IceCube uses Antarctic ice for high-energy neutrino astronomy; Super-Kamiokande is an underground water detector central to solar, atmospheric, and accelerator-neutrino studies; KM3NeT is building two Mediterranean detectors for different energy ranges; and Baikal-GVD instruments Lake Baikal. The right comparison depends on the science target, detector design, and whether a quoted size describes an installed instrument or a planned endpoint.
How the observatories compare
| Observatory | Medium and location | Design and scale | Main scientific role |
|---|---|---|---|
| IceCube | Antarctic ice at the South Pole, near Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station | The built in-ice array has 5,160 digital optical modules on 86 strings and occupies about a cubic kilometre. DeepCore is a denser in-ice region; IceTop is a surface air-shower detector. | High-energy astrophysical neutrinos, with additional work in neutrino physics, cosmic rays, dark matter searches, and glaciology. DeepCore extends the detector’s reach to neutrino energies of about 10 GeV. |
| Super-Kamiokande | Water in an underground detector in Kamioka, Japan | A 50,000-ton tank, 39.3 metres in diameter and 41.4 metres high, with 11,129 inward-facing photosensors. The water figure is the total tank water, not an analysis fiducial mass. | Solar, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrinos, including its role as the far detector for the J-PARC T2K beamline. |
| KM3NeT: ARCA and ORCA | Optical sensors in deep Mediterranean seawater, at sites off Sicily and Toulon | Two detectors with different sensor spacing. The collaboration describes the completed ARCA configuration as about one cubic kilometre and ORCA as about seven megatonnes of instrumented seawater; these are planned end-state dimensions, not a claim that every planned element is installed. | ARCA is the sparser, high-energy cosmic-neutrino detector. Denser ORCA is optimized for lower-energy atmospheric neutrinos and neutrino mass-hierarchy studies. |
| Baikal-GVD | Freshwater in southern Lake Baikal, Russia | An underwater neutrino telescope. The collaboration’s description identifies its goals but does not provide a directly comparable instrumented-volume figure here. | High-energy cosmic-neutrino flux and source identification. |
| ANTARES (historical) | Mediterranean Sea off Toulon, France | A predecessor to KM3NeT and a deep-sea telescope. KM3NeT says ANTARES collected data for 14 years and was decommissioned in 2022. | Useful context for the Mediterranean neutrino programme, but not a current peer to the large-volume observatories. |
Figures for IceCube and Super-Kamiokande come from their official detector pages accessed in 2026; KM3NeT’s dimensions are its stated planned endpoint specifications. The T2K baseline is 295 km, as given in a 2020 J-PARC facility brochure.

Why their designs differ
IceCube: a huge natural-ice array
IceCube detects light from charged particles produced when neutrinos interact in or near the Antarctic ice. Its widely spaced optical modules provide a vast target for rare, high-energy events. DeepCore’s denser instrumentation supports lower-energy measurements, while IceTop adds observations of cosmic-ray air showers at the surface. These components broaden the observatory’s programme without making the whole array equivalent to a compact low-energy detector.
Super-Kamiokande: a contained water detector
Super-Kamiokande uses a large underground tank rather than a kilometre-scale natural medium. Its inward-facing photosensors observe light produced in the water, supporting studies of neutrinos from the Sun, the atmosphere, and accelerator beams. For T2K, the J-PARC beam travels 295 km from Tokai to the far detector at Super-Kamiokande. The tank’s 50,000 tons describe its total water content; analyses can use a smaller fiducial region.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
KM3NeT: two detectors in the sea
KM3NeT assigns different jobs to ARCA and ORCA rather than treating them as interchangeable sections of one uniform array. ARCA’s sparse layout covers a large seawater volume for high-energy cosmic neutrinos. ORCA’s denser layout is intended to register lower-energy atmospheric neutrinos relevant to mass-hierarchy measurements. The collaboration’s cubic-kilometre and seven-megatonne figures describe planned completed configurations, so they should not be read as current installed totals.
Baikal-GVD: a northern freshwater site
Baikal-GVD places optical sensors in Lake Baikal and targets high-energy cosmic-neutrino flux and source identification. Its freshwater setting and northern-hemisphere location make it a distinct observatory, but the cited collaboration information does not support a direct volume or sensitivity ranking against the other instruments.

Which observatory fits which question?
- High-energy neutrinos from cosmic sources: IceCube is a major operating instrument for this field. KM3NeT’s ARCA is designed for the same broad high-energy cosmic-neutrino focus, and Baikal-GVD also pursues cosmic-neutrino flux and source identification.
- Solar, atmospheric, or accelerator neutrinos: Super-Kamiokande is specifically configured for these studies and serves as T2K’s far detector. IceCube’s denser DeepCore region also extends its reach to about 10 GeV, while KM3NeT’s ORCA targets lower-energy atmospheric neutrinos.
- Neutrino mass hierarchy: KM3NeT identifies ORCA as a detector designed for lower-energy atmospheric-neutrino measurements relevant to this question.
- Different environments and sky access: South Pole ice, an underground Japanese water tank, Mediterranean seawater, and Lake Baikal offer geographically and operationally distinct observing settings.
Why detector size is not a sensitivity ranking
A larger instrumented volume can help capture rare interactions, especially at high energies, but volume alone does not establish which detector is more sensitive. Energy range, interaction channel, sensor spacing, backgrounds, event selection, reconstruction, and accumulated exposure all affect the answer. The official descriptions cited here do not provide a shared, current sensitivity measure across all four observatories. A fair comparison therefore needs a specific analysis, energy band, event type, sky region, and date—not a single “best detector” label.

How to read the comparison
- Distinguish a detector’s physical medium and geometry from its scientific target; similar goals do not mean identical instruments.
- Check whether a quoted dimension describes a built configuration or a planned completed design. This matters especially for KM3NeT.
- Do not treat the Super-Kamiokande total tank-water mass as the mass used in every analysis.
- Use ANTARES as historical context: it was decommissioned in 2022 after the 14-year data-taking period stated by KM3NeT.
