Yes—astronomers have identified strong, independent evidence for two actively accreting supermassive black holes in the lensed system MG B2016+112. Their inferred projected separation is only 175 parsecs (about 570 light-years) at redshift 3.273, when the universe was much younger. Optical emission-line ratios and separate X-ray spectra point to two ionizing engines rather than one unusually complicated source, although the exact masses, feeding rates and host-galaxy geometry remain model-dependent.
What was found in MG B2016+112?
MG B2016+112 is a radio-loud active-galaxy system whose light is gravitationally lensed by a foreground object. The lens splits the background source into three resolved images, labeled A, B and C. Because each image follows a different path around the lens, astronomers can inspect the same distant system in several highly magnified views.

The source lies at redshift z = 3.273. The measured 175-parsec spacing is a projected separation—the distance across the sky after accounting for the lens model—not a complete three-dimensional distance. The true separation could therefore be larger.

How the optical data distinguish one source from two
Archival observations with the Very Large Telescope’s MUSE instrument detect ultraviolet emission from hydrogen and highly ionized elements, including Lyα, C IV, N V, He II and C III]. Several of the strongest lines—Lyα, C IV and N V—are affected by saturated absorption, so the authors rely particularly on the relative behavior of He II and C III].
Matching A and B
The He II/C III] ratios in images A and B are consistent with each other. That is what is expected if those two images are lensed views of the same ionizing source.

A different spectrum in C
Image C has a significantly different He II/C III] ratio. The MUSE authors interpret that mismatch as evidence that C is illuminated by a second ionizing source. In other words, lensing explains why A and B resemble each other, while the distinct line ratios require another source in the system rather than merely another image of the first.
This is spectroscopic evidence for a dual active galactic nucleus (dual AGN): two accreting black holes whose radiation ionizes surrounding gas. It is not a direct photograph of two event horizons.

What the independent Chandra observation adds
A separate analysis used a new 175-kilosecond Chandra exposure and fitted the X-ray sources separately. It found intrinsic absorbing gas with a column density NH > 4 × 1022 cm−2 at the source redshift, detected at 3-sigma confidence, for the highly magnified source located inside the lens caustic. That absorption identifies it as an obscured AGN.
The system also contains a previously known type-II AGN outside the caustic. Taken together, the separate X-ray spectrum and the known type-II source support a compact dual AGN and address an earlier alternative: that one complex, strongly magnified radio jet might imitate two sources. Optical line ratios and X-ray absorption are different diagnostics, so their agreement is stronger than either observation alone.

Measured separation, mass limits and feeding estimates
| Component | Black-hole mass lower limit | Eddington-ratio limit | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | ≥2.0 × 107 solar masses | ≤0.47 | Model-dependent lower/upper limits after correcting for lens magnification |
| B | ≥2.3 × 107 solar masses | ≤0.51 | Model-dependent lower/upper limits after correcting for lens magnification |
| C | ≥1.5 × 107 solar masses | ≤0.04 | Especially sensitive to the adopted magnification |
The masses come from broad C IV-line fits and are lower limits, not precise weighing of the black holes. The Eddington ratio compares inferred luminosity with the theoretical maximum steady radiation pressure for a black hole of a given mass. Values near one-half for A and B suggest substantially stronger inferred accretion than the roughly four-percent limit for C, but these are not permanently measured feeding rates. Lens magnification, line modeling and assumptions about intrinsic luminosity all affect the estimates; the C value is particularly sensitive to the magnification model.

Why a 175-parsec pair matters
Galaxy mergers can drive gas toward galactic centers, potentially switching on accretion around two supermassive black holes. A pair separated by 175 parsecs is still far wider than the final sub-parsec stage at which gravitational-wave emission dominates, but it provides a rare laboratory for observing merger-driven fueling before that late evolution.

The similar mass lower limits are compatible with a major merger, in which the two galaxies have broadly comparable central black-hole masses. They do not prove that the host is a major merger: the host-galaxy structure and the lens model still need to be tested. The contrast between the estimated feeding levels is also scientifically important. It may indicate that the two nuclei experience very different gas supplies or obscuration, but the current data cannot separate those possibilities decisively.
How secure is the “tightest” claim?
Both preprints describe the system as the most compact confirmed dual AGN or confirmed AGN pair at high redshift, with the qualification z > 1. The claim refers to the 175-parsec projected separation and to confirmation using multiple lines of evidence. It should not be read as a measurement of the true three-dimensional spacing or as a complete census of every known AGN pair.
What astronomers need to learn next
The authors call for deep, spatially resolved near-infrared spectroscopy. Such data could reduce uncertainty in the broad-line mass estimates, test the ionized gas around each nucleus and reveal the host-galaxy conditions that the current lensed views cannot fully resolve.
Future wide surveys—including Euclid, the Square Kilometre Array, Rubin and Roman—could locate more compact systems. A larger sample would show how often close dual AGN occur, how frequently both black holes are fed at the same time and whether systems like MG B2016+112 are plausible precursors to later supermassive-black-hole mergers and gravitational-wave sources.
Quick Recap
What the evidence establishes—and what it does not
- Established by the two analyses: a lensed source at z = 3.273 with a 175-parsec projected separation; distinct optical ionization ratios for image C; and an independently detected, obscured X-ray AGN alongside a known type-II AGN.
- Supported but model-dependent: black-hole mass lower limits, the relative Eddington-ratio limits and the interpretation of comparable masses as consistent with a major merger.
- Not yet settled: the exact intrinsic separation, host-galaxy morphology, each black hole’s precise mass and accretion rate, and whether the observed feeding contrast is physical or partly produced by lens-model uncertainties.
