The company was still profitable before the announcement. Netflix reported second-quarter 2026 profit of $3.4 billion, up 9% year over year, and revenue of $12.56 billion, up 13%. However, its reported third-quarter forecast came in below Wall Street expectations. Those results help explain the tension behind the cuts: strong current earnings do not remove pressure to control costs, improve efficiency and meet investor expectations for future growth.
The layoffs are therefore better understood as a reprioritization of staffing and investment than as evidence that Netflix has become unprofitable. The company’s stated rationale is forward-looking, while the financial figures describe its recent performance; neither by itself predicts how the restructuring will affect future results.

What Netflix’s co-CEOs said
Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos acknowledged the human cost in the employee memo: “Decisions like these are never easy, and we don’t take them lightly.” They said Netflix needed to be “disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources” while investing in future growth and “high impact areas to improve our service.”
That wording frames the reductions as an allocation decision. Netflix intends to preserve or expand work it considers strategically important while reducing staffing in areas it believes can be operated with fewer people or lower priority. The memo does not specify which future projects will receive the freed-up resources.

This is Netflix’s largest announced layoff round since 2022. The earlier cuts came in two rounds totaling about 450 jobs after Netflix lost subscribers for the first time in more than a decade.

Several practical details remain unresolved in the announcement:
- How the roughly 1,000 positions will be divided among countries and departments.
- When affected employees will receive formal notices and when positions will be eliminated.
- Whether Netflix will use hiring freezes, redeployment, severance or other measures alongside the cuts.
- Which product or technology investments the company considers “high impact.”
