New game IP vs. established franchises: what players gain and risk

New game IP gives players a chance to discover an unfamiliar world, cast and set of rules. An established franchise gives them a recognizable starting point, but also brings expectations that can limit or enrich the experience. Neither route guarantees quality, sales or long-term success. The practical question is whether a particular game communicates a strong promise and delivers on it, how much creative freedom its team has, and what assumptions players bring to the purchase.

What “new IP” and “established franchise” mean

In everyday game-business language, “IP” often means a recognizable property or franchise. Legally, intellectual property is broader: it can include copyrights, trademarks, characters, stories, art, technology and contractual rights. A new game IP is a property that does not depend on an existing game series, film, novel or comic. An established franchise extends a known property through a sequel, remake, spin-off, reboot or another licensed game.

The distinction is not always absolute. A new game may use familiar genre conventions, a licensed setting or a studio’s existing technology while still introducing an original world. Conversely, a sequel can alter its mechanics, tone or structure so substantially that it feels new to players. Evaluate the specific release rather than assuming that “original” means experimental or that “franchise” means repetitive.

The short answer: what players gain and risk

Player concern New game IP Established franchise
Entry point Requires the game to explain its premise, world and appeal clearly. Recognizable characters, fiction or systems can make the premise easier to understand.
Creative range More room to set rules, change tone and invent a new cast, subject to the team’s contracts and publisher constraints. Existing continuity and audience expectations can restrict choices, while also providing a foundation to build on.
Expectation load Players have fewer assumptions, so surprises may land more easily; unclear positioning can make discovery difficult. Fans know what they want preserved and may react strongly when a sequel changes core elements.
Audience discovery Awareness and trust must usually be built from the ground up. An existing community can reduce discovery or audience risk, but does not make demand certain.
Long-term opportunity A successful world can support sequels, adaptations or merchandise and may strengthen a creator’s bargaining position. The property already has continuity and commercial pathways, but rights and decisions may be divided among owners.
Main player risk The concept may not justify its learning curve, price or time investment. The game may feel overfamiliar, mishandle beloved elements or disappoint expectations.

These are tendencies, not outcomes. WIPO’s 2024 analysis emphasizes that game popularity is difficult to predict and that existing IP can lower some commercial risk without making a project safe. Game quality, genre, budget, marketing, launch timing and platform access remain decisive variables.

What players gain from a new game IP

A world without continuity homework

An original property can introduce its setting, characters and conflicts without asking newcomers to remember decades of backstory. That can make the first hour more welcoming and lets the team decide which information matters. Players who value discovery may enjoy forming their own understanding rather than comparing every detail with an earlier entry.

Room for a distinct premise

Without an established canon, designers can combine mechanics, themes and perspectives that would be difficult to fit into a familiar series. A new IP can change the role of the player character, use an unusual narrative structure or build a world around a system that has no precedent in the franchise’s history. This does not guarantee innovation: a new title can still imitate existing genres. It simply removes one layer of continuity.

The possibility of a new long-term identity

If players respond to an original world, its creator can develop that identity over multiple games. WIPO notes that developers may choose original IP for artistic reasons and to improve their bargaining position with publishers. That is a potential advantage, not proof of ownership. A studio can create a game while a publisher, investor or another company controls the relevant rights under contract.

A fresh relationship between team and audience

New properties can give a team permission to listen, adjust and establish conventions alongside the audience. Nadia Thorne, CEO and Producer at Black Salt Games, described the choice this way in Unity’s 2025 Gaming Report: “However, creating something new can reinspire the team, open up opportunities for even bigger success, and bring fresh ideas back to the original IP…” A new project can therefore benefit the creators as well as players, although production pressure can still narrow its scope.

What players risk with a new IP

Discovery takes work

A recognizable logo can communicate genre, tone or quality expectations before a player sees a trailer. An original title must make that case itself. Marketing may need to explain its setting, mechanics and audience, and players may wait for reviews, demonstrations or recommendations before committing. This is a discovery cost, not evidence that the game is inferior.

The premise may be clearer than the finished game

Original concepts often attract attention through a striking setting or hook. The important test is whether that idea remains engaging through the full campaign or live-service cycle. Ask what the player repeatedly does, how the game adds depth, and whether the central promise survives beyond the opening presentation.

Less established support infrastructure

A new property may have fewer guides, community explanations, accessibility discussions and troubleshooting resources at launch. Players who need reliable information about difficulty, performance or online population may face more uncertainty. Early adopters can help build that knowledge, but they also bear more of the risk when launch problems appear.

Success is difficult to predict

WIPO’s 2024 working paper on innovation and intellectual-property use in the global video-game industry describes substantial upfront investment, rising costs and uncertainty. A new IP can fail despite a compelling idea, just as a franchise can fail despite recognition. Do not treat originality as a reliable quality signal.

What players gain from an established franchise

Immediate legibility

Familiar characters, visual language or combat systems can tell a returning player what kind of experience to expect. That can shorten the decision process and make a new entry feel approachable, especially when the game supports newcomers with an optional story recap or a self-contained campaign. Familiarity is a head start, not proof that the new release is good.

Refined foundations

A long-running series may have years of feedback, testing and iteration behind its controls, interface and online systems. A sequel can spend less time inventing basic conventions and more time improving them. The trade-off is that established conventions may become constraints if the team cannot change what no longer serves the game.

Communities and shared moments

Existing players can supply matchmaking partners, discussion, competitive events and fan-created resources from day one. That community can make a multiplayer release more viable and help a single-player game reach people who already care about its world. It can also create a sharper divide between experienced players and newcomers, so check whether the design offers onboarding.

More ways to extend the experience

Franchises can support sequels, downloadable content, esports, licensing and adaptations. Those extensions may fund continued updates or preserve a setting that players value. They can also encourage a publisher to prioritize predictable expansions over riskier design changes.

What players risk with an established franchise

Expectation pressure

Fans usually have a view of which characters, mechanics, tone and themes define a series. A release that changes too little can feel like a minor update; one that changes too much can feel disconnected. The best sequels identify the elements that carry the series’ identity and deliberately explain what is changing.

Franchise fatigue

WIPO warns that overusing sequels and spin-offs can produce fatigue. Fatigue is a risk, not an inevitable result of making another entry. A sequel can remain valuable when it solves a real design problem, offers a meaningful new structure or reaches a new audience without discarding the series’ core appeal.

Continuity and access barriers

A new entry may assume knowledge of earlier stories, require familiarity with a large roster or lock important context behind older platforms. Check whether the game stands on its own and whether prior purchases are genuinely necessary. A familiar brand does not automatically make a game accessible to first-time players.

Commercial decisions can outweigh creative ones

A strong brand may encourage annual releases, cross-promotion or monetization systems that do not fit every game. Recognition can attract attention while also increasing the number of business objectives the team must satisfy. Look at the actual feature set, pricing and support plan rather than inferring intent from the logo.

How familiarity and novelty can coexist

WIPO describes the industry challenge as balancing consumers’ desire for novelty with their desire for some familiarity. A franchise entry does not need to repeat every old feature, and a new IP still needs a legible promise. Players can use a simple test: identify what remains recognizable, what is genuinely different and whether the difference improves the play experience.

For a franchise release

  • Core identity: Which activities, relationships or rules make this series recognizable?
  • Meaningful change: Does the new system alter decisions, strategies or emotional stakes, rather than only changing presentation?
  • Onboarding: Can a newcomer understand the controls, story and progression without having played every prior title?

For a new IP

  • Player promise: Can the game explain its central fantasy in one or two concrete sentences?
  • Repeatable appeal: What will remain interesting after the novelty of the setting wears off?
  • Familiar anchors: Does it use recognizable genre conventions or interface patterns to help players learn?

What current industry figures actually show

Unity’s 2025 Gaming Report surveyed 300 developers through a Cint computer-assisted telephone interview. Unity gives that survey a margin of error of plus or minus 5.66 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. The figures describe developers’ chosen primary growth strategies, not player preferences or the percentage of games released in each category.

Primary strategy selected Share of surveyed developers What the figure does—and does not—mean
Maximize an existing game 62% Includes updates, deeper market penetration and platform reach; it is not a count of sequels.
Develop new ideas in a different genre 23% Shows a stated growth approach among respondents, not proof that players prefer genre changes.
Develop new ideas in the same genre 10% Reflects respondents’ strategy choices, not the number of original-IP releases.
Develop IP into multiple games 5% Indicates a selected growth strategy; it does not establish that a franchise will succeed.

The report also contains separate event surveys, so those results should not automatically be attributed to the 300-person sample. The data supports the observation that many developers seek value from existing games, while a substantial minority pursue new ideas. It cannot answer whether original or franchise games produce higher satisfaction, retention or sales after controlling for genre, budget, quality, marketing, timing and platform.

How common are games based on prior IP?

WIPO’s 2024 World Intellectual Property Report analyzed MobyGames data covering 1950–2018. It estimated that 11.6% to 14.6% of new games, excluding sequels, were based on prior IP such as films, novels or comics. The range is not a direct original-versus-franchise comparison: sequels are excluded, and “prior IP” is defined broadly. Treat it as historical context about adaptation, not as a current market share or a measure of player demand.

WIPO also notes that existing IP can be a lower-risk venture because an established fan base may be more willing to spend on a new game. “Lower risk” here means reduced discovery or audience uncertainty; it does not remove development, quality or commercial risk.

Case study: how Tekken adapted without abandoning its core

Bandai Namco’s 2024 Integrated Report describes Tekken’s transition from arcades to home consoles. The company says the series preserved its central appeal of bringing players and spectators together while adding character narratives, a story mode and mini-games for the home-console audience. It also describes fan feedback as an input to development and marketing.

This is a company account of one franchise, not evidence that the same formula works for every series. Its lesson is more limited and more useful: continuity can identify a core social or mechanical appeal, while platform changes create reasons to add new forms of play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Tekken 8, released in January 2024, Bandai Namco reported one million copies shipped worldwide on launch day and more than two million during the following month. The company attributed part of the performance to a simultaneous worldwide home-console release. Those figures are company-reported results and should not be presented as proof that franchise status alone caused the sales. Bandai Namco also describes ongoing esports, licensing and other efforts to extend the series.

What the developer perspective adds

Black Salt Games’ Nadia Thorne summarized the creative trade-off in Unity’s 2025 report: “It’s a balance between what the creative team has left to give and what our players want.” She also said, “Expanding an IP often makes financial sense and is great for fans who want more of what they already love.” The opposing pressure is not simply artistic versus commercial; a known property can help fund ambitious work, while a new property can restore creative energy.

Thorne’s final test was whether a project is meaningful to both sides: “Ultimately the decision comes down to whether we’re delivering something meaningful for both our players and ourselves.” That standard is useful for players because it shifts attention from labels to execution. A sequel made with a clear purpose can be more inventive than an original game built from borrowed conventions.

Hermen Hulst, then head of PlayStation Studios, called new IP “the lifeblood of gaming” in a PlayStation Blog interview published June 2, 2021. The same interview’s statement that more than 25 titles were in development, almost half new IP, was a historical snapshot of that portfolio, not a current count or an industry-wide ratio.

A player’s decision framework before buying

  1. State the promise. Write down the activity, fantasy or problem the game says you will experience. If the promise is vague, wait for hands-on coverage.
  2. Separate recognition from evidence. A familiar name can justify attention, but inspect previews, demonstrations and independent technical information for the actual release.
  3. Check the learning burden. For a new IP, look for tutorials, genre conventions and a clear explanation of progression. For a franchise, confirm whether the game recaps prior events and teaches returning systems.
  4. Identify the meaningful change. In a sequel, ask what has changed in combat, exploration, story structure, multiplayer or progression. In a new IP, ask what its distinctive system does that familiar games do not.
  5. Assess launch conditions. Verify platform availability, performance reports, online population, accessibility features and whether essential content is present at release.
  6. Judge the time and money risk. A lower-cost purchase, subscription access or a later sale can reduce exposure when the concept is uncertain. Do not confuse a discount with evidence of quality.
  7. Consider the support plan. Ongoing updates can help a new community grow, while a franchise may have a longer content roadmap. Treat promised features as plans until they ship.

How to evaluate a franchise without being trapped by nostalgia

  • Define the non-negotiable core: Is it the combat rhythm, competitive rules, characters, world, humor or social play?
  • Look for purposeful change: A new mode or setting matters when it creates different decisions, not merely more collectibles.
  • Check independence: Determine whether the story and mechanics make sense without previous games.
  • Watch for fatigue signals: Frequent releases, recycled missions or cosmetic changes without systemic improvement can indicate that continuity is doing more work than design.
  • Read the ownership carefully: A studio that created an entry may not control the franchise or future sequels; rights depend on agreements among the relevant companies.

How to evaluate a new IP without demanding instant perfection

  • Test the central loop: Trailers can sell a setting, but repeated play depends on the actions and decisions the game offers.
  • Look for a coherent scope: A focused original game may deliver a stronger experience than a first attempt at an enormous universe.
  • Check the communication: Developers should be able to explain systems, progression and intended audience without relying only on lore.
  • Verify practical readiness: Examine launch performance, accessibility, save systems, multiplayer reliability and update commitments.
  • Allow room for identity: Familiar genre conventions can help players enter a new world; originality does not require rejecting every established design pattern.

Why there is no reliable winner

The available evidence does not isolate IP status from the factors that usually determine a game’s outcome. Budget affects production quality, marketing affects discovery, platform placement affects reach, timing affects competition, and genre affects the size and expectations of the audience. A controlled comparison of player satisfaction, retention or sales between original-IP games and franchise entries—holding those variables constant—is not established by the cited sources.

That limitation matters because a popular franchise can benefit from recognition while suffering from fatigue, and a new IP can face discovery costs while offering a more focused or original experience. The label changes the starting conditions; it does not write the ending.

Bottom line for players

Choose a new game IP when its premise, systems and execution give you a reason to explore an unknown world, and accept that discovery and launch quality may be less certain. Choose an established franchise when its recognizable core is valuable to you and the new entry demonstrates a meaningful purpose beyond repeating the brand. In both cases, judge the individual game’s promise, evidence and conditions of release. Recognition is a head start; originality is an opportunity. Neither is a guarantee.
