A simple new-car care routine starts with your vehicle’s owner’s manual, then matches each cleaning method to the material it touches. Remove loose grit before wiping, use gentle products made for the surface, and treat wax, coatings, and paint correction as conditional—not automatic—steps.
Check the manual and existing treatments first
Before choosing a cleaner or washing method, check the owner’s manual for your specific model and market. Confirm whether the paint is gloss or matte, and whether the car has paint protection film, a coating, or window tint. If a treatment was installed, follow its maker’s aftercare instructions as well as the vehicle guidance.

This matters because one routine does not suit every finish or cabin material. Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. guidance warns that matte paint needs different care from ordinary gloss paint. A generic recommendation to wax or polish may be inappropriate for matte paint or a treated surface.

Remove grit before wiping
- Take out floor mats and shake or clean them separately.
- Vacuum crumbs, dust, and grit from the cabin before wiping surfaces. Moving loose dirt with a cloth can scratch or grind it into a material.
- For suitable surfaces, wipe with a soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water.
Match the cleaner to the material
If water alone is not enough, choose a mild cleaner intended for that particular material and test it first in a concealed spot. For fabric upholstery, vacuum regularly and use a suitable upholstery cleaner for stains. For leather, use a compatible gentle method, clean spills promptly, and avoid soaking the seat.

Do not assume that every surface described as leather or leatherette has the same care requirements. Check the manual for seat and trim materials before applying a product.
Keep liquids away from electronics
Use a lightly dampened cloth rather than spraying cleaner onto the dashboard or display. Never spray a display directly, and keep excess liquid away from switches, ports, and other electronics. Hyundai and Kia manuals give material-specific cabin precautions, which can vary by vehicle and market.

Wash the exterior without dragging dirt across the paint
Use a gentle, top-down wash
- Park out of direct sunlight and rinse off loose dirt.
- Use vehicle-specific shampoo with a clean automotive microfiber wash mitt or soft sponge.
- Wash from the top down. Volkswagen recommends keeping wash water and rinse water in separate buckets so the wash tool can be rinsed between passes.
- Rinse the car thoroughly. If drying it, use a clean, soft towel rather than rubbing with a dirty or rough cloth.
Do not dry-wipe dusty paint, let strong detergent dry on the surface, or make household dish soap your default car shampoo. The aim is to lift and rinse away dirt, not scrub it across the finish.

Remove damaging contamination carefully
Insects, tar, tree sap, bird droppings, and industrial pollution can damage paint if left in place. Address contamination promptly with a paint-safe method. Avoid scraping it off or rubbing aggressively; if it will not lift safely, ask a professional to handle it.

Choose paint protection according to the finish
Wax is an option for some gloss finishes, not a required step after every wash. Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. manual describes wax as protection from contaminants and advises applying it after washing and drying when water no longer beads. Volkswagen notes that a gentle shampoo can reduce the need to wax after every wash.
Matte paint may prohibit wax or polish, and a coating or paint protection film may have its own aftercare rules. Follow the vehicle and treatment makers’ instructions rather than applying a product simply because it is common in generic detailing advice.

Keep routine care separate from paint correction
Washing removes dirt; paint correction attempts to change the finish. Volkswagen cautions that a machine polisher used incorrectly could scratch or chip paint or cause discoloration, and recommends consulting a dealer before attempting correction. If the paint has scratches, dull patches, or other defects that washing cannot address, get advice from a qualified professional before using a machine or abrasive product.
