reinstall or may not be part of the documented classic import.
- If the desktop and web interfaces expose different controls, do not infer that one is a complete backup of the other.
This comparison is diagnostic. Microsoft does not characterize web reflection as a complete backup for every new Outlook preference, so it should not replace the classic migration procedure or a record of important personal choices. When to use Windows Repair or Reset
Use Windows app repair when the problem is functional—such as a crash, hang or damaged installation—not simply that a preference is missing. Windows may expose these controls in the app’s Advanced options.
- Open Windows Settings and locate the installed-app entry for new Outlook.
- Open the app’s Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test Outlook again.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not fix the malfunction, Windows may offer Reset.
Microsoft’s Repair apps and programs in Windows page describes Repair and Reset as general app troubleshooting. The cited guidance does not promise that either action restores Outlook settings or preserves every preference. Treat Reset as a more disruptive troubleshooting step, and make sure you know the account credentials before using it.
Troubleshoot by the symptom you see
The account list is empty after reinstall
Sign in or add the mailbox again. A Microsoft Store reinstall may not add every account automatically. Confirm the account address and type before judging whether settings were restored. If you previously used several accounts, make sure the one shown at the top of Your accounts is the intended primary account before attempting migration.
The migration button is missing
Check the primary account position under Settings > Accounts > Your accounts. Then verify the classic Outlook cloud-settings option and restart classic Outlook. The import control is tied to the primary account, not an arbitrary secondary mailbox. If classic Outlook is not installed or no longer contains the old profile, the documented prerequisite cannot be checked on that computer.
Only some settings returned
Compare the missing items with Microsoft’s documented mail and calendar categories. Items such as conversation grouping, reading-pane position, signatures, auto-replies, notifications, Focused/Other, Quick Steps, default font, meeting hours and time-zone choices are explicitly listed. A preference outside that list may require manual reconfiguration because Microsoft does not promise complete recovery of every new Outlook-only setting.

There is no classic profile available to supply the documented import. New Outlook will use its defaults when there are no classic Outlook settings to migrate. Reinstalling new Outlook alone is not documented as a substitute for that source profile.
The web version and desktop version disagree
Sign in to Outlook on the web with exactly the same account, then compare one setting at a time. Microsoft says changes made in new Outlook are reflected on the web, but the guidance does not say that every control has identical wording or that the web interface is a complete settings archive. Use the comparison to identify values to re-enter manually.

Outlook still crashes or freezes
Follow the startup troubleshooting path: use Windows Repair when offered, then consider Reset if Repair is unavailable or ineffective. Keep this separate from settings recovery; fixing a damaged app does not establish that preferences will reappear.

What to record before changing anything
If Outlook still opens on another computer or in the old installation, make a short manual inventory before uninstalling or resetting. Record the account addresses, which account should be primary, the signature text and assignment, notification choices, reading-pane position, dark-mode preference, calendar time zone, working days and meeting-time choices. This is not a Microsoft backup feature; it is a practical checklist for preferences that may need to be entered again.

Keep account credentials available, especially before using Windows Reset. If a mailbox uses Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud or another IMAP connection, expect to follow that provider’s sign-in prompts rather than assuming the Microsoft account sign-in will add it automatically. The supported account types explain why two installations can show different account lists even when the Windows app version is the same.
A practical order for future reinstalls
When you can still open the old setup, this sequence reduces confusion during the next reinstall:
- Write down the account addresses and whether each is Microsoft, work or school, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud or another IMAP account.
- If classic Outlook is the source, enable Store my Outlook settings in the cloud (requires restarting Outlook) in General, then restart classic Outlook.
- Install or open new Outlook from the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in and add any account that was not detected automatically.
- Run Settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Manage beside the primary account, then select Get Started.
- Check the imported mail and calendar categories, and compare a few account-linked choices with Outlook on the web.
- Manually restore any preference outside Microsoft’s listed import categories.
- Only use Windows Repair or Reset if the application itself is malfunctioning.
