What is known about the $814 quote?
The available wording says an 18-year-old in Nevada is “being quoted $814 for auto insurance,” but the original post or quote document was not located. It is therefore not possible to establish whether $814 is a monthly or annual amount, which insurer offered it, or whether it is an estimate or a bound policy.

Key details are also missing: the vehicle and garaging address, the young driver’s record, other household drivers, coverage limits, deductibles, optional coverages, payment plan, and any discounts or surcharges. Those details can materially affect a quote, so the amount alone is not enough to judge its accuracy or value.

No. A premium that feels unusually high is a reason to examine the quote and shop around, not proof of fraud or illegality. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 686A addresses specified unfair insurance practices and consumer-credit information rules; it does not establish a premium threshold above which a quote is automatically illegal. No regulator finding or complaint connected to this particular quote has been established. The phrase “This Is a Flat-Out Scam” should be treated as the title’s characterization, not a verified conclusion about an insurer.
How to check the quote before deciding
- Get the quote details in writing. Ask whether the amount is monthly, annual, or for another billing period, and whether it is an estimate for new business or a policy already bound.
- Check who and what the quote covers. Confirm the listed drivers, vehicle, garaging address, policy term, liability limits, comprehensive and collision coverage, deductibles, optional coverages, payment plan, and any discounts or surcharges.
- Request comparable quotes. Ask licensed insurers or a comparison service to price the same drivers, vehicle, address, term, limits, deductibles, options, and payment plan. A lower price may reflect less coverage or a higher deductible rather than a better deal.
- Keep the paperwork. Save the written quote, application or declarations information, and any explanations the insurer provides. These records make differences between offers easier to identify.

The guide’s search result includes an $814 figure in a Progressive Northern row, but the available excerpt does not preserve enough profile and column labels to connect that figure to an 18-year-old or to the reported quote. It should not be treated as confirmation that this driver was quoted that amount or that the quote is typical.

Nevada Administrative Code 679B.715 addresses an “adverse underwriting decision.” In that setting, the responsible institution or agent must provide the specific reason or reasons in writing, or explain how to request them in writing. A written request made within 90 business days requires a response with reasons and specified supporting information within 21 business days, subject to exceptions. These rules do not mean that every quote a consumer dislikes automatically qualifies as an adverse underwriting decision. Nevada Administrative Code 679B.715

If the insurer has made an adverse underwriting decision, ask for the applicable reasons in writing and keep the request and response. The regulation is a process for that situation, not evidence that the reported quote itself violated the law.
