Netflix vs. Hulu: Which Streaming Service Is Better for Your Household?

Short answer: Neither service is the universal winner. Choose Netflix when its current catalog, household stream allowance, picture-quality tier, and download limits fit your family. Choose Hulu when its shows are the priority, you want a lower-cost annual on-demand option, or you need live channels through Hulu + Live TV. Compare the exact plans rather than the service names, because advertising, simultaneous viewing, offline access, and bundle contents differ substantially.

The prices below are US-dollar figures from the services’ official pages accessed in October 2026. Streaming prices, promotions, catalogs, device support, and eligibility can change, so verify the checkout page immediately before subscribing.

A quick household decision guide

  • Pick Netflix if the household’s must-watch titles are on Netflix and you want a straightforward on-demand service with clearly stated two- or four-device limits, downloads on a plan-defined number of devices, and a Premium option with 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and spatial audio.
  • Pick standalone Hulu if the shows your household follows are available in Hulu’s current library, you prefer its pricing or annual-billing option, or you want Hulu-specific features such as Watch Party on the Premium plan.
  • Pick Hulu + Live TV only when live channels, sports, news, or scheduled programming justify a much higher recurring bill. It is a different product from Hulu’s on-demand subscription and should be evaluated as a live-TV service.
  • Do not decide from price alone. A cheaper headline plan can become a poor fit if two people need to watch at once, a member needs downloads, a favorite title is unavailable, or the household expects ad-free live television.

Before paying, write down the household’s five or ten must-watch titles, the number of people who watch at the same time, whether anyone watches while traveling without reliable internet, the television and streaming devices in use, and whether live channels are essential. That short inventory usually identifies the right service faster than a generic “best streaming service” list.

What you are actually comparing

Netflix is an on-demand streaming subscription

Netflix’s cited US plans are on-demand subscriptions. They are designed for selecting movies and series from the Netflix library rather than tuning into a package of live cable-style channels. The plan you choose controls advertising, maximum resolution, spatial audio, simultaneous devices, and the number of supported devices that can hold downloads.

Netflix also applies a household-sharing rule. Its Help Center says, "You cannot share your Netflix account outside of your household, which is a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main residence where you watch Netflix." Standard and Premium plans can have extra-member options under Netflix’s rules, but availability and pricing can depend on location and third-party package arrangements. Read the account prompts for your region instead of assuming an extra member is available on every subscription.

Hulu has two materially different products

Standalone Hulu is an on-demand library subscription. Hulu also sells Hulu + Live TV, which combines live channels with Hulu programming and, depending on the selected package, Disney+ and ESPN components. The live-TV product has different pricing, screen rules, advertising, channel availability, local restrictions, and recording terms. Treating it as merely a more expensive Hulu library plan leads to misleading comparisons.

Hulu requires subscribers to be located in the United States. The service’s Help Center states, "To subscribe to Hulu, you’ll need: To be located within the U.S." Location also affects which live channels, local stations, bundles, and promotional offers appear at checkout.

Current US prices and plan features

The table uses the regular prices listed by the official pages, not temporary introductory offers. Netflix figures are US-dollar monthly prices from the Netflix Help Center page accessed October 13, 2026. Hulu’s Help Center page was published September 30, 2026 and says its standalone prices apply to new subscriptions as of September 23, 2026; existing subscribers may see a change on or after October 21, 2026.

Service and plan Listed price Advertising Video, audio, and viewing features
Netflix Standard with ads $8.99/month Commercial breaks in most titles; some titles are unavailable because of licensing restrictions 1080p Full HD; two supported simultaneous devices; downloads on two supported devices at a time
Netflix Standard $19.99/month No ads in the standard Netflix experience 1080p Full HD; two simultaneous devices; downloads on two supported devices
Netflix Premium $26.99/month No ads in the standard Netflix experience 4K Ultra HD + HDR; four simultaneous devices; downloads on six supported devices; spatial audio
Hulu (With Ads) $12.49/month or $124.99/year Ad-supported library Up to 4K UHD, 5.1 audio, and multiple simultaneous devices as listed by Hulu
Hulu Premium (No Ads) $18.99/month No ads in most of the Hulu library; a few rights-limited programs still play a short ad before and after an episode Downloads of select shows and movies; Watch Party; up to 4K UHD and 5.1 audio as supported
Hulu + Live TV with Disney+ and ESPN Select $99.99/month Live and linear programming carries ads; the Hulu library follows its selected tier Live channels plus the listed Disney+ and ESPN Select components; verify channel, screen, and local availability
Hulu Premium + Live TV with Disney+ Premium and ESPN Select $109.99/month Live and linear programming carries ads even though the Hulu library component is Premium Live channels, the listed bundle components, and Hulu Premium’s library benefits; verify current terms
Hulu Live TV Only $98.99/month Live and linear programming carries ads Live TV service without Hulu’s streaming library or Disney+; confirm channel and device terms before purchase

Hulu’s annual standalone option costs $124.99 for a year. At twelve $12.49 monthly payments, the arithmetic total would be $149.88, so the listed annual rate is $24.89 lower over a full year. That comparison matters only if you expect to keep the subscription for the year and the annual offer remains available to you.

Hulu’s page also describes legacy or restricted plans that may not be open to new subscribers. Promotional pages can show a different first-month or limited-time rate, with eligibility and an end date. Treat the amount shown on the final order screen as the authoritative recurring price.

How advertising changes the experience

Netflix Standard with ads

Netflix’s ad-supported plan inserts commercial breaks into most titles. Netflix also says some movies and series cannot be played on that plan because the necessary streaming rights are not available for the ad-supported service. If a specific program is central to your household, check its availability while signed out or through the title details before selecting this tier.

  • Simple and Elegant Home Screen. No ads, no clutter. Customize your home screen with your favorite apps and contents, including direct access to MYTVOnline3 for the ultimate streaming experience.

Hulu With Ads and Hulu Premium

Hulu With Ads is the lower-priced standalone option but includes advertising in the library. Hulu Premium removes ads from most of the on-demand library, not from every piece of programming. Hulu notes that a small number of shows still carry a short advertisement before and after an episode because of streaming-rights arrangements. Those exceptions are different from ordinary mid-program commercial breaks, so “no ads” should be read as “no ads in most of the eligible Hulu library.”

Live TV remains ad-supported

Hulu + Live TV delivers linear channels and live events, where commercials are part of the broadcast feed. Selecting the Premium Hulu library component does not make live channels commercial-free. A household that wants uninterrupted on-demand episodes but also expects ad-free sports or news will need to reset that expectation before subscribing.

Netflix explains its ad-supported restrictions on its Ads on Netflix page. Hulu’s plan page and Hulu + Live TV page describe the corresponding library and live-programming exceptions.

Catalog fit matters more than broad popularity claims

The available information does not establish a complete, like-for-like catalog count or a universal winner. Libraries change, licensing differs by country, and a household’s value comes from the particular titles its members actually watch. A service with thousands of appealing programs is still a poor choice if the family’s recurring favorites are elsewhere.

Build a must-watch checklist

  1. List every series, movie franchise, documentary, children’s program, and sports or news event that someone in the household expects to watch in the next three months.
  2. Check each title on the service’s current US website or app while signed out. Confirm that the exact season, movie cut, language track, and age rating are available.
  3. Mark titles that are available only with ads, only on a particular Hulu bundle, or only on a plan that supports the required device or download feature.
  4. Separate weekly viewing from one-time curiosity. A service built around one short-lived interest may be better rented for a month than kept year-round.

Do not infer catalog size from the number of devices, the price, or a service’s marketing genre labels. Availability can change during a billing cycle, so recheck the titles that determine your decision when you are ready to subscribe.

Simultaneous viewing and household rules

Netflix’s stated device limits

Netflix Standard with ads and Standard each allow two simultaneous devices. Premium allows four. Netflix separately specifies the number of supported devices that can hold downloads. Those are different concepts: a plan can permit two people to stream while allowing downloads on two devices, or Premium can permit four simultaneous streams while supporting downloads on six devices.

Netflix’s household policy is tied to devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Family members who live elsewhere should not assume that a normal password share is permitted. Extra-member slots are offered only under Netflix’s plan and location rules, and the final account page determines whether that option appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hulu’s screen rules depend on the product

Hulu’s standalone listing describes multiple simultaneous devices but does not present one universal number that applies to every playback situation. Confirm the screen allowance for the exact standalone plan and device combination at checkout. Hulu + Live TV describes two screens for the Hulu library and offers an Unlimited Screens add-on for eligible live-TV plans at an additional cost. The add-on’s eligibility and terms should be checked before assuming every television and mobile device can play at once.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

For a household with two adults and children frequently watching separate programs, count the peak number of concurrent streams, not the number of people on the account. A two-stream Netflix tier can be adequate for a couple who usually watch together but frustrating for a family that routinely uses three screens.

Picture quality, sound, and device compatibility

Netflix plan ceilings

Netflix lists 1080p Full HD on both Standard tiers. Premium raises the stated maximum to 4K Ultra HD with HDR and adds spatial audio. Reaching those ceilings also requires a compatible television or monitor, streaming device, app version, connection, and title. A Premium subscription alone cannot turn a 1080p television into a 4K display, and not every title is mastered or delivered at the maximum quality.

Hulu’s stated maximums

Hulu lists up to 4K UHD and 5.1 audio on its standalone plans. “Up to” is important: playback depends on the title, device, operating system, network conditions, and Hulu’s current support list. Live channels can have different resolution and audio characteristics from on-demand programs.

Check the complete playback chain

  • Confirm that the television or monitor supports the resolution and HDR format you expect.
  • Check whether the device’s current Netflix or Hulu app supports the plan feature; older hardware may have a lower ceiling.
  • Use a reliable home network and update the device firmware and streaming app.
  • If an audio receiver or soundbar is involved, verify that it supports the selected audio format and connection path.
  • Test the exact title on the intended device. A service can play 4K on one television while delivering a lower resolution on another.

An optional 4K streaming media player can help when a television lacks a supported app or suitable playback capability, but neither Netflix nor Hulu requires a new player. Check the specific player, television, app, network, and US regional compatibility before buying equipment.

Offline downloads: who can save programs for travel?

Netflix

Netflix lists downloads on supported devices for all three cited plans, with the device allowance tied to the tier: two supported devices for Standard with ads and Standard, and six for Premium. Download availability still depends on the title, device, rights window, and Netflix’s app rules. A download is not a permanent purchase; it can expire or require an internet check.

Hulu

Hulu downloads require the Premium (No Ads) plan and a supported mobile device. Only selected shows and movies are eligible. Hulu says add-on shows and certain Live TV on-demand content cannot be downloaded. If a download icon is missing, the title or device is not eligible rather than necessarily indicating a broken subscription.

Use Hulu’s current download help page to verify supported devices and restrictions. Before a flight or commute, download while connected to Wi-Fi, open the app once to confirm the files appear, and leave enough storage for the selected episodes.

When Hulu + Live TV is the right comparison

Hulu + Live TV addresses a different need from an on-demand service: access to live channels, news, sports, and scheduled programming. The cited page lists a $99.99/month package with Disney+ and ESPN Select, a $109.99/month Premium Hulu bundle with Disney+ Premium and ESPN Select, and a $98.99/month Live TV Only plan. Live TV Only does not include Hulu’s streaming library or Disney+.

Compare the full recurring price with the cost of the services and channels you would otherwise buy separately. Then check local-station availability, regional sports restrictions, channel lineups, simultaneous screens, supported devices, and the current DVR terms. A channel may be unavailable in a particular ZIP code, and a live event can have rights restrictions that do not apply to ordinary on-demand episodes.

Do not compare the $98.99 or higher Live TV prices directly with Netflix’s or standalone Hulu’s library prices as if they were equivalent products. If your household never watches live channels, the live-TV surcharge buys features you will not use. If replacing a traditional cable package is the goal, Hulu + Live TV may be the relevant candidate, but evaluate its channel list and restrictions rather than its brand name.

A practical way to choose in 15 minutes

  1. Identify the decisive content. Select up to ten must-watch titles or live events and verify their current US availability on each service.
  2. Choose the ad tolerance. Decide whether ordinary commercial breaks are acceptable, whether a few rights-related ads are acceptable, and whether live-channel advertising is expected.
  3. Count peak streams. Record the maximum number of people who watch different programs at the same time and match that number to the plan’s stated screen rules.
  4. Measure offline demand. If travel downloads are essential, verify that every traveler’s device and intended titles are eligible. Hulu’s standalone downloads require Premium; Netflix’s limits vary by tier.
  5. Match picture quality to hardware. If the main television is 4K HDR-capable and the household values that quality, compare the plan ceilings and title support. Do not pay for a higher tier solely because one device’s specification sounds impressive.
  6. Separate monthly cost from promotion. Write down the recurring price after any introductory period. For Hulu, compare the annual standalone option with twelve monthly payments only if you expect to remain subscribed for a year.
  7. Check live-TV necessity. If live channels are not on the must-have list, exclude Hulu + Live TV from the comparison. If they are essential, compare the package’s channels, local availability, screen rules, DVR terms, and bundle contents.
  8. Review household eligibility. Confirm the US location requirement for Hulu, Netflix’s household-sharing policy, and whether any extra-member or add-on option is actually offered on your account.

Common problems and how to avoid them

A favorite title is missing

Licensing can vary by service, plan, country, and advertising tier. Check the title page and search results on the exact plan before subscribing. On Netflix’s ad-supported tier, some programs are specifically unavailable because of rights restrictions. On Hulu, a title can be part of the library while a related add-on or Live TV on-demand version remains ineligible for downloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advertised price changes at checkout

Promotions have eligibility requirements and end dates. Hulu’s regular-price page also distinguishes new subscriptions from existing subscribers whose price may change later. Read the order summary for the recurring amount, billing frequency, tax treatment where shown, and promotion end date. Save the confirmation email so you know when to reassess.

Playback stops because too many people are watching

Check the plan’s simultaneous-device limit and stop inactive streams on televisions, phones, or browser tabs. Netflix Standard tiers allow two simultaneous devices and Premium allows four; Hulu limits depend on the specific product, with Live TV’s library screens and any Unlimited Screens add-on governed by separate terms. Do not solve a screen-limit problem by sharing a Netflix account outside the defined household.

A 4K television shows a lower-quality picture

Confirm that the plan supports the desired quality, the title is available in that format, the device and app are compatible, and the network is stable. HDMI equipment, receiver settings, HDR compatibility, and the television’s picture mode can also affect what is displayed. A service’s maximum specification is not a guarantee for every title or device.

The download option is unavailable

On Netflix, verify that the device is supported, the title is downloadable, and the plan’s device allowance has not been reached. On Hulu, confirm that the subscription is Premium, the device is an eligible mobile device, and the program is not an add-on or restricted Live TV on-demand title. Update the app and retry on Wi-Fi only after checking those eligibility rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live channels or local stations are missing

Live-TV lineups and local rights depend on location. Enter the correct ZIP code and review the channel list before paying. A bundle can include Disney+ or ESPN components without carrying every local station or regional sports feed that your household expects.

Which service fits common household situations?

A couple who watches one program together

Start with the must-watch catalog and ad tolerance. Two simultaneous streams may be enough if the couple normally watches together, so paying for a four-stream tier is unnecessary unless 4K, HDR, spatial audio, or additional download capacity is also valuable.

A family with children and separate evening viewing

Peak simultaneous use becomes the deciding constraint. Compare the exact Netflix stream allowance with Hulu’s plan-specific screen terms, then check parental profiles, children’s titles, and download eligibility on the devices used during travel. A lower monthly price is not economical if the family repeatedly hits a stream limit.

A commuter or frequent traveler

Offline rules should be checked before catalog size. Netflix offers plan-defined downloads on supported devices. Hulu restricts downloads to Premium and selected titles on supported mobile devices. Download a sample episode before a trip to confirm the app, storage, and expiration behavior on the traveler’s device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sports, news, or local-channel household

Standalone Netflix and Hulu on-demand plans are not substitutes for live-channel access. Evaluate Hulu + Live TV’s current lineup, local availability, advertising, screen rules, bundle contents, and DVR limitations. If a particular league or station is the reason for subscribing, verify that exact event or channel for your ZIP code before comparing prices.

A 4K home-theater household

Compare Netflix Premium’s stated 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and spatial-audio features with Hulu’s up-to-4K UHD and 5.1-audio listing, then verify title and device support. If only one television is 4K-capable, consider whether everyone will use that screen often enough to justify the higher tier.

Bottom line: choose the plan that removes your household’s biggest constraint

Choose Netflix when its current must-watch catalog and a particular Netflix tier best match the household’s required stream count, download capacity, and picture-quality expectations. Choose standalone Hulu when Hulu’s current episodes or movies are the reason you are subscribing, its billing option fits better, or its Premium download and Watch Party features matter. Choose Hulu + Live TV only when live channels are indispensable and the package’s lineup, local availability, advertising, and recurring price make sense.

There is no defensible universal winner from plan pages alone. Verify the current catalog, final recurring price, promotion terms, device compatibility, and household rules immediately before subscribing, then reassess when the titles or viewing habits that justified the service change.
