Network Media Player: Definition, How It Works and What to Check Before You Buy

A network media player is a device, or a playback function built into another device, that finds digital media on your home network and plays it through a TV, stereo or home theater system. The media itself usually lives on a computer or a network-attached storage (NAS) box. The player is the playback end of that arrangement.

How a network media player works

The DLNA product directory describes a Digital Media Player as a device that finds content on a server and provides playback. In a typical home, the sequence runs in three steps:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. The media is stored on a server, such as a PC or NAS, which makes it available to other devices on the network.
  2. The player discovers that server and browses its folders or library.
  3. The player selects a file and sends the audio and video to the TV or audio system through its own outputs.

Because the player does the decoding, the file has to be one that the player can handle. The server only has to store and share it.

The four roles in a home media network

DLNA’s product directory lists separate functions for players, renderers, servers and controllers. A product can perform one role or several, so the label on the box does not always tell you how playback is arranged.

Role What it does Example in the cited material
Media server Stores media and makes it available on the network Computers and NAS devices
Media player Finds content on a server and plays it TVs, stereos and home theater systems
Renderer Plays content that a controller sends or starts Not stated in the cited material
Controller Finds content on a server and starts playback on a renderer Not stated in the cited material

Player versus renderer

The two roles are related but describe different arrangements. A player finds content and plays it on its own. A renderer waits for a controller to tell it what to play. The same hardware may be able to act in either role depending on how it is set up and what software it runs.

Servers

The server is the source of the media. Synology’s DSM 6 knowledge base article treats the server as the component that holds and serves the files, separate from whatever device plays them. Keeping these two roles apart helps when a file is visible in a list but will not play.

Devices that can act as a network media player

Sony’s class guide gives TVs, stereos, home theater systems, Blu-ray players and game consoles as examples of playback endpoints. Support still varies by exact model. Two products from the same brand, or the same product category, can differ in supported protocols, file formats and subtitle handling. Check the specification or manual for the model you are considering.

Compatibility: what decides whether a file plays

DLNA compatibility is not automatic

Sony’s DLNA support material says compatible devices can share music, videos and pictures across a home network. The same material warns that not all products are DLNA-compatible. A brand name or a general category such as “smart TV” does not confirm that a particular device supports the functions you need.

File formats and subtitles

Synology’s DSM 6 article explains that the video formats and subtitle display a DLNA player supports depend on that player’s own capabilities. A NAS can store and serve a file that the target player cannot decode. If that happens, check whether your server software offers a conversion or transcoding option, and confirm the current steps in that software’s documentation before changing settings.

Choosing a setup: four comparison points

  • Source: a local PC or NAS library, or an internet service. The sources cited here cover playback from home-network servers. They do not establish which current products support particular online services.
  • Compatibility: supported file formats and subtitles, whether the player can discover your server, and whether the device supports the DLNA or UPnP functions you rely on.
  • Connection and output: whether the device uses a wired or wireless network connection, and which video and audio outputs your TV or stereo needs.
  • Role: a standalone player, a playback function built into another device, or a renderer that is controlled from elsewhere.

An older D-Link listing for a network media player shows the product category and the function that earlier devices advertised. It is a historical example and is not a current recommendation.

Where a NAS fits

A NAS with media-server functions is a separate product from the playback device. It stores and serves your collection, and it is useful if you want one central library that several players can reach. You still need a player that can decode the files you store.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • The player cannot see the server: confirm both devices are on the same home network, confirm media sharing is enabled on the server, and check that the player supports the DLNA or UPnP function the server uses.
  • The file appears but will not play: the most likely cause is a format or subtitle the player does not support. Check the player’s specification, and see whether your server can convert the file.
  • The picture or sound is missing on the TV or stereo: check the physical connections and the output settings on the player, since the network side may be working correctly.

Sources and dates

  • DLNA official product directory: current role vocabulary for player, renderer, server and controller. Its contents may change.
  • Synology Knowledge Center article: written for DSM 6, so its protocol and player-compatibility concepts should be read with that version in mind.
  • Sony USA DLNA support material: indexed as updated February 1, 2024. Sony’s setup FAQ gives a further manufacturer explanation of the client and server arrangement.
  • Sony UK class guide: examples of player and renderer roles.
