New FPGBA SP Retro Handheld Promises Original Game Boy Advance Cartridge Support at a $100 Target

A demonstrated prototype called the FPGBA SP is being developed to run original Nintendo Game Boy Advance cartridges in a clamshell handheld. Developer Taki Udon is targeting a price of about $100, but the device is not yet a confirmed retail product: final specifications, availability and a release date had not been announced as of October 14, 2026.

The transparent-blue prototype was shown running a Pokémon game on October 12. It uses FPGA hardware rather than the conventional software-emulation approach used by many inexpensive retro handhelds, and the project is also designed to load additional games from an SD card.

What the FPGBA SP is—and what it is not

FPGBA SP is a clamshell-style retro handheld prototype from Taki Udon. Its defining feature is support for physical Game Boy Advance cartridges, so owners would be able to insert original game cards instead of relying only on ROM files or preloaded software. The demonstration establishes that a prototype can run a Pokémon GBA title, but it does not establish that every cartridge, accessory or game feature will work in a finished unit.

This remains a development project. There is no announced retail launch, final specification sheet or release date. The roughly $100 figure is a development target rather than a price consumers can pay today.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Does it play original GBA cartridges?

According to Taki Udon, yes. His statement, reproduced in 2026 coverage, says: “We’ve been making a lot of progress on FPGBA SP. Yes, it plays real cartridges, and yes, I am considering a regular FPGBA version. I’m still trying to make this work for around $100.”

The wording confirms the project’s intended cartridge function, not a completed compatibility guarantee. Until production hardware and independent testing are available, buyers should treat support for unusual cartridges, save-hardware variants, link functions and other edge cases as unconfirmed.

How the FPGA approach differs from emulation

Most low-cost retro handhelds run software emulators on a general-purpose processor. An FPGA (field-programmable gate array) can instead be configured to reproduce console hardware logic in circuitry. For FPGBA SP, that approach is central to handling an actual cartridge: the cartridge is read by hardware designed for the GBA platform rather than being converted into a software-only game library.

FPGA does not automatically mean perfect compatibility. The prototype is still being refined, and no published test list covers all GBA games or peripherals. The available demonstration should therefore be read as proof of progress, not as a claim that the finished product will reproduce every behavior of original Nintendo hardware.

SD-card games and expansion plans

Reporting on the prototype says it can also run additional games stored on an SD card. That gives the concept two modes: physical cartridges for owners of original media and digital storage for other supported software. The project’s exact file formats, legal requirements, menu software, storage limits and whether SD-card features will be included in a shipping model have not been specified.

Taki Udon has also said he is considering a regular, non-clamshell FPGBA version. That is a possible second model, not an announced product with confirmed specifications.

Price, availability and timing

Item What is established What remains unknown
FPGBA SP price Approximately $100 is the developer’s target. No retail price, preorder or shipping offer has been announced.
Availability A working transparent-blue prototype was demonstrated in October 2026. There is no confirmed release date or public production schedule.
Hardware FPGA-based design with demonstrated GBA cartridge playback. Screen, battery, dimensions, weight, ports and final performance are not stated.
Digital expansion Additional games are reported to be stored on an SD card. Capacity, supported formats and final software features are not stated.

The target price is especially notable because FPGA handhelds with cartridge support have generally occupied a higher price tier. It should not be treated as an inflation-adjusted or guaranteed launch price; component costs, manufacturing quantities and final design decisions could change it.

How it compares with established alternatives

The clearest benchmark is the Analogue Pocket. 2026 reporting lists it at $239.99 and says it supports more than 2,780 Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges out of the box. If FPGBA SP reaches production near $100, it would represent a substantial cost reduction for the narrower GBA-focused use case, although the Pocket’s published compatibility breadth is already established while FPGBA SP’s remains under development.

Device or category Cartridge support Core approach Price or status
FPGBA SP Original GBA cartridges demonstrated on a prototype FPGA About $100 target; no release date
Analogue Pocket More than 2,780 Game Boy-family cartridges reported compatible out of the box FPGA $239.99 reported in 2026 coverage
Konkr Pocket Advance Emulation-based; physical cartridge support not established Software emulation Availability and price depend on the seller
Anbernic RG SP Emulation-based; physical cartridge support not established Software emulation Availability and price depend on the seller

Konkr Pocket Advance and Anbernic RG SP are examples of GBA-style alternatives identified in coverage, but emulation-focused devices generally do not accept original cartridges. They may still appeal to buyers who prioritize a mature product, broader emulator support or immediate availability over using their existing game collection.

What prospective buyers should verify before paying

  • Wait for a confirmed retail listing and a stated release date; the prototype is not currently an announced product for sale.
  • Look for a published compatibility list covering your cartridges, save type and any accessories you use.
  • Check whether SD-card loading is included in the shipping model and which files it accepts.
  • Confirm the final screen, battery, controls, charging connector and warranty rather than relying on prototype footage.
  • Distinguish a developer price target from a locked launch price, especially if a preorder page appears before final specifications.

Bottom line for GBA cartridge owners

FPGBA SP is promising because it combines a portable clamshell design, FPGA hardware and demonstrated support for a real GBA cartridge at a proposed mainstream price. The important qualifiers are just as clear: it is still a prototype, the approximately $100 figure is only a target, and no release date or final specifications exist. Until those details are published and tested on production hardware, the project is best viewed as an encouraging announcement rather than a device you can buy or a guaranteed replacement for established FPGA hardware.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
