Epic has not announced the game’s official name, platforms, final design or revised release date. The project is described in reporting as a shooter that combines Disney-owned Marvel and Star Wars properties. No finished build has been shown publicly, so its format, business model, player count and relationship to other Epic games remain unconfirmed.

That uncertainty matters because the project is larger than a routine licensed release. Is the Marvel and Star Wars game delayed?
Yes, according to reporting by Tom’s Hardware, which cited Bloomberg: the project was previously expected to arrive in March 2027 and has been delayed to an unspecified date. Neither Epic nor Disney has publicly supplied a new launch window in the information available here.
A delay does not establish why the schedule changed. The timing coincides with Epic’s reported production overhaul, but no public statement proves that the AI initiative caused the postponement. Until Epic announces a date and platforms, any release calendar beyond the abandoned March 2027 target is speculation.

Why is Epic using AI to make the Disney game?
Epic founder Tim Sweeney said the company has “a huge pivot underway,” moving developers to “retool for maximum AI acceleration.” He said the aim is not to produce the same work with fewer people, but to let teams build “MORE and BETTER stuff” and extend the benefits to projects using Unreal.

Human direction, design, editing, testing, performance work and approvals could still be essential, especially for characters and worlds with strict brand requirements.

AI-first development versus conventional production
The central gamble is not whether an AI tool can make an isolated texture or code suggestion. It is whether an AI-heavy pipeline can deliver a coherent, safe and supportable blockbuster on schedule.

A major standalone Marvel and Star Wars game would therefore be judged not only as a shooter, but also as evidence that this broader strategy can turn famous stories into durable social experiences. If it underperforms, confidence in that larger plan could weaken; if it succeeds, Epic becomes a more credible platform for Disney’s future interactive projects.

Brand standards are unusually demanding
Marvel and Star Wars are not interchangeable visual themes. Characters, dialogue, lore, ratings, safety policies and continuity all require close control. Disney’s strategy statement emphasizes original, medium-specific games and lasting social experiences. Generated assets and code must meet those expectations while supporting a world that can be updated without breaking its identity.
The promise has not been demonstrated
Sweeney’s claim that AI can help teams build “MORE and BETTER stuff” is a goal, not a result measured on this project. There is no public game to evaluate frame rate, combat feel, accessibility, moderation, monetization, story quality or technical stability. The reported delay is the only clear schedule signal, and its cause is not established.

There is no confirmation that the unnamed shooter is a Fortnite mode, a Fortnite client feature or a separate product that shares accounts, progression or technology. Disney’s August 16 D23 announcement did highlight a Fortnite “Smugglers Gambit” activation, but that event should not be treated as evidence that the new shooter is inside Fortnite. Epic’s wider relationship with Disney can include several connected experiences without making every project the same game.
How it fits Disney’s wider games slate
The Epic project is only one part of Disney’s current plans. At D23 on August 16, Disney highlighted Kingdom Hearts IV, the Fortnite Smugglers Gambit activation and Marvel’s Wolverine. Disney described Kingdom Hearts IV as launching in late 2027 and noted that the franchise has sold more than 39 million units worldwide. Those announcements concern separate products and do not provide a release date for the Epic shooter.
Frontier Developments also announced on September 3, 2026 a fully funded Disney game designed around the studio’s creative-management-simulation expertise. Frontier disclosed neither a title nor a release date. Its announcement is independent of the unnamed Epic shooter, showing that Disney is pursuing multiple game formats rather than relying on one project.
