If Netflix says, “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy,” it may be reading your connection as coming from somewhere other than your actual location. Netflix recommends turning off the VPN if the warning persists; there is no verified, guaranteed VPN setting that defeats its detection. VPN use can also limit the titles you see and is unsupported for ad-supported experiences and live events.
Why Netflix shows the VPN or proxy warning
A VPN or proxy can route traffic through a different location, so Netflix may not see the location where you are physically watching. Netflix says that can trigger the warning or other problems. A VPN might also be bundled with antivirus or other security software, so check those apps as well as any VPN you deliberately enabled. Netflix’s VPN and proxy error guidance

Netflix does not endorse VPNs as a way to switch to another country’s catalog. It says VPN viewing may show only titles for which it has worldwide rights. The country associated with an account changes only when the member moves. Netflix’s account-country guidance

Turning off a VPN is Netflix’s recommended response when the problem persists. The evidence does not establish which VPN providers work consistently or a durable method to evade detection, so server switching should not be treated as a reliable fix.

How to troubleshoot the Netflix VPN error
- Check your plan. VPNs are not supported on Netflix’s ad-supported experience. If the error code is E121, Netflix identifies that code as potentially related to this combination. Netflix’s “There’s a problem” guidance
- Check for an active VPN or proxy. Look at your device’s VPN settings and any antivirus or security app that may include a VPN. If one is active, disconnect it and try Netflix again.
- Compare Netflix’s detected country with your location. On a device connected to the same network as the affected device, go to fast.com, select “Show more info,” and check the country shown next to “Client.” If it does not match your actual location, turn off the VPN and retry.
- Reset the affected device’s network settings. If the VPN is off, or the “Client” country matches your location but the warning remains, reset the affected device’s network settings. If needed, restore the modem or router’s settings, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ask your internet service provider to check the connection. Note the “Client” country and IP address shown on fast.com, then ask the ISP to confirm they match the connection it assigned and that your device is using its DNS server. Netflix says the ISP may need to work with Netflix if those details are correct. Netflix’s troubleshooting steps
Can you watch Netflix while traveling?
Yes. Netflix says it is available in more than 190 countries, although each country has a different catalog. While traveling, available titles, maturity ratings, audio and subtitle options, and download availability can differ from what you see at home. Use Netflix normally from your travel location rather than relying on a VPN to select another country’s catalog. Netflix’s guidance for using Netflix outside your home
For a second home or frequent trips to the same place, Netflix’s travel guidance recommends connecting from your main viewing location monthly and streaming briefly, then repeating that process after you arrive at the second location. This is account and travel guidance, not a way to unlock a different country’s catalog.

Prepare downloads before a trip
Downloading eligible titles before you leave can help when you expect limited or no internet access. Netflix lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store as devices that support downloads. It recommends using Wi-Fi. Not every title can be downloaded, and some downloads expire. Downloads are subject to title, plan, and device restrictions; they do not unlock another country’s catalog. Netflix’s download guidance
The download page’s localized plan limits may vary by country and plan, so check the limit displayed for your account rather than assuming a number applies everywhere.

What to do if a title is unavailable in your country
Check which legitimate streaming services are available where you are and whether one currently carries the specific title. Catalogs change by country and over time, so confirm the title in the service’s own catalog before subscribing. If it is not available through a service in your location, choose a title that is available there. Netflix’s guidance does not establish VPN use as a supported catalog-switching method. Sometimes Netflix may incorrectly associate an IP address with VPN use. Netflix Open Connect has separate guidance for network operators handling inaccurate VPN flagging. It says properly registering IP allocations with the relevant Regional Internet Registry can help, and that Netflix may take two weeks or longer to discover an allocation change. This is ISP or network-operator work, not a consumer fix or a recommended waiting period for your own connection. Netflix Open Connect
