The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 is a neutral, soft-cushioned shoe intended for everyday running and quicker sessions. Its 6 mm drop and low published weight suit runners who want a light-feeling daily trainer, but “quick runs” does not make it a plated racing shoe. Fit guidance and a 40-mile review offer useful context; neither establishes universal fit or long-term durability.
What the Rebel v5 is designed for
New Balance describes the Rebel v5 as “ultra lightweight” and intended for everyday runs. Its product listing names everyday running and quick runs as its best uses, with soft cushioning and neutral support. The brand says the FuelCell midsole uses a PEBA/EVA blend and is designed to feel responsive and energetic. Those are manufacturer descriptions; they are not an independent material analysis or a guarantee that every runner will experience the ride the same way.

For a runner looking for one neutral shoe for routine miles and some faster efforts, that positioning is more relevant than the word “fast” in the product description. The available information does not establish a head-to-head advantage over another shoe or support treating the Rebel v5 as a dedicated plated racer.

| Specification | Published detail |
|---|---|
| Support | Neutral, according to New Balance’s product listing |
| Cushioning | Soft, according to New Balance’s product listing |
| Drop | 6 mm on both the product page and 2025 launch announcement |
| Men’s weight | 223 g (7.9 oz) on the New Balance product page; the 16 May 2025 launch announcement lists 225 g (7.9 oz) for men’s size 9.5D |
| Women’s weight | 180 g (6.3 oz) for women’s size 7B in the 16 May 2025 launch announcement |
| Midsole description | PEBA/EVA FuelCell blend, as described by New Balance |
The two official pages give slightly different gram figures for the men’s weight. The launch announcement specifies a men’s size 9.5D, while the product page lists a men’s weight without that same size context in the cited specification. Weight varies by shoe size, so these figures should not be read as the weight of every pair.

How the shoe feels: official description versus one review
New Balance says the shoe was built to “look and feel fast” and describes its foam as responsive and energetic. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on review, published 10 July 2025, provides a different kind of evidence: the reviewer reported a comfortable, versatile ride after running 40 miles in the shoe. They also said the PEBA/EVA midsole felt less springy than the full-PEBA FuelCell used in the SC Elite v5. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a controlled comparison or a finding that will apply to every runner.
Fit and sizing
New Balance says the Rebel v5 is designed for a snug fit and advises runners between sizes to consider sizing up. The cited listing also says it fits as expected for most people and offers standard and wide widths for that listed variant.

In Tom’s Guide’s individual review, the reviewer found their usual running-shoe size comfortable and described the toe box as fairly wide. That experience does not cancel out the brand’s snug-fit guidance: foot shape and preferred room can differ, and a single reviewer’s fit is not a sizing guarantee. If you are between sizes or need extra width, use the exact product listing’s available size and width options when deciding.

Tom’s Guide reported good grip during its testing, which included light trails. The reviewer had not tested the shoe in wet or icy conditions, so that review does not establish wet-weather or winter traction. A 40-mile report also cannot prove long-term durability or predict how many miles another runner will get from the shoe.

Consider the review a useful account of one runner’s fit and ride, not a substitute for your own fit check or evidence of performance across surfaces and conditions.

It is a plausible option if you want a neutral daily trainer that the manufacturer positions for everyday running and quicker outings, and you prefer soft cushioning in a lightweight-feeling shoe. Pay particular attention to the snug-fit note if you are between sizes. If your decision depends on wet-weather grip, long-term mileage life, or a direct comparison with a plated racer, the cited specifications and review do not settle those questions.
