For U.S. customers, Netflix currently has three consumer plans: Standard with ads at $8.99 a month, Standard at $19.99, and Premium at $26.99. Standard with ads and Standard both provide two simultaneous streams at 1080p Full HD; Premium provides four streams, 4K Ultra HD with HDR, six download devices, spatial audio, and capacity for up to two extra members. The cheapest plan is the value choice if you accept advertising and its download limits, while Premium only makes sense when your household can use its extra screens, higher picture quality, audio, or member capacity.
The prices below are Netflix’s U.S.-dollar examples on its plans page, accessed October 16, 2026. Netflix says prices, taxes, availability, and extra-member eligibility vary by country, package, and add-on.

“Simultaneous devices” means the number of supported devices that can watch at the same time. It is not a limit on how many devices can be signed in or associated with the account.

What the ad-supported plan changes
How often ads appear
Netflix describes the ad-supported experience as including “a few short ads per hour.” Breaks are placed at natural points in a show or movie, and advertisements can appear before or during selected titles. You cannot skip or fast-forward those ads while watching TV shows and movies.
Titles that may be unavailable
A small number of movies or shows can be unavailable on the ad plan because Netflix does not have the necessary advertising rights for that title. The affected item displays a lock icon. This is a licensing restriction, not a playback error, and changing devices will not unlock it on the same plan.
Kids profiles, games, and live events
Netflix does not currently show ads on Kids profiles or in Netflix games. Live events can contain commercial breaks on any plan, including the ad-free tiers, so switching plans does not guarantee an uninterrupted live broadcast.
How many people can watch at once?
Two-screen plans
Standard with ads and Standard each allow two supported devices to stream simultaneously. They fit a household in which two people commonly watch different programs at the same time, but a third concurrent viewer would exceed the plan’s screen allowance.

Premium’s four screens
Premium raises the simultaneous limit to four supported devices. That can prevent interruptions in a larger household, but paying for Premium solely because several people use the account at different times does not provide a benefit; the limit concerns concurrent viewing.
Household and extra-member rules
Netflix says an account is intended for people who live together in one household. People who live elsewhere may be added only as extra members where the plan and country permit that feature. Standard lists an option for one extra member, while Premium lists up to two. The ad-supported plan’s table does not state an extra-member option. Eligibility, pricing, and activation can depend on the country and package, so the option shown in your account is the controlling one.
Is Netflix with ads available in 4K?
No. In Netflix’s current U.S. plan table, Standard with ads and Standard top out at 1080p Full HD. Premium is the plan that adds 4K Ultra HD and HDR. If a 4K television is connected to an ad-supported or Standard subscription, the television can still display other 4K content, but Netflix will not deliver its 4K tier on those plans.
What must support 4K or HDR
A Premium subscription is necessary but not sufficient for 4K playback. Netflix says the title, internet connection, app, display, and every device in the signal chain affect the delivered quality. Its example is a television connected through a streaming stick and an audio receiver: all three devices must support 4K or HDR for the setup to receive that format. A 4K-compatible streaming media player can solve a player bottleneck, but it cannot compensate for a non-4K television, receiver, cable path, app, or title.

What “4K” means on Netflix
Netflix labels “4K or 4K HDR” as its highest currently available resolution. HDR (high dynamic range) can improve contrast and color on compatible equipment, but it is tied to the title and the complete hardware chain rather than being guaranteed for every program. A Premium customer should therefore verify the title’s availability and the capabilities of each connected device before upgrading for picture quality alone.
Downloads and offline viewing by plan
How many devices can hold downloads?
Standard with ads and Standard allow downloads on two supported devices. Premium allows downloads on six supported devices. This is separate from the number of devices that can stream at once: Premium has four simultaneous streams but six download devices.
The ad-plan monthly download allowance
On the ad-supported plan, Netflix limits downloads to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month for two devices. The counter resets on the first day of each month. The allowance is a cumulative monthly limit, not a promise that 15 titles will remain available at any time; titles can also expire or require an internet connection for licensing checks under Netflix’s normal download rules.
Download quality is a separate setting
Netflix’s download-quality control is independent of the plan’s streaming resolution. The setting labeled Standard uses SD. High, also shown as Higher on some devices, can reach up to 1080p/HD when both the device and the title support it. Choosing High produces larger files and consumes more storage, even though it does not turn a 1080p plan into a 4K plan.

Downloads for You
Netflix’s automatic “Downloads for You” feature is unavailable on ad-supported plans. On plans that support it, the feature can automatically save recommended titles for offline viewing; manual downloads remain the way to choose specific programs yourself.
How much data Netflix can use
Netflix publishes figures of up to 3 GB per hour for HD and up to 7 GB per hour for 4K when the account is using High data settings. Actual consumption varies with the title, device, connection, and selected data setting, but these figures show why Premium’s 4K capability matters to households with broadband caps or mobile hotspots.
- HD planning: Allow as much as 3 GB for each hour of HD viewing at the published High setting.
- 4K planning: Allow as much as 7 GB for each hour of 4K viewing at High.
- Offline strategy: Download over Wi-Fi and select SD or HD quality according to available storage and the screen on which you will watch.
If your internet service has a monthly data cap, calculate the hours your household watches before paying for Premium’s 4K feature. A 4K-capable plan can be poor value when the higher data consumption forces overage charges or throttling.

Which Netflix plan is worth it?
Choose Standard with ads when price is the priority
At the U.S. example price of $8.99 per month, Standard with ads is the lowest-cost route to Netflix’s catalog and all games. Choose it when two simultaneous 1080p streams are enough, short ad breaks are acceptable, and the two-device download allowance plus the monthly download cap fit your travel habits. Check for lock icons if a particular movie or series is essential to you.

Choose Standard for two ad-free 1080p streams
Standard costs $19.99 in the U.S. example and removes ordinary show and movie advertising while retaining two simultaneous devices and 1080p Full HD. It is the straightforward choice for a two-person household that does not need 4K, six download devices, spatial audio, or more than one extra-member slot.
Choose Premium for specific capacity or quality needs
Premium costs $26.99 in the U.S. example. The additional cost buys four simultaneous streams, 4K Ultra HD with HDR, six download devices, spatial audio, and up to two extra members. Upgrade when at least one of those capabilities is a real requirement and your television, network, apps, and connected equipment can use it. Do not upgrade simply because a device is labeled 4K; the subscription and the entire delivery chain must qualify.
| Your priority | Most suitable plan | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest monthly price and occasional ads are acceptable | Standard with ads | Two 1080p streams and access to most titles and all games at $8.99 in the U.S. example |
| Two ad-free viewers at 1080p | Standard | Two streams, two download devices, and no ordinary show or movie ads |
| Four viewers at once | Premium | Four simultaneous supported devices |
| 4K/HDR television setup | Premium | The only listed plan with 4K Ultra HD and HDR |
| Downloads on more than two devices | Premium | Six download devices instead of two |
| Spatial audio or up to two extra members | Premium | Those features are listed with Premium |
Practical checks before changing plans
Check your account’s actual offer
- Open Netflix and go to the account or plan-management area.
- Review the plan name, monthly price, taxes, simultaneous-device limit, download-device limit, and any extra-member option shown for your country.
- Confirm whether the plan is offered directly by Netflix or through a package or add-on, because package terms can change availability and billing.
Verify a 4K setup
- Confirm that the title is offered in 4K or 4K HDR.
- Confirm that the television or display supports the desired format.
- Check the streaming player, receiver, cables, and app. Netflix’s guidance requires every device in the chain to support 4K or HDR.
- Use a connection fast enough for the household’s viewing pattern and account for the published data-use figures if your service has a cap.
Prepare downloads for travel
- On each supported mobile device, open Netflix’s download settings.
- Choose Standard for SD files or High/Higher for up to 1080p when supported.
- Download while connected to Wi-Fi, then check that the titles appear in the Downloads section before leaving.
- If you use the ad plan, track the 15-download-per-device monthly allowance and remember that it resets on the first day of the next calendar month.
Common problems and what they mean
A title has a lock icon on the ad plan
The lock generally indicates a licensing restriction affecting that plan. It is not evidence that your app or television is broken. You would need a plan without that restriction, if offered in your market, or another legitimate way to watch the title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlayback is not in 4K after upgrading
Check the title, app, internet connection, display, streaming player, receiver, and cable path. Netflix specifically requires all devices in a connected chain to support 4K or HDR. A single incompatible component can reduce the delivered format.
You cannot download another title
First check the number of supported download devices. On the ad plan, also check whether the 15-total-downloads-per-device calendar-month allowance has been reached. Removing an old file does not necessarily restore a monthly allowance that has already been consumed; the counter resets on the first day of the next month.
Another household member is blocked from watching
Determine whether the problem is simultaneous use or household eligibility. Standard plans allow two concurrent streams and Premium allows four. Netflix’s household policy is based on people living together; someone outside the household needs an eligible extra-member arrangement where available.
Billing, taxes, and regional differences
The dollar amounts in this guide are U.S. examples, not worldwide prices. Netflix states that prices and taxes vary by country, and that plan availability and extra-member eligibility can differ by country, package, or add-on. Your account’s checkout and plan page are authoritative for the amount you will be charged. Netflix bills monthly and does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships.
