Short answer: Max Hodak was describing a possible future display technology, not announcing a Neuralink product or an implant that currently delivers immersive virtual reality. The human-tested Science device is PRIMA, a retinal prosthesis for limited central-vision restoration—not a VR system.
Hodak made the “ultimate AR/VR display technology” comment in a late-2022 interview. He also said the eventual consumer version would use different underlying technology from the clinical microLED concept and that Science first needed to get its medical device into patients.

What Max Hodak actually claimed
Hodak, a Neuralink cofounder who later left and founded Science Corporation, said: “We think we see a way to create what ends up as the ultimate AR/VR display technology without meaningful surgery.” The wording describes a research direction and a prediction, not a product specification, launch announcement or clinical result.

He distinguished two stages. Science’s initial device was intended to address medical vision loss. A later mass-market technology, he said, would use “different underlying technology, not the microLED film.” That distinction matters: the clinical system and the proposed consumer display are not the same implant.

Is this a Neuralink implant?
No. The statement came from Hodak after he had left Neuralink and founded Science Corporation. The device discussed in the interview was Science’s work, not a Neuralink product. Nothing in the cited evidence indicates that Neuralink built, tested or commercialized the proposed display.
How the proposed Science Eye was supposed to work
A retinal target rather than a headset screen
The early Science Eye concept combined gene therapy with a flexible microLED film positioned over the retina. The therapy was intended to make selected retinal or optic-nerve cells sensitive to light after natural photoreceptors had been lost. The microLED layer would then stimulate those cells directly.

Why alignment was the proposed advantage
A display placed at the retina would move with the eye, unlike a glasses-based projector that must continually aim light through the pupil. In principle, that could keep virtual imagery aligned with gaze. It did not establish that the concept could produce the resolution, color, depth cues, field of view or full sensory experience associated with immersive VR.

Hodak’s “without meaningful surgery” line referred to a possible later technology. The clinical microLED concept still involved an implant and biological intervention, and the interview did not establish a completed consumer design, human trial or manufacturing plan.

What has reached human studies: the PRIMA system
Science’s human evidence concerns PRIMA, a related but distinct photovoltaic retinal prosthesis. PRIMA uses a subretinal implant together with camera and infrared-projector glasses. The glasses send infrared light to the implant, which stimulates surviving retinal cells.
| PRIMA evidence | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Study publication | New England Journal of Medicine, October 20, 2025 |
| Participants implanted | 38 |
| Participants assessed at 12 months | 32 |
| Meaningful visual-acuity improvement | 26 of the 32 assessed at 12 months |
| Serious adverse events | 26 events in 19 participants |
| Medical indication | Geographic atrophy caused by age-related macular degeneration |
These results describe restoration of limited central vision in people with a specific retinal disease. They do not demonstrate immersive VR, an AR overlay for healthy sight or the future consumer display Hodak discussed. A 2026 TIME profile summarized the eye-chart improvement as 10 letters after correcting an earlier 20-letter version; the NEJM publication is the appropriate source for the trial’s clinical results.

Could PRIMA or Science Eye create immersive VR?
PRIMA cannot be treated as an “ultimate VR” demonstration. Its purpose is to provide useful visual information to people whose photoreceptors have been damaged by geographic atrophy, and it requires external glasses and processing hardware.

The proposed successor might eventually use a different display mechanism, but no cited source shows that it has entered human trials, received regulatory clearance, launched commercially or received a consumer price. There is also no evidence that it provides sound, touch, vestibular cues or other components of a full-sensory virtual world.

How the three technologies differ
| Feature | Science Eye concept | PRIMA | Conventional VR headset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core mechanism | Gene therapy plus a flexible microLED film over the retina | Photovoltaic subretinal implant activated by infrared projection | Displays mounted in front of the eyes; no retinal implant |
| External equipment | Not established for a finished product | Camera and infrared-projector glasses | Headset electronics and displays |
| Purpose described | Possible future AR/VR display | Limited central-vision restoration | Consumer entertainment, simulation and visualization |
| Human evidence | No cited human-trial result | NEJM clinical study of 38 implanted participants | Established consumer category |
| Commercial status | Speculative research direction | Investigational medical technology | Commercial products exist |
Is the bionic eye available now?
Not as the VR implant described in the headline. Science states that its investigational devices are not available for purchase. The available evidence likewise does not show regulatory clearance or a retail launch for PRIMA, and it provides no price for a future AR/VR successor.
Readers should therefore treat “ultimate VR tech” as a long-term claim about a possible display architecture. The demonstrated milestone is narrower but significant: PRIMA showed that a photovoltaic retinal implant, paired with external glasses, could improve visual-acuity test performance for some people with advanced retinal disease.
