What Netflix’s password-sharing rule means
Netflix’s stated rule is: “You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.” A household is based on the account holder’s main viewing location, not on a list of relatives, friends or people who are allowed to know the password.

Someone who lives elsewhere has two legitimate routes:
- Create a separate Netflix account. The person pays for and controls that account independently.
- Become an extra member. In supported countries and billing arrangements, an owner of an eligible Standard or Premium plan can purchase a slot and invite someone who does not live at the primary address.
Whether the paid extra-member option appears depends on the country, plan, billing method and package. Ad-supported plans and some accounts billed through third parties are excluded.

What a Netflix Household is
Netflix establishes the Household from the devices that use the same internet connection as the account’s main television. Netflix describes the signals as the internet protocol (IP) address, device IDs and account activity. It says it does not collect GPS data to determine a device’s precise physical location.
The practical result is that a television connected to the home Wi-Fi normally becomes the anchor for the account. Phones, tablets and computers that regularly use that home connection are more likely to be recognized as belonging to the same Household. A television or streaming device that spends its time on another internet connection may be asked to verify itself.
The Household is not a permanent legal address. If the main viewing location changes, the account holder can update it from a television using Update Netflix Household. This should be done only for the place where the account holder primarily watches, not to authorize a second home or another person’s residence.

Can you share a password with someone who lives elsewhere?
Not under the standard Household rules. Netflix’s Help Center explains that people outside the Household need their own account or must be added as an extra member. Giving a friend or relative the ordinary profile and password does not turn that person into a Household member.
The restriction applies even when the account holder is happy to pay for the subscription. Payment responsibility and Household membership are separate issues: the owner can pay for an extra-member slot, but the slot must be available for that plan and country.

How extra members work
Eligibility
Extra members are generally available to owners of Standard and Premium plans in countries where Netflix offers the feature. The invited person must activate the extra-member account in the same country as the account owner. Netflix lists several exclusions:
- Ad-supported plans cannot add extra members.
- Some packages billed by a third party do not support the feature.
- Availability varies by country and can change with the billing arrangement.
If the extra-member control is missing from the account page, the plan, country or billing package may be ineligible. Do not assume that changing a profile name or sharing the password will provide the same rights.

What the extra member receives
An extra member has a separate sign-in, password and profile. The account owner pays for the slot and manages it, but the extra member does not use the owner’s main profile. Netflix limits an extra member to one profile and one supported device at a time.
Those limits matter for families or groups. If the person needs multiple profiles, more simultaneous devices, or an account activated in another country, a separate account is required instead.
How to add one
- Confirm that the account is on Standard or Premium and that the country and billing method support extra members.
- Open the Netflix account-management page and select the extra-member purchase or invitation control shown for the plan.
- Review the recurring price and the number of available slots before confirming. The account owner remains responsible for the charge.
- Send the invitation to the person who lives outside the Household.
- Have the invitee activate the account in the same country as the owner and create the separate password and profile.
- Check that the new member can sign in on a supported device. If the person needs additional profiles or simultaneous devices, cancel the slot and use a separate account instead.
An extra-member slot is not a way to move an account between countries. Country eligibility and activation requirements still apply after the invitation is sent.

For a single person who watches on one device and wants the owner to handle payment, an extra member may be sufficient. A household with children, several viewers or independent billing usually needs a separate account.
Profiles are not extra members
A regular Netflix account can have up to five profiles. Profiles are personalization spaces inside one Household account; they do not create separate Household rights. A fifth profile does not authorize a person who lives at another address.
An extra member is different: it has its own sign-in and password, but only one profile and one supported device at a time. Netflix also supports profile transfer, which can move a profile’s recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings into a new account or an extra-member account. Profile transfer can preserve personalization without giving the transferred person access to the old account’s other profiles.
How Netflix handles travel
Travel is not blanket permission to share a password with someone at home or at another permanent address. When a device or television is away from the Household, Netflix may ask for verification.

Temporary verification steps
- Open Netflix on the away television or device.
- When the Household message appears, choose I’m Traveling.
- Request the temporary verification code sent to the account’s email address or phone number.
- Enter the four-digit code on the traveling device before it expires. The code is valid for 15 minutes.
Netflix recommends opening the app on the Household Wi-Fi at least once a month when possible. That regular connection helps confirm the main Household before future trips. Use a non-Kids profile for the travel verification flow; a Kids profile may not provide the same option.
If the code was requested by someone who should not have access, do not forward it. Review the account’s recently active devices, sign out unfamiliar devices and change the password.
Why Netflix says a TV is not part of the Household
The message usually means the television is using an internet connection that Netflix does not associate with the established Household, or that the Household needs to be updated after a move or network change. It does not necessarily mean the subscription has been canceled.
Fix the main home television
- Connect the television to the internet connection used at the account holder’s primary viewing location.
- Open Netflix on that television and choose Update Netflix Household when prompted.
- Confirm the update using the account email or phone instructions shown on screen.
- After the update, reopen Netflix on the other devices that normally use the same home connection.
Fix a legitimate traveling device
- Choose I’m Traveling and use the temporary code promptly.
- Reconnect to the Household Wi-Fi at least monthly when possible.
- Ask the account owner to check the active-device list if verification messages continue unexpectedly.
When the account may be misused
An unfamiliar device, an unexpected code request or repeated prompts from a location nobody recognizes can indicate that someone else has the password. Sign out of all devices, change the password and share the new password only with people who are authorized to use the account under the Household or extra-member arrangement.

The extra-member price is charged to the primary account owner. Before accepting an invitation, compare the recurring slot cost with the price of a separate account in the invitee’s country. A US figure should not be converted into a promise about another market.
Account-holder checklist
- Decide which television and home internet connection should define the Household.
- Update the Household from that television if the primary viewing location has changed.
- Review recently active devices and sign out anything unfamiliar.
- Change the password after an unexpected verification request or unknown-device alert.
- For someone living elsewhere, check plan eligibility, country, billing package and the recurring extra-member price.
- Explain that an extra member receives one profile and one supported device, not the full flexibility of a separate account.
- Tell travelers to use a non-Kids profile, request the code only when needed and enter it within 15 minutes.
Choosing the right arrangement
Family member in the same home
Use a profile on the existing account. The person remains inside the Household, and the account can contain up to five profiles.
Friend or relative at another address
Do not rely on password sharing. Check whether an extra-member slot is offered for the owner’s Standard or Premium plan. If not, use a separate account.
Frequent traveler
Keep the account anchored to the primary home. Use I’m Traveling and the temporary code when Netflix asks for verification, then reconnect to Household Wi-Fi at least monthly when possible.
Person who moved abroad
An extra-member invitation is not designed for activation in another country. A separate account in the new country is the appropriate route, subject to that market’s plans and prices.
Several viewers or children at the second address
The one-profile and one-device limits make an extra member a poor fit. A separate account provides independent control and avoids trying to use one slot for multiple people.
Bottom line
Netflix’s Household rule is location-and-device based: ordinary password sharing is for people in the same primary home. Use an extra-member slot only when the plan, country and billing method support it; otherwise create a separate account. Treat travel verification as temporary access for the account holder’s device, not as a workaround for permanent out-of-household sharing.
