Choose New Balance running shoes if you will run regularly, walk briskly for long distances, or combine running and walking. Choose New Balance walking shoes if your main activities are slower walking, standing at work, travel and everyday use. Running shoes are built to manage greater impact and propel you forward; walking shoes emphasize stability, durability and a smooth heel-to-toe transition.
The category is only the starting point. Cushioning, support, traction, width, fit and the surfaces you use should determine the final model. A well-fitting running shoe can be excellent for walking, while a walking shoe is usually a poor choice for sustained running.

What is the difference between New Balance running and walking shoes?
New Balance says it designs running, walking and training shoes for the distinct demands of each activity. That distinction is practical rather than cosmetic: running places substantially higher impact and requires a shoe that helps the foot move forward efficiently on every stride.
General footwear guidance from Nike’s running-versus-walking explanation describes running shoes as designed for higher impact and forward propulsion. It describes walking shoes as prioritizing stability, durability and smooth heel-to-toe transitions. Those principles apply when you compare New Balance’s separate running and walking categories.

| Factor | New Balance running shoes | New Balance walking shoes |
|---|---|---|
| Primary movement | Repeated impact with forward propulsion | Slower heel-to-toe walking and prolonged standing |
| Ride and geometry | Often shaped to make forward movement feel efficient; models range from soft daily trainers to lighter speed shoes | Usually tuned for a stable, predictable transition and everyday comfort |
| Support choices | Neutral or stability versions, depending on foot motion and preference | Supportive stability is a central selection criterion |
| Cushioning | Ranges from responsive, lighter cushioning to softer cushioning for long efforts | Adequate cushioning for walking and standing, balanced with stability |
| Outsole and terrain | Road compounds for pavement, or grippier designs for trails and uneven ground | Traction suited to sidewalks, indoor floors and everyday surfaces |
| Best use | Running, run-walk workouts and substantial brisk walking | Walking, standing, commuting, travel and general daily wear |
The distinctions are tendencies, not absolute rules. A highly cushioned running shoe may feel ideal on a long day of walking, and some walking shoes can handle a very short jog. The issue is whether the shoe’s construction matches the impact, speed and duration you expect most often.
Can you use New Balance running shoes for walking?
Yes. Running shoes are generally suitable for walking, and they are often the more versatile choice when your routine includes both activities. Their cushioning and construction are designed for higher impact, so ordinary walking is usually within their intended workload.
When a running shoe is the better walking shoe
- You walk several miles at a time or at a fast pace.
- You follow a run-walk plan or expect to add running soon.
- You prefer a softer, more cushioned feel underfoot.
- You spend time on roads, paths or mixed surfaces where a running outsole offers useful traction.
- You want one pair for workouts and everyday walking rather than separate pairs.
Trade-offs for everyday walking
A running model can cost more, wear its foam and outsole differently, or feel less stable than a purpose-built walking shoe when you stand in one place for hours. Some runners also prefer a lighter, more flexible shoe that may not feel as planted during prolonged standing. Try the shoe at the pace and duration you actually expect; a comfortable running shoe that keeps your heel secure is usually preferable to a nominally “walking” shoe that pinches or slips.

Usually not for regular running. Walking shoes prioritize stability, durability and a smooth transition at walking speeds, while running shoes are engineered for repeated higher-impact landings and forward propulsion. A walking shoe may be acceptable for an occasional, very short jog if it feels secure and pain-free, but it is not the sensible default for a training schedule.
Why the mismatch matters
- Impact management: Running multiplies the loading each step places on the shoe and your body.
- Propulsion: Running geometry and foam are intended to help you move forward quickly; a walking shoe may feel cumbersome or restrictive.
- Heat and fatigue: A walking shoe built for standing can be heavier or less ventilated during a run.
- Terrain: A road-running or trail-running outsole is selected for the relevant surface, whereas a walking outsole may not provide the same grip during faster movement.
If running will be more than an occasional experiment, start with a New Balance running model and select neutral or stability support based on your foot motion and comfort.

- LIGHTWEIGHT EVA FOAM - EVA foam midsole with an internal shank adds lightweight cushioning and midfoot stability for versatile daily comfort
1. Select neutral or stability support
Neutral shoes allow a more natural foot motion and are appropriate when you do not need added guidance. Stability shoes add structural support that can help runners who overpronate (the foot rolls inward excessively) or who simply prefer a more guided, structured ride.
Do not choose stability solely because it sounds safer. If a neutral shoe is comfortable, your heel is secure and your stride feels natural, extra structure may be unnecessary. Conversely, repeated discomfort or a known overpronation issue is a reason to try a stability model, ideally with a professional fitting.
2. Match cushioning to the session
- More cushioned and softer: useful for easy mileage, long efforts and runners who prioritize comfort.
- Firmer or lighter: often feels more responsive for intervals, faster workouts and racing.
- Balanced daily-trainer cushioning: a practical one-pair option for regular training and walking.
“Soft” is not automatically better. A foam that feels pleasant while standing may feel unstable when cornering or tiring late in a run. Try several steps at your normal pace and, if possible, include a faster effort.
3. Choose the intended use and terrain
For pavement and sidewalks, select a road-running shoe. For loose dirt, rocks or uneven ground, choose a trail-oriented model with a grippier outsole and a more protective upper. A speed or race model can complement, rather than replace, a durable daily trainer if your training includes both easy and fast sessions.
4. Check fit and width before judging the ride
New Balance offers multiple widths, and width can matter as much as length. Look for a heel that stays anchored without pressure, enough room for your toes to spread and no hot spot over the instep or forefoot. Your toes should not strike the front when descending or when your feet swell during a long run.

5. Consider the New Balance 1080 family carefully
The Fresh Foam X 1080 appears in New Balance’s running range and is a defensible example of a cushioned daily trainer. If you search for “New Balance 1080 running shoes,” verify the exact generation, listed width, seller, price and return policy before buying. A model name alone does not establish that two listings are the same version.
How to choose a New Balance walking shoe
New Balance’s walking category identifies comfortable fit, adequate cushioning and supportive stability as the core requirements. Start with the activity that occupies most of your day, then test the shoe against that scenario.
Slow city walking and errands
Prioritize a secure heel, sufficient toe room and outsole traction for pavement and indoor floors. Moderate cushioning is usually enough; excessive softness can make a shoe feel less stable during frequent stops and turns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLong walks and travel
Choose cushioning that remains comfortable after several hours, a breathable upper and a width that accommodates normal foot swelling. A running shoe may be the better category if your walking is fast, hilly or mixed with jogging.
Standing at work
Look for a stable platform, cushioning that does not bottom out during a shift and traction appropriate to the floor. A walking model is often a natural fit, but a stable running shoe can work when you also walk substantial distances. Break in the shoe before relying on it for a full shift.
Occasional short jogs
If jogging is genuinely occasional and brief, a comfortable walking shoe may tolerate it, but frequent or increasing running calls for a running model. Do not use occasional success as proof that the shoe is suitable for a training plan.

Which New Balance shoes are best for standing all day?
The best choice is the model that combines a comfortable, non-slipping fit with adequate cushioning, supportive stability and traction for your workplace. There is no single universally best model because floors, hours, body shape and foot width vary.
Standing-all-day checklist
- Heel remains secure without needing to overtighten laces.
- Toes can spread and do not press against the upper.
- Cushioning feels supportive after several hours, not merely soft for the first few minutes.
- The outsole grips your actual floor; do not rely on a road outsole where oily or soapy contamination is possible.
- The shoe’s width matches your foot, including any swelling late in the day.
- You can walk normally between workstations without the platform feeling unstable.
New Balance reports slip-resistance testing for applicable shoes under ASTM F2913-11. Its current product-and-fit FAQ lists thresholds of at least 0.7 in dry and wet conditions and 0.5 in oily/wet and soapy conditions. Those values apply to applicable tested shoes, not automatically to every New Balance model, so check the individual product information for your workplace.
Do you need stability or neutral New Balance shoes?
Choose neutral support when your foot moves comfortably without added guidance and you prefer an unobstructed, natural ride. Try stability support when you overpronate, have been advised to use it by a qualified professional, or feel more controlled in a structured shoe.
Signs to compare stability models
- Your foot visibly rolls inward substantially during walking or running.
- You repeatedly lose alignment or feel unstable late in a run.
- A neutral shoe feels difficult to control even when the size and width are correct.
- A clinician or experienced fitter has identified a support need.
These signs do not diagnose an injury or guarantee that stability footwear will solve pain. Persistent pain warrants professional medical advice rather than a stronger shoe category.
How New Balance model numbers work
Model numbers provide clues but are not a complete specification. New Balance’s model-number FAQ says MW denotes men’s walking. The same explanation describes number families associated with control, stability, cushioning and speed, but style numbers, versions, widths and regional catalogues change.
Best Value
- ABZORB midsole technology absorbs impact through a blend of cushioning and compression resistance in these mens cross training shoes for comfortable, all-day wear.
- A suede upper gives these new balance 608 men a classic look with a snug, supportive fit that feels broken in from day one.
- Lightweight injection-molded EVA foam in the midsole keeps these casual comfort shoes men cushioned without adding unnecessary weight.
- An internal midsole shank provides midfoot structure and support in these everyday trainers men for stable footing on any surface.
- Dual density collar foam and Phantom Liner interior with minimal seaming reduce irritation and add ankle comfort in these walking shoes men comfortable enough for hours on your feet.
Use the number as a starting point, then open the current product page and confirm:
- Whether the shoe is categorized for running, walking, training or trail use.
- The exact generation or version.
- Available widths and the listed size conversion for your region.
- Support type, cushioning description and outsole or terrain information.
- Return terms and seller details.
Read New Balance’s model-number FAQ for the current explanation, but treat it as a guide rather than a promise that every number has the same meaning in every market.
Fit, sizing and break-in: a practical process
- Measure or review your size: use New Balance’s sizing guidance rather than relying only on a size you wear in another brand.
- Choose the width: compare standard, wide or other available widths so your toes are not compressed.
- Try the shoes later in the day: feet commonly expand after hours of activity, which helps reveal a too-snug fit.
- Wear your intended socks: thin dress socks and thick running socks can produce very different results.
- Check movement: walk, climb stairs and, for a running model, jog or run briefly. Your heel should stay put while your toes remain free.
- Increase use gradually: use a new pair for short outings before committing to a long walk, race or full work shift.
For a difficult fit, New Balance recommends its product-sizing resources, customer care or a professional fitting. A correct width can solve problems that changing cushioning or support cannot.

Choose the outsole for the surface, not just the upper’s appearance. Road shoes are intended for pavement; trail shoes use more aggressive, grippy designs for uneven ground. Walking shoes should provide reliable traction for the floors and sidewalks you actually encounter.
There is no universal New Balance mileage figure that guarantees replacement. Wear depends on the model, surface, gait, body weight, rotation and how the shoes are used. Inspect the outsole for worn tread, the midsole for uneven compression and the upper for loss of structural support. Replace a pair when those changes affect comfort, stability or traction, even if the shoe has not reached a particular mileage number.
Running versus walking: a quick decision table
| Your main routine | Best starting category | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Running three or more days a week | Running shoe | Neutral or stability support, cushioning matched to mileage, correct width |
| Run-walk training | Running shoe | Comfort over impact, secure heel and versatile daily-trainer ride |
| Fast or long-distance walking | Running shoe or performance walking model | Cushioning, smooth forward transition and traction |
| Slow walking, errands and commuting | Walking shoe | Stable platform, comfortable fit and durable everyday outsole |
| Standing most of a work shift | Walking shoe or stable running shoe | All-day cushioning, stability, width and floor-specific grip |
| Trail walking or mixed dirt paths | Trail-running shoe | Outsole grip, foot security and protection from uneven ground |
| Occasional short jog only | Comfortable walking shoe may suffice; running shoe is safer for progression | Secure fit and absence of pain, with a plan to switch if running increases |
Bottom line: which should you buy?
Buy a New Balance running shoe when running, brisk long-distance walking or mixed run-walk training is a regular part of your life. Select neutral or stability support according to your foot motion, choose cushioning for the duration and pace, and match the outsole to road or trail terrain.
Buy a New Balance walking shoe when slower walking, standing, commuting and everyday comfort dominate. Judge it by fit, width, stability, cushioning and traction rather than by the model number alone. If your use is genuinely mixed and includes meaningful running, a well-fitting running shoe is usually the more versatile purchase.
