For most US households, Standard with ads is the value choice at $8.99 a month, Standard is the straightforward ad-free option at $19.99, and Premium is justified when four people need to watch at once, 4K HDR matters, or you need more download and extra-member capacity. Netflix bills monthly on your signup date. The figures below are the current US plan-table prices and can change with taxes, bundles, or add-ons.
Netflix plans at a glance
Netflix’s current US lineup has three consumer plans. The discontinued Basic plan is not an option for new plan selection. The table separates the limits that usually decide the purchase: monthly price, advertising, simultaneous viewing, picture quality, downloads, and account-sharing capacity.

What Standard with ads actually includes
The lower-cost trade-off
Standard with ads costs $8.99 per month because Netflix inserts advertising into the viewing experience. Netflix describes the format as “a few short ads per hour.” Commercials can appear before a title starts and during selected movies or shows, with the company aiming to place breaks at natural plot points. They cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while you are watching a show or movie.
#1 Best Overall
- Unlimited movies, TV shows, and more. Watch anywhere. Cancel anytime.
- Give the gift of entertainment so your friends and family can stream unlimited films and Netflix original series. Whether your loved one already has a Netflix account or they will be creating a new account, they can use a Netflix gift card toward their membership.
- No credit card is required to redeem a gift code.
- Codes are applied to your account as a gift balance
- Redemption: Online
The plan still provides 1080p (Full HD), two simultaneous streams on supported devices, and downloads on two supported devices. In other words, the savings do not reduce the listed resolution or stream count compared with Standard; advertising is the principal day-to-day difference.
Titles that are unavailable
Most of Netflix’s catalog is available on the ad-supported experience, but a small number of movies and TV shows are excluded because of licensing restrictions. An unavailable title displays a lock icon. This is a catalog limitation rather than a playback error, so reinstalling the app or changing a device will not unlock it.
Profiles and games
Netflix says ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games. Live events can contain commercial breaks on every plan; choosing an ad-free plan removes commercial breaks from the replay after the live event, but does not guarantee that the live broadcast itself has no breaks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere the plan is offered
Netflix’s Standard with ads product page lists availability in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Availability can vary for customers billed by a third-party partner, and some packages do not support the plan. If the option is missing from your account, check whether your billing relationship or bundle is controlling the available plans before assuming your device is the cause.
What Standard changes when you remove ads
Standard costs $19.99 per month and keeps the same headline capacity as Standard with ads: 1080p video, two simultaneous supported devices, and downloads on two supported devices. Its distinction is that regular ads do not interrupt shows and movies. That makes it the direct choice for a household that accepts two streams and Full HD but considers commercial interruptions unacceptable.

Standard also lists one extra-member slot. Netflix defines the account household as devices connected to the internet at the main residence; people outside that household cannot simply use the account’s password. An eligible extra member must be added through Netflix’s extra-member arrangement, discussed below.
What Premium adds
Four-person simultaneous viewing
Premium raises simultaneous viewing from two to four supported devices. This is the practical upgrade for a household where parents, children, roommates, or guests may all watch different titles at the same time. The limit is concurrent playback, not the number of profiles you can create.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →4K HDR and spatial audio
Premium lists 4K (Ultra HD) with HDR rather than 1080p. It also includes spatial audio. These features matter only when your viewing setup and the specific title support them, so paying for Premium solely for the label is unlikely to help a household that watches on Full HD equipment or does not value immersive audio.
More offline capacity and members
Premium allows downloads on six supported devices, compared with two on either Standard plan. It also permits up to two extra members, whereas Standard lists one and Standard with ads has no extra-member capacity listed in the plan table.
Streams, downloads, and profiles: limits people often confuse
Simultaneous viewing is not the device count
“Two devices” on Standard with ads and Standard means two supported devices can stream at the same time. Premium allows four. A family can own more phones, tablets, televisions, or computers than that number; the restriction applies when playback overlaps.
Rank #3
- Unlimited movies, TV shows, and more. Watch anywhere. Cancel anytime.
- Give the gift of entertainment so your friends and family can stream unlimited films and Netflix original series. Whether your loved one already has a Netflix account or they will be creating a new account, they can use a Netflix gift card toward their membership.
- No credit card is required to redeem a gift code.
- Codes are applied to your account as a gift balance. Gift codes can be added to any plan, regardless of the amount.
- Redemption: Online
Downloads are counted separately
Offline downloads are permitted on two supported devices for Standard with ads and Standard, and six supported devices for Premium. A download-device allowance does not increase the number of live streams, and a live-stream allowance does not increase the number of download devices. If several travelers need offline viewing, count the devices that will store downloads rather than the people who use them.

Resolution is a plan feature, not a guarantee for every title
Both Standard plans list 1080p (Full HD), while Premium lists 4K plus HDR. The plan table describes the maximum tier Netflix assigns to the plan; actual playback can still depend on a title’s availability and the capabilities of the device and connection you use.
Household sharing and extra members
Netflix states that you cannot share an account outside your household. Its household definition is based on devices connected to the internet at the main residence. A person who lives elsewhere therefore needs their own account or an extra-member slot where Netflix makes that option available.
For the current US plan table, Standard includes one extra member and Premium includes up to two. Netflix lists extra-member pricing of $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 per month without ads. The plan table does not list an extra-member allowance for Standard with ads. Eligibility, the number of slots, and the price can be affected by the way you pay for Netflix, so verify the offer shown in your account before treating the listed amount as guaranteed for a bundle.
How to decide whether an extra member changes the best plan
- If nobody outside the household needs access, compare only your own price, ad tolerance, stream count, resolution, and downloads.
- If one person outside the household needs access and you want an ad-free account, Standard’s single extra-member slot may be sufficient.
- If two people need separate access, Premium is the only listed plan with capacity for up to two extra members.
- If an extra member is billed with ads or without ads, include that recurring charge in the household’s monthly total rather than comparing only the base subscription.
How Netflix billing works
Netflix bills monthly on the date you sign up. There is no annual plan or lifetime plan in the current US offering. A displayed monthly price may not be the final amount charged if applicable taxes are added.
Rank #4
- Unlimited movies, TV shows, and more. Watch anywhere. Cancel anytime.
- Give the gift of entertainment so your friends and family can stream unlimited films and Netflix original series. Whether your loved one already has a Netflix account or they will be creating a new account, they can use a Netflix gift card toward their membership.
- No credit card is required to redeem a gift code.

Prices and extra-member eligibility can differ when Netflix is obtained through a mobile, broadband, pay-TV, or other partner package. Those arrangements may bundle payment or service benefits, but the package provider controls its own terms. If your account shows a different price or omits a plan, use the terms for that billing channel rather than assuming the standalone US table applies.

Choose Standard with ads when price comes first
Select Standard with ads if $8.99 is the overriding priority, you can tolerate short breaks before and during selected titles, 1080p is enough, and no more than two supported devices need to play simultaneously. It also suits viewers who rarely download on more than two devices. Check for lock icons on must-watch titles if your household depends on a particular movie or series.
Choose Standard when you want simple ad-free viewing
Standard is the middle option for a household that needs two streams and 1080p but wants regular show and movie advertising removed. The additional $11 per month over Standard with ads buys the ad-free experience and adds one listed extra-member slot; it does not increase stream count, resolution, or download-device count.
Choose Premium for capacity or higher-quality playback
Premium makes sense when four people may watch at once, your setup and viewing habits make 4K HDR worthwhile, six download devices are useful, spatial audio is desired, or two extra-member slots are needed. If none of those conditions applies, its $26.99 monthly price pays for headroom you may not use.

- Count the maximum number of people who may watch at the same time, not the total number of household members.
- Decide whether commercial breaks in shows and movies are acceptable.
- Check whether 1080p meets your needs or whether Premium’s 4K HDR and spatial audio features matter to your setup.
- Count the devices that need offline downloads.
- Identify anyone outside the household who needs access and compare the listed extra-member capacity and recurring fee.
- Confirm the price, taxes, and eligibility shown by your billing channel before completing the change.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“I paid for ad-free, but a live event still has commercials.”
Live events can include commercial breaks on all plans. After the event, Netflix says the replay’s ad-free experience removes those commercial breaks. This behavior is different from regular on-demand shows and movies.

“A movie has a lock icon on my ads plan.”
The title is unavailable under the ad-supported license. It is not a fault with your app or internet connection. Watching it requires a plan or availability arrangement that includes that title; Netflix does not promise that every title is licensed for the ads tier.
“A relative cannot keep using my account from another home.”
Netflix’s household rule prohibits direct sharing outside the household. Add the person as an eligible extra member if your plan and billing channel provide that option, or have them use a separate account.
“My partner bundle does not show Standard with ads.”
Some third-party billing partners and packages do not support the ads plan. Review the partner’s Netflix terms or switch to Netflix billing if that is available and appropriate; plan visibility is controlled by the billing arrangement.
What the ads tier indicates about Netflix’s strategy
Netflix said in its 2024 shareholder letter that ads serve two strategic purposes: enabling lower consumer prices and creating another revenue and profit stream. In the same letter, Netflix reported that more than 45% of signups in markets with ads were for the ads tier in the second quarter of 2024. That is historical context, not a current 2026 share, and it does not predict which plan is cheapest for your particular household.
The practical lesson is to treat the ads plan as a deliberate trade: lower recurring cost in exchange for interruptions and a smaller licensed catalog. Standard and Premium remove regular on-demand ads, while Premium additionally buys capacity and higher listed video and audio specifications.
