Scientists can look inside a working proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by sending a beam through the assembled cell and measuring what reaches a detector. Neutron radiography is especially useful because neutrons can pass through metals and other structural materials while interacting strongly with hydrogen-rich water. The resulting images and measurements show where water accumulates, how it moves, and whether operating conditions are helping or hindering the cell. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) provides a complementary way to map liquid-water distribution in operating components.
This is specialized facility-based imaging, not a transparent window and not a routine diagnostic that a vehicle owner can perform. The cell must be designed for an imaging beamline, instrumented for controlled operation, and interpreted with attention to resolution, timing, radiation interactions and measurement uncertainty.

Why water is the thing scientists need to see
A PEMFC combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water and heat as products. Its membrane must stay sufficiently hydrated to conduct protons, yet excess liquid can block pores and gas channels that need to deliver reactants to the catalyst layers. Too little water can increase resistance and dry the membrane; too much can flood diffusion media or flow fields and limit gas transport.
That balance links water behavior to nearly every practical design choice: membrane and electrode materials, gas-diffusion media, channel geometry, compression, humidification, temperature, pressure and reactant flow. A cell can therefore show acceptable average voltage while still developing local wet or dry regions that shorten life or limit power. Imaging adds spatial information that a single voltage, current or outlet-water measurement cannot provide.

What “peeking inside” means in an operating PEMFC
The cell is assembled much as it would be for a normal test, but its housing and materials are selected so the imaging beam can reach the active area. Hydrogen and air (or oxygen) are supplied, electrical load is controlled, and temperature and humidity are monitored while the beam passes through the cell. A detector records transmission at many positions or angles, producing either a projection image or a reconstructed three-dimensional volume.
The measurement is indirect. The detector does not photograph individual water molecules or show a clear visual interior. Instead, software converts changes in beam transmission into maps or profiles of attenuation. Those maps are compared with dry-cell references, calibration data and operating conditions to estimate water content or liquid distribution.
How neutron radiography reveals water
Neutrons interact differently from X-rays
X-rays are attenuated mainly according to electron density. Neutrons interact with atomic nuclei, so a material that is relatively transparent to X-rays can have a very different neutron response. Hydrogen is particularly important: water produces strong neutron attenuation compared with many metals used in fuel-cell hardware.
A 2021 National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) overview gives approximate neutron 1/e penetration lengths of 11 cm in aluminum and 3 mm in water. These values explain why a neutron beam can pass through substantial aluminum hardware while remaining sensitive to a comparatively thin layer of water. They are approximate reference values, not guarantees for every neutron spectrum, beamline, alloy, thickness or cell configuration.
The basic measurement sequence
- Prepare the imaging cell. Researchers choose windows, seals, current collectors and channel materials that provide mechanical strength while keeping beam attenuation and background manageable.
- Acquire reference images. Dry or otherwise characterized conditions establish the cell’s baseline attenuation. Calibration standards help convert detector counts into meaningful water-related quantities.
- Operate the PEMFC. Gas flow, humidity, temperature, pressure, electrical load and purge events are controlled while the cell reaches the state of interest.
- Record transmitted neutrons. A scintillator or other neutron detector measures the beam after it has crossed the cell. Brightness changes indicate differences in total attenuation along each ray.
- Subtract and reconstruct. Reference correction, detector normalization and geometric reconstruction isolate changes associated with water. Depending on the setup, the result may be a two-dimensional radiograph or a through-plane water-content profile.
- Relate images to performance. The water map is compared with voltage, current, pressure drop, temperature and gas-flow data to identify flooding, drying, transport resistance or transient behavior.
Because the beam crosses all material in its path, a projection usually combines membrane, electrodes, diffusion media, plates and water. Separating those contributions requires a well-characterized cell and careful geometry. A thicker water layer may be easier to detect than a very thin one, but the ability to resolve it spatially and quantify it accurately depends on detector performance, counting statistics and calibration.

What neutron images can tell engineers
Water gradients through the membrane-electrode assembly
Water content can vary from one side of the membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) to the other. Through-plane profiles help show whether electro-osmotic drag, back-diffusion, evaporation or condensation is producing a gradient normal to the membrane. Such information is useful when changing membrane thickness, catalyst-layer structure or humidification strategy.
Diffusion media and flow fields
Gas-diffusion layers and microporous layers must spread reactants while allowing product water to leave. Imaging can reveal water retained in their pore network, liquid moving toward channels, and regions where channel geometry causes accumulation. The same approach can examine water in flow fields and compare behavior at different loads or gas stoichiometries.
Stack-level water management
A single-cell image does not automatically predict a multi-cell stack. Manifolds, shared reactant paths, compression differences and temperature gradients can redistribute water from cell to cell. Neutron imaging has been used to investigate stack water management, helping researchers connect local observations with system-level drainage and purge strategies.
Cold starts and freeze operation
At low temperature, liquid water can freeze and damage porous layers or block gas transport. Imaging during low-temperature and freeze-related operation can track where water remains before shutdown, where ice forms, and whether a start-up or purge procedure removes enough water. These experiments are demanding because thermal transients and limited acquisition speed can blur rapidly changing states.
A historical example: resolution is not the same as routine speed
A U.S. Department of Energy FY 2016 annual progress report by Muhammad Arif and colleagues at NIST described fuel-cell neutron images with 4 µm spatial resolution using slits. The report also described a 17-hour acquisition for the reported slit-scanning through-plane measurement. Those are historical, experiment-specific accomplishments, not current universal specifications for every neutron facility or operating-cell experiment.

The same report mentioned a 0.005-second exposure used to capture individual neutron events for a centroiding method. That exposure was one part of the event-recording technique; it was not the total time required to acquire a complete image. A high nominal spatial resolution can therefore coexist with a long scan when the experiment trades speed for detail and counting statistics.

The observation demonstrates why imaging matters for material development, but it is not a universal ranking of diffusion-media products. Saturation depends on the cell design, compression, gas conditions, temperature, load and measurement method.
X-ray computed tomography adds a complementary view
An ACS review published in 2025 describes operando X-ray computed tomography as a way to observe liquid-water transport and distribution in PEMFC flow fields and MEA components. XCT collects projections as the cell is rotated and reconstructs a three-dimensional volume, allowing researchers to examine channel-scale pathways and component geometry in a way that a single neutron projection cannot.
X-ray and neutron measurements should not be treated as interchangeable. They rely on different interactions, provide different material contrast and impose different constraints on windows, thickness, rotation and operating hardware. The 2025 review establishes XCT as a current research approach, but its abstract does not provide directly comparable performance figures against neutron imaging. There is no evidence here for a universal winner.
Other measurements used alongside imaging
A review record on membrane water content lists internal-resistance measurements, magnetic-resonance methods, neutron and X-ray scattering, and confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy among operando techniques. These methods answer different questions. Internal resistance can indicate hydration-related changes without producing a spatial image. Magnetic resonance and scattering can probe water or structure at particular scales. Raman spectroscopy can provide chemically specific information from an observed region.

Listing a technique does not mean it photographs an entire operating cell. Before comparing methods, define the quantity of interest: total membrane water content, liquid saturation in a porous layer, in-plane distribution, through-plane gradient, transient response or chemical state. Then match that quantity to the method’s spatial and time resolution, cell compatibility and uncertainty.

What limits an apparent “inside view”
Spatial resolution versus acquisition time
Higher resolution generally requires more precise optics, narrower apertures or more neutron counts per location. Slit scanning can produce a fine profile but may require many hours. A faster experiment may sacrifice pixel size, signal-to-noise ratio or quantitative precision. The useful choice depends on whether the question concerns a slow steady gradient or a rapid purge, load step or freeze event.
Temporal resolution and changing conditions
An image collected over minutes or hours represents an average if water is moving during the exposure. Researchers may synchronize short acquisitions with controlled operating states, but very fast transients can remain difficult to resolve. A time stamp alone does not prove that every feature in an image existed simultaneously.
Quantitative uncertainty
Attenuation also comes from plates, seals, electrodes, catalyst layers and windows. Detector noise, beam intensity variation, alignment and dry-state assumptions add uncertainty. A bright or dark region should therefore be reported with its calibration and error estimate rather than interpreted as an exact local water thickness.

Cell design and facility access
Beamline experiments require specialist infrastructure, trained operators and a cell that fits the instrument’s field of view and safety rules. The imaging hardware can constrain channel layout, window material, pressure rating, electrical connections and rotation clearance. Results from a specially built cell may not transfer directly to a commercial stack without checking those design differences.

How to interpret an image without overclaiming
- Check the operating state: temperature, humidity, pressure, gas flow, current and time since start-up or purge.
- Confirm whether the image is a projection, a reconstructed volume or a one-dimensional profile.
- Separate water-sensitive contrast from attenuation caused by hardware and other cell materials.
- Ask whether the acquisition averages over a changing state.
- Keep the reported resolution, scan time and uncertainty attached to the specific experiment and year.
- Compare imaging with electrical and thermal data rather than treating one map as a complete explanation of performance.
Where to go for a deeper engineering reference
For readers who need design-level detail, NIST lists “Use of Neutron Imaging for PEMFC Performance Analysis and Design” as a chapter in Wiley’s Handbook of Fuel Cells, Volume 5. It is a specialist reference rather than a general consumer guide; publication editions and availability can change.
The practical answer
Scientists see inside a running fuel cell by exploiting how an imaging beam interacts with the cell’s materials, especially the strong neutron response of hydrogen-rich water. Neutron radiography can map water transport through an operating PEMFC and has been used to study MEA gradients, porous media, flow fields, stacks and cold operation. XCT offers a complementary three-dimensional view of liquid-water distribution. Neither technique is a universal window: what can be observed depends on cell design, facility, calibration, spatial and time resolution, and the uncertainty of converting transmission into water content.
