Netflix plans compared (October 2026): features, ads, screens, downloads and who each is for

For US customers, Netflix has three monthly tiers: Standard with ads at $8.99, Standard at $19.99, and Premium at $26.99 (prices checked October 13, 2026). Standard with ads is the low-cost option but includes commercial breaks, a 15-downloads-per-device monthly cap and a small set of locked titles. Standard removes show and movie ads while keeping 1080p and two simultaneous streams. Premium adds 4K HDR, Netflix spatial audio, four simultaneous streams and six download devices. Netflix says prices, available features and extra-member rules can differ by country or by a package billed through another provider, so check the plan page shown in your own account before subscribing.

What are the Netflix plans?

The table below reflects the US-dollar prices and features displayed on Netflix’s English-language Plans and Pricing page when checked October 13, 2026. Netflix does not publish a date on that page, and it warns that local prices and eligibility can change. Treat these figures as a US snapshot rather than a worldwide price list.

US extra-member pricing shown by Netflix is $7.99 per month each with ads or $9.99 per month each without ads. Netflix notes that eligibility and prices vary by market, package and billing arrangement.

How much is Netflix per month?

Netflix bills monthly on the date you started the subscription. It does not offer annual, multi-month or lifetime memberships. You can change tiers or cancel online; a change can take effect immediately or at the next billing point depending on the direction of the change and the account’s billing terms.

The displayed US amounts are recurring monthly rates, not introductory promotions. A package from a mobile, broadband or television provider can use different pricing or rules, so compare the total package cost and the provider’s terms rather than assuming Netflix’s direct-billed rate applies.

Which Netflix plan has ads?

Standard with ads

Standard with ads places a few short commercials before or during selected movies and television episodes. Ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while a show or movie is playing, although playback can be paused. Some newly released movies may put ads only before playback. Netflix says a small number of titles cannot be licensed for the ad catalogue; those titles display a lock icon rather than playing on this tier.

Live or special events can include commercial breaks on any plan, including the two ad-free tiers. Therefore, “ad-free” describes regular shows and movies, not a guarantee that every live broadcast or other commercial content is interruption-free. Netflix says advertisements are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games.

Before choosing the ad tier

  • Open the titles your household actually watches and check whether any show or film is marked with a lock.
  • Confirm that each television, streaming player, console or mobile setup supports Netflix’s ad experience. Netflix provides an in-app Plan Compatibility check.
  • Expect casting or mirroring from a mobile device to a television to be unavailable on the ad-supported experience.

How many screens can watch Netflix at once?

“Screens” in Netflix’s comparison means simultaneous streams: the number of supported devices that may play at the same time. Standard with ads and Standard allow two concurrent streams; Premium allows four. This is not the same as the number of devices that can be signed in, and it is separate from the number of devices authorized for downloads.

Netflix defines a household around devices connected to the internet at the main residence where the account is watched. Someone who lives outside that household may need to be added as an extra member, where the account and market permit it. Netflix’s rules are account-based, so moving between homes, travel and package billing can produce different verification or eligibility screens.

How extra members work

Only Standard and Premium accounts can add extra members. The account owner pays for and manages each slot, while the extra member receives a separate account login, password and profile. An extra member must be in the same country as the account owner. Accounts billed through some packages or third parties cannot use the feature.

An ad-supported extra member has a more limited specification than the main Premium or Standard account: 1080p maximum video, no spatial audio, one profile, one simultaneous device and one download device, plus a limit of 15 downloads per calendar month. Netflix can change the available slot count and price by country, so the option shown in Account settings is the authoritative one for your subscription.

Downloads and offline viewing

Device allowances

The plan comparison lists two download-supported devices for Standard with ads and Standard, and six for Premium. These are device allowances, not a promise that every title can be downloaded forever; licensing windows and the title’s own download controls still apply.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

The ad-plan monthly cap

Ad-supported plans have an additional limit of 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The allowance resets on the first day of each calendar month. Reaching the cap does not mean the account has used all of its two download devices; it means that a particular device has reached its monthly quota.

Automatic downloads

Netflix’s automatic Smart Downloads functions, including Downloads for You and Download Next Episode, are not available on ad-supported plans. Manual downloads remain governed by the device allowance and, on the ad tier, the monthly cap. If automatic offline viewing is important for commuting or travel, check that the feature appears in the Downloads settings before changing plans.

Is Netflix Premium worth it for 4K?

Premium is the only listed tier with 4K Ultra HD, HDR and Netflix spatial audio, and it raises simultaneous streaming from two to four and download devices from two to six. Those benefits matter only when all of the links in the chain support them:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The specific movie or episode must be available in 4K or HDR; not every title is.
  • Your television, monitor or projector must support the relevant 4K and HDR formats.
  • Your streaming device, app version and connection must be capable of delivering the higher-quality stream.
  • For spatial audio, compatible audio equipment and a title carrying the feature are required.

If the household uses a 1080p display, watches mostly on phones or tablets, or rarely has more than two people streaming, Premium’s headline upgrades may not be visible. In that situation, Standard supplies ad-free viewing at 1080p without paying for unused resolution or stream capacity.

What Standard is designed for

Standard is the middle tier for a household that wants regular shows and movies without commercial breaks, but does not need Premium’s 4K/HDR, spatial audio or four-stream allowance. Its 1080p Full HD output suits compatible televisions, computers and mobile devices that do not display 4K. Two simultaneous streams cover a couple or a small household that coordinates viewing times.

The plan also includes the same two download-supported devices listed for the ad tier, but without that tier’s 15-per-device monthly quota. Automatic Smart Downloads availability follows the non-ad-supported experience, subject to Netflix’s title and device rules.

What Standard with ads is designed for

Standard with ads is aimed at viewers who prioritize the lowest direct Netflix price and can accept interruptions and occasional catalogue gaps. It still lists 1080p Full HD, two simultaneous streams and two download devices, so its lower price is not a reduction to standard-definition video. The trade-offs are the commercial breaks, locked licensed titles, the 15-download monthly cap per device, the absence of Smart Downloads automation and possible device restrictions.

Check compatibility before downgrading an existing account. Netflix says some older app and device combinations do not support the ad experience, and the in-app Plan Compatibility check is the quickest way to identify a problem on your account.

Choosing a plan: a practical decision path

  1. Set your market and billing route. Select your country on Netflix’s local Plans and Pricing page, and note whether a carrier or television package bills the subscription. Do not use the US table as a quotation for another country.
  2. Decide whether interruptions are acceptable. Choose an ad-free tier if commercial breaks or locked titles would disrupt the household’s regular viewing. Choose Standard with ads only after checking the catalogue and device compatibility.
  3. Count concurrent viewers. Use two-stream plans when no more than two supported devices will play at once. Consider Premium when three or four people regularly watch different titles simultaneously.
  4. Match the display and audio system. Select Premium for a real 4K/HDR and spatial-audio setup that will play supported titles. A 1080p screen cannot reveal the extra resolution.
  5. Plan offline use. Compare the number of download devices with how many people travel, then apply the ad tier’s separate 15-download monthly cap if relevant.
  6. Check sharing needs. If someone outside the household needs their own access, confirm that your account offers an extra-member slot, that the person is in the same country and that your billing package allows the feature.

Devices, compatibility and common pitfalls

Netflix supports compatible internet-connected smart televisions, game consoles, streaming media players, cable boxes, phones, tablets and computers. Netflix also cautions that a small percentage of devices may not support every plan. Compatibility is therefore a plan-and-device question, not a requirement to purchase a particular television or streaming box.

If the ad plan will not play

  • Run the Plan Compatibility check in the Netflix app on the affected device.
  • Update the Netflix app and the device software where updates are available.
  • Try a supported device such as a current computer or mobile app to determine whether the limitation is device-specific.
  • Do not rely on mobile casting or mirroring to a television; Netflix says that method is unavailable for the ad-supported experience.

If someone sees a “too many devices” message

First distinguish simultaneous streams from downloads. A two-stream plan can have more than two devices signed in, but only two can play at the same time. Download limits concern the devices storing offline titles and, on the ad tier, the number of downloads made during the current calendar month. Closing an active stream or removing an old download addresses a different limit than changing the plan.

If a title is missing

On Standard with ads, a lock icon generally indicates a licensing restriction for that tier rather than an account fault. Search the title while signed in to confirm its status; moving to an ad-free plan may make it available, but Netflix’s catalogue still varies by country and licensing period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing or cancelling your plan

Netflix states that members can change plans or cancel online. Review the confirmation screen for the effective date, revised charge and any package-billing instructions. If a third party collects the payment, Netflix may direct you to that provider for changes or cancellation. Keep the confirmation email or account notice until the final billing period ends.

Bottom line

Choose Standard with ads when the lowest US monthly price matters more than commercial breaks, locked titles and download restrictions. Choose Standard for straightforward ad-free 1080p viewing on up to two simultaneous devices. Choose Premium when your household can use 4K/HDR or spatial audio, needs up to four concurrent streams or benefits from six download devices. Recheck your local Netflix account before paying: country, device, household and package rules can change the result.
