Notebookcheck’s September 8, 2026 roundup highlighted a selected batch of free-to-play games newly spotted on Steam, including horror, racing, platforming, and strategy picks. The list is a dated snapshot, not a complete catalog or a claim about the newest games available as of October 4. Steam review scores can change quickly, and small samples make early percentages especially easy to overread.
Which new free Steam games were highlighted?
The games below appeared in Notebookcheck’s September 8 roundup. The roundup’s percentages are snapshots from its publication time; where a later Steam listing check is available, that more recent figure is shown separately. Steam user reviews are not controlled tests or a representative poll.

| Game | What it is | Rating context | Notable caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bomb Farm | Idle RPG with tradeable items and a player-driven economy. | Notebookcheck reported 76% positive from more than 500 reviews on September 8. A later Steam check showed 65% positive from 792 all-time reviews and 51% from 310 recent reviews. | Its later, lower snapshot illustrates why both the check date and recent sentiment matter. Steam listing. |
| Poncik’s Little Tragedy | First-person mascot horror set in an abandoned theater, with exploration and puzzles. | Notebookcheck reported 89% positive; a later Steam check showed 92% from 26 all-time reviews. | The later score comes from a small sample. Released August 26. Steam listing. |
| Car D Game | Racing built around roguelike deckbuilding, car modification, and turn-based tactical races. | Notebookcheck reported 85% positive; a later Steam check showed 81% from 22 all-time reviews and 80% from 20 recent reviews. | It is in Early Access; the developer describes it as playable while balance and variety continue to develop, and planned content may change. Steam listing. |
| Lost Light | Casual platformer with full controller support. | Notebookcheck reported 100% positive from 21 reviews. | A perfect early percentage across 21 reviews is a limited signal, not broad consensus. |
| Solipsistic | Psychological horror that incorporates manipulating game files into its puzzles. | A later Steam check showed 100% positive from 23 all-time reviews. | The rating is based on a modest number of reviews. Released August 28. Steam listing. |
| Crawler | VR mech horde shooter with online co-op. | Notebookcheck reported 91% positive from more than 20 reviews. | It is designed for VR. The roundup does not specify a compatible headset model, so check the Steam page’s current system and headset requirements before buying hardware. |
| Fall Queen | Precision 2D platformer with controller support. | Notebookcheck reported 86% positive in its snapshot. | The roundup did not state a review count alongside that percentage. |
| Battle Ranker in Another World | Auto-battler with RPG mechanics and a story. | Notebookcheck reported 70% positive from 24 reviews. | This was a more mixed snapshot than the other examples in the roundup. |
How to choose among these free games
- For horror: Poncik’s Little Tragedy offers first-person exploration and puzzles; Solipsistic uses game-file manipulation as part of its puzzle design.
- For racing and tinkering: Car D Game combines tactical racing and car modification, but its Early Access status means development and planned content can change.
- For platforming: Lost Light and Fall Queen are the controller-support picks identified in the roundup. Lost Light’s reported score came from 21 reviews.
- For VR and co-op: Crawler is the hardware-specific option, combining a VR design with online co-op. Confirm compatibility before purchasing a headset.
- For strategy or idle progression: Battle Ranker in Another World is an auto-battler, while Bomb Farm centers on idle RPG progression and a player-driven economy.
What the ratings do—and do not—tell you
A percentage is only one part of the picture. The count underneath it matters: 100% positive from 21 or 23 reviews is an encouraging early response, but it is not equivalent evidence to a similar score drawn from thousands. Reviews also change as more players weigh in. Bomb Farm’s 76% in Notebookcheck’s September 8 roundup had become 65% across 792 all-time Steam reviews in a later check, with its recent-review snapshot lower still.

Why this is a dated selection, not a complete catalog
The September 8 group should not be merged with earlier August releases as if they arrived together. Notebookcheck’s August 30 roundup featured another batch, including Nudge, BattleTabs, Tung, Blue Sign, Sands of Skullcreek, and other titles. Those were a separate dated selection; the existence of these two roundups does not establish that either is exhaustive or that it is the latest available list on October 4.
