If the device is at the account holder’s main home, update the Netflix Household from the TV there. If the viewer lives elsewhere, Netflix says they need their own account or an eligible extra-member arrangement. Which fix applies depends on where the viewer lives and the account’s plan, country, and billing setup.
What the “not in Household” message means
Netflix defines a Household as “a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix.” It automatically establishes the Household when devices sign in using the same internet connection as the TV, drawing on IP address, device IDs, and account activity. The message is therefore a prompt to resolve a Household or membership mismatch; it does not by itself establish that the account has been compromised. First determine whether the viewer lives at the account holder’s main home.

Choose the fix based on where the viewer lives

For a device at the main home: update the Household on the TV
- At the account holder’s main home, open Netflix on the household TV.
- Follow the on-screen process to update the Netflix Household.
- Try Netflix again on the device that showed the message.

For someone who lives elsewhere: use an account option that fits
Netflix says a person who does not live in the Household needs their own account or may be added as an extra member where eligible. Ordinary sharing across separate homes is not the supported fix. Netflix Help Center: Sharing your Netflix account

If the Household update does not resolve it
If the message continues after an update, review the account’s device list for devices you do not recognize or no longer want associated with the account. Do not treat a VPN or proxy as a Household fix: Netflix’s stated remedies are to update the Household from its TV or choose an appropriate account or membership option. The cited guidance does not establish a universal temporary-access or travel-code process, validity period, or frequency limit, so check Netflix Help for the current instructions applicable to your country and device rather than relying on a guessed code workflow.
