Netflix’s workforce was about 16,000 full-time employees worldwide at the end of 2025, according to regulatory filings reported by the Associated Press. Six percent of that employee base equals approximately 960 positions, which accounts for reports describing the cuts as roughly 1,000 jobs.

Why is Netflix making layoffs while profitable?
Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said the business is strong but that Netflix must concentrate people and resources on its highest-priority opportunities. In their employee memo, they said the company needed to be “disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources” while investing in “high impact areas to improve our service.” They also wrote, “Decisions like these are never easy, and we don’t take them lightly.”

Axios reported an additional explanation from the leaders: meeting growth targets requires “making focused choices across the business” so Netflix can continue delivering for members, partners, employees and investors. That framing presents the action as a strategic reallocation of resources rather than an emergency response to a reported quarterly loss.
Is Netflix in financial trouble?
The available financial figures do not show a company reporting a quarterly loss. The Associated Press reported that Netflix posted $3.4 billion in net income and $12.56 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026. Net income was up 9% from the same quarter a year earlier, while revenue increased 13%.

Profitability does not prevent a company from reducing headcount. Management can decide that some work should be consolidated, that investment should move toward faster-growing projects, or that expected growth does not justify maintaining every existing role. Netflix’s stated rationale is prioritization and future growth, not a claim that it cannot pay its employees or meet current obligations.
How this compares with Netflix’s earlier cuts
Coverage places Netflix’s last major layoff round in 2022. The October 2026 action is described as the company’s largest workforce reduction since then. The comparison is limited by the information released so far: the current announcement identifies an approximate percentage, an approximate job count and the most affected functions, while a full historical comparison would require consistent figures for departments, locations and the rationale for each earlier round.
