New Linux Foundation Project Accelerates Collaboration on Container Systems

On November 30, 2021, the Linux Foundation announced that it would host the Singularity container project, which was newly named Apptainer. The move was presented as a way to bring high-performance computing (HPC), enterprise and cloud communities together around an open container system. The announcement is historical; it is not a current launch notice or an independent performance study.

What the 2021 announcement changed

Singularity became Apptainer in connection with its move to Linux Foundation hosting. The foundation said its role would provide a neutral home for development and make collaboration with related open-source communities easier.

Gregory Kurtzer, CIQ CEO and founder and project lead of Singularity/Apptainer, described the rationale: “The Linux Foundation is the natural host for Apptainer, where it can also collaborate with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Open Container Initiative, OpenHPC and other projects to expand its ecosystem.”

The announcement identified a divide between HPC and enterprise/cloud environments. HPC practitioners were increasingly interested in enterprise technologies, while enterprise users could draw on HPC experience with performance and parallelization. Apptainer was positioned as a project where those groups could work on shared container technology rather than developing in isolation.

Capabilities listed by the Linux Foundation

The press release attributes the following capabilities to Apptainer. It does not give software versions, deployment configurations, comparative benchmarks or independent security testing, so these points should be read as announced project features rather than verified test results.

Area What the announcement says
Image trust Public/private-key signing for containers.
Compatibility Compatibility with Docker and the Open Container Initiative (OCI).
Confidentiality and management Container encryption and integration with Vault and other management platforms.
Packaging A single-file SIF (Singularity Image Format) executable container format.
Privilege model Rootless operation and a prohibition on privilege escalation within a container.
Accelerators and infrastructure Support for GPUs, FPGAs, high-speed networks and filesystems.

Why HPC and enterprise users were the focus

HPC workloads

HPC systems often combine batch schedulers, specialized interconnects, shared filesystems and accelerators. A container system for that setting must fit those existing resources without requiring every user to have administrator privileges. The announcement highlighted Apptainer’s rootless model, hardware support and single-file image format in this context.

Enterprise and cloud workloads

Enterprise teams commonly need portable application packaging, image policy, signing, encryption and integration with operational management systems. The announcement presented Docker/OCI compatibility and management integrations as ways Apptainer could connect HPC practices with enterprise container workflows.

A shared open-source governance model

Linux Foundation senior vice president and general manager of projects Mike Dolan said the foundation wanted to support the community and enable “cross collaboration with even more open source developers and technologists to expand its ecosystem of contributors.” Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory scientific computing lead Gary Jung likewise said the timing was right to move the technology to the Linux Foundation so HPC and enterprise communities could build it together.

What the announcement does—and does not—prove

  • The dated event is a hosting and project-name transition: Singularity became Apptainer under Linux Foundation stewardship.
  • The stated objective is cross-community collaboration among HPC, enterprise, cloud and neighboring open-source projects.
  • The listed signing, encryption, compatibility, rootless execution, packaging and hardware features are claims made in the press release.
  • The release calls Apptainer “the most widely used container system for High-Performance (HPC) computing,” but supplies no adoption count, study, date range or methodology. That wording should not be converted into a quantified market-share claim.
  • No comparative benchmark or independently verified security assessment appears in the announcement.

How to interpret the project today

For readers evaluating the announcement, the practical takeaway is governance and intended scope rather than a benchmarked winner. Apptainer was presented as an open project designed to run across specialized HPC environments and enterprise-oriented workflows, with portability and non-root execution as important themes.

Current commands, supported versions, integrations and security behavior can change after the 2021 transition. Consult the project’s current news and documentation before making an implementation decision: Apptainer project news. The original project transition was also discussed by Kurtzer in his November 30, 2021 community message: “Singularity has joined the Linux Foundation!”.

The Bottom Line

The November 30, 2021 announcement marked Singularity’s transition to Linux Foundation hosting and its new name, Apptainer, with a stated aim of connecting HPC and enterprise container communities. Its feature and adoption language came from the announcement; it did not include quantitative adoption data, comparative benchmarks or independent testing.
