Oregon State University researchers report that a new metal-organic framework, BVR-X, captured carbon dioxide from a highly humid gas stream containing 4% CO₂ and was reused through dozens of capture-and-release cycles. Its design separates preferred water and CO₂ regions inside the material’s pores, a potential way to address a common obstacle in industrial carbon capture. The work is still at the research stage: the university says a patent application has been filed, but its announcement does not establish commercial readiness or full-scale operation.
Why water makes carbon capture harder
Industrial exhaust can contain both carbon dioxide and water vapor. Water can compete with CO₂ for adsorption sites in a capture material, reducing its performance. Drying the gas first may help, but Oregon State University says the added cost can undermine industrial viability. The university’s announcement attributes the statement that 30% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from industry to the Environmental Protection Agency; it does not specify a year for that figure.

How BVR-X is designed to handle humid gas
BVR-X is a metal-organic framework (MOF), a crystalline material assembled from metal ions and organic linker molecules. MOFs have nanoscale pores that can adsorb gases, and their structures can be tuned. In BVR-X, the reported pore organization directs water and carbon dioxide toward different regions, reducing the chance that water blocks locations used for CO₂ capture. Oregon State chemistry professor Kyriakos Stylianou described the internal organization as helping the material work under conditions more like industrial emissions.
What the reported test shows—and does not show
The university says BVR-X captured CO₂ from a highly humid stream containing 4% CO₂, a composition it describes as relevant to natural-gas combustion emissions. It also reports that the material was regenerated and reused over dozens of capture-and-release cycles. These are promising findings for a water-tolerant adsorbent, but they do not demonstrate capture from a full-scale flue stack or establish how the material would perform in a plant.

The announcement does not give a numerical adsorption capacity, selectivity, exact humidity level, regeneration energy cost, or side-by-side comparison with other materials. Those measurements are essential for judging how much CO₂ a sorbent can capture, how selectively it does so, and what it costs in energy to reuse. Without them, BVR-X cannot be quantitatively ranked against alternatives based on the announcement alone.
Is BVR-X ready for industrial use?
Not on the evidence reported by the university. Oregon State announced on October 1, 2026, that researchers had filed a patent application. A filing is not proof that a patent has been granted, that the material has been licensed, or that it is commercially available. The announcement reports laboratory research and cycle reuse, not pilot-scale or commercial deployment.

Oregon State says more than 100,000 MOFs have been synthesized, with many more structures predicted. That broader field makes direct, like-for-like performance data especially important: a promising pore design is a research advance, not by itself evidence of a practical or lower-cost capture process.
