Hulu is the better fit when your taste runs toward curated literary adaptations, true stories and prestige dramas such as Nine Perfect Strangers, The Act and Dopesick. That is a practical choice based on each service’s current editorial guides, not an objective ranking of every show or a guarantee that a title is available in your country.
The short answer
| What you care about | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A broad browse of self-contained limited series | Netflix | Netflix Tudum’s May 11, 2026 guide presents 23 weekend-friendly miniseries and limited series, with examples spanning psychological, period and suspense drama. |
| Book adaptations and real-event stories | Hulu | Hulu’s miniseries guide, revised May 21, 2024, is organized around themes that include book adaptations and true stories, featuring Nine Perfect Strangers, The Act and Dopesick. |
| A story that ends without a multiseason commitment | Either | Both services’ guides focus on limited or standalone storytelling. The deciding factor is the specific title and whether all of its episodes are currently available where you live. |
| Confidence that a recommendation is available in your country | Neither without checking | Netflix’s catalog page reviewed here is US-specific, while Hulu directs viewers to current title and season-availability resources. Streaming rights change by region and date. |
Use Netflix when you want to open a service and explore. Use Hulu when you already know you prefer a tightly edited dramatic or true-story lane. If you have one show in mind, search for that show on both services before subscribing; a service cannot be “better” for a title it does not carry in your location.

What “better miniseries” actually means
A miniseries, limited series or limited-story drama is designed to tell a contained story rather than promise several continuing seasons. The labels overlap in everyday streaming language, and the two official guides use both “miniseries” and “limited series.” For a viewer, the useful promise is the same: you can begin with a defined ending in mind instead of committing to a long-running franchise.
“Better” therefore depends on the kind of discovery you want. A service may feel superior because its current home page surfaces more of your preferred genres, because its editorial guide is easier to browse, or because the one show you want is available there. None of those measures proves that every limited series on that service is higher quality. The available evidence consists of curated service pages, not a matched catalog audit, critic score average or audience survey.

What Netflix’s own guide reveals
A large, browse-first editorial list
Netflix Tudum’s guide, published May 11, 2026, is titled “23 Best Miniseries and Limited Series You Can Watch in a Weekend.” Its framing addresses viewers who want a complete story without investing in multiple seasons. The “23” is the number of recommendations named in that article; it is not the number of miniseries in Netflix’s library.
The guide’s language captures the viewing problem directly. Author Allison Picurro writes: “Sometimes there’s nothing more rewarding than escaping into a long series, and other times you’re just not in the mood to get invested in a show with multiple seasons — that’s the life of the TV lover.” That is editorial framing from the guide’s author, not a claim that Netflix beats Hulu on objective quality.
Genre signals from the examples
The titles highlighted by Tudum suggest a varied dramatic menu. Maid and The Queen’s Gambit point toward character-focused and period storytelling; Midnight Mass adds supernatural suspense; Godless represents a period western. These examples are useful signals for someone browsing by mood, but they are not an exhaustive genre map of Netflix’s catalog.

The catalog is current and US-specific
Netflix also maintains an official US limited-series catalog page. It surfaces a changing selection, so a title shown there can disappear or move as licensing and release decisions change. “US” is a material qualification: the page does not establish availability in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia or any other market. Search Netflix while signed in to the account and country where you plan to watch.
What Hulu’s own guide reveals
A theme-led selection
Hulu’s guide is titled “17 Limited Series on Hulu to Obsess Over” and was revised May 21, 2024. It groups recommendations by themes including book adaptations and true stories. The page features Nine Perfect Strangers, The Act and Dopesick, giving the service a clear identity for viewers seeking dramatic adaptations or stories rooted in real events.
The “17” in the headline is a guide-selection count, not a current total of Hulu limited series. It also comes from an older editorial update than Netflix Tudum’s May 2026 guide, so comparing 23 with 17 as though they were simultaneous library measurements would be misleading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy Hulu may feel more curated
Hulu’s organization does more of the sorting for you. If you begin with “I want a book adaptation” or “I want a true story,” the guide provides a thematic route rather than asking you to scan a broad list. That can be more useful than a larger-looking menu when your taste is already specific.

Netflix and Hulu by viewer need
If you want the widest-feeling browse
Start with Netflix. The Tudum guide is explicitly built as a 23-title browse for a weekend-sized commitment and spans several dramatic modes. This is a recommendation about the shape of the editorial page, not proof that Netflix has a larger limited-series catalog overall.
If you prefer books brought to the screen
Start with Hulu’s guide. Its book-adaptation category makes that intent visible, while titles such as Nine Perfect Strangers illustrate the kind of literary drama it highlights. Confirm that the specific season is included in your local Hulu catalog.

If true stories are your priority
Hulu is the more obvious first search because its guide calls out true stories and features The Act and Dopesick. The guide’s category is a discovery signal, not a claim that every Hulu title is based on real events.

If you want psychological or suspense drama
Netflix’s examples provide a stronger initial path. The Queen’s Gambit and Maid represent psychologically focused character drama, while Midnight Mass supplies suspense with supernatural elements. Treat these as examples to investigate, not as a complete list of Netflix genres.
If your main goal is a finished story
Either service can work. Both official pages are about limited or standalone series, so format alone does not separate them. Choose by title, theme and local rights rather than assuming one service has a universal advantage.
The five-minute decision process
- Name the viewing need. Decide whether you are browsing broadly, looking for a book adaptation, seeking a true story, or trying to find a particular title. This prevents a guide’s headline number from making the decision for you.
- Make a short list from the appropriate official guide. Netflix Tudum is the natural starting list for a broad mix of limited-series dramas. Hulu’s thematic guide is the better starting list for literary and real-event selections. Write down two or three titles rather than choosing a service from the guide count.
- Search the exact title in your country. Use the service’s own search while logged into the account and region where you will watch. Netflix’s reviewed catalog page is US-specific; Hulu’s help material instructs viewers to use current title and season-availability information.
- Check every season and episode you intend to watch. A title may appear in a search result while a particular season is unavailable, or rights may differ between countries. Confirm that the complete limited story is present before starting.
- Choose the service that has the strongest available shortlist. If one service has the title you most want, that outweighs a general impression that the other has a broader guide. If both have acceptable options, use your genre preference: Netflix for a wider dramatic browse, Hulu for a more theme-led literary or true-story route.
Why the guide counts cannot settle the comparison
| Figure | What it measures | What it does not measure |
|---|---|---|
| 23 | Recommendations named in Netflix Tudum’s May 11, 2026 article. | Netflix’s total limited-series catalog, the number available outside the US, or a quality score. |
| 17 | Recommendations named in Hulu’s guide revised May 21, 2024. | Hulu’s total catalog, a current 2026 count, or a direct comparison with Netflix’s 2026 article. |
The dates matter. Netflix’s guide is newer, and the services do not describe their lists using the same editorial method. One page may emphasize weekend viewing while another groups titles by theme. A larger headline number can reflect article scope, not a larger or better streaming library.

Availability, geography and changing rights
Streaming catalogs are licensed by territory and can change after an editorial guide is published. Netflix’s limited-series catalog page cited for this comparison is specifically for the United States. Hulu’s availability guidance tells viewers to check current information for the title and season. Those qualifications rule out a universal answer such as “Netflix has more miniseries everywhere.”

Before paying for a subscription, search the exact title in the country where you will watch and verify that all episodes are listed. A recommendation page is useful for discovery; the service’s current title listing is the authority for whether you can play the show now.
A practical shortlist for each service
Netflix route
Open the Tudum list and mark the titles that match your mood. A viewer interested in grounded personal drama might begin with Maid; someone looking for a period setting could investigate The Queen’s Gambit or Godless; someone wanting suspense could check Midnight Mass. These are not endorsements of one title over another. They are the examples Netflix itself uses to demonstrate the range of its limited-series offering.
Hulu route
Open Hulu’s thematic guide and choose the category that best matches your interest. For a literary ensemble drama, investigate Nine Perfect Strangers. For real-event storytelling, investigate The Act or Dopesick. Then confirm the title and season in your local Hulu listing, because the guide was revised in 2024 and rights can change.
What this comparison can—and cannot—prove
The official pages support a qualified editorial recommendation: Netflix is the stronger starting point for a wide-feeling browse of standalone limited series, while Hulu is a strong choice for viewers drawn to curated dramatic and true-story selections. They do not support an exact catalog-size claim, a universal availability claim, an audience-consensus claim or an objective quality ranking.
No audience-preference statistic, like-for-like catalog count or independent evaluation was supplied for either service. The evidence is therefore best used as a decision guide: identify the kind of miniseries you want, use the relevant official list to find candidates, and verify local availability at the moment you subscribe or watch.
Quick Recap
Final decision framework
- Choose Netflix first when you want many directions to browse in one limited-series guide, especially psychological, period or suspense-oriented drama.
- Choose Hulu first when your search starts with book adaptations, true stories or the specific titles Nine Perfect Strangers, The Act or Dopesick.
- Choose neither on reputation alone when you already have a title in mind. Search that title in your country and confirm that every season and episode you need is available.
- Ignore the 23-versus-17 shortcut. Those are article recommendation counts from different dates, not comparable measurements of the services’ libraries.
