A Netflix TV app needs an internet connection for streaming; it does not play offline downloads. If you have cellular service, a hotspot can also bring internet to a compatible TV or streaming device, but live streaming uses mobile data.
First, check whether Wi-Fi is missing—or all internet is
Wi-Fi is only one way to connect a TV to the internet. If your home network is available through Ethernet or another supported connection, connect the TV or streaming device and use its Netflix app. Follow the device maker’s instructions for wired networking; Netflix’s device guidance establishes the internet requirement but does not cover every network setup. Netflix’s supported-device guidance and its TV viewing instructions describe internet-connected viewing.

If there is no internet connection at the TV, you cannot stream from its Netflix app. Netflix describes its service as viewing shows and movies on an internet-connected device. The available workaround depends on whether you can provide internet another way or have prepared an offline download on a mobile device.

Play a downloaded title from a phone or tablet on the TV
Netflix downloads are for certain mobile devices, not the Netflix app on a TV. Netflix names Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPad, and Google Chromebook among devices that can download, but availability depends on the device, plan, and title. A compatible phone-to-TV wired connection is the clearest route when no internet is available at the TV.

- Download and check the title while you have a connection. In Netflix, find the show or movie and look for the Download icon. If the icon is absent, Netflix says the title cannot be downloaded. See Netflix’s download troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm the phone or tablet can output video. Check the exact model and port, then use a video cable or adapter compatible with both the device and TV. An HDMI connection requires an adapter that supports video playback.
- Connect the device to the TV. Plug the cable or adapter into the mobile device and the TV’s HDMI input, then select that input on the TV.
- Open Netflix and play the downloaded title. Stay signed in and make sure the download is available on the device. If playback fails, the device or adapter may not support Netflix video output.
Netflix’s cable, casting, and mirroring guidance gives these compatibility details:
- Android phones and tablets: Netflix supports connecting to a TV or display with a video cable or adapter. For USB-C or Thunderbolt, the cable must support high-resolution video playback; Netflix specifies USB 3.1 or later for other USB-C/Thunderbolt cables.
- iPhone or iPad with Lightning: Netflix identifies Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter and lists compatible model numbers A1438 or A1621.
- USB-C iPhone or iPad: Use an HDMI adapter that supports video playback. Netflix recommends Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, while noting that other adapters may work. Some iPhone models do not support wired video output.
Do not assume a generic charging cable or adapter will carry video. Netflix warns that device and adapter compatibility can prevent playback, so verify the exact models before buying or depending on the connection.

Use a hotspot when you want live streaming
If your phone has cellular service, a hotspot can provide internet to a TV or streaming device that can join that hotspot. The TV still needs a compatible network connection, and the mobile signal must be strong enough for streaming. This option is live streaming, so it can use a substantial amount of your cellular allowance; Netflix’s cited instructions do not quantify data use. Check your plan and signal conditions before starting.

Netflix’s steps are to open Download Settings or Download Now when prompted to wait for Wi-Fi, switch off Wi-Fi Only, then go to Downloads and tap Download. The download may not begin immediately after changing the setting. Pending downloads can also prevent the setting from being changed. Downloading uses your mobile plan’s data allowance.

Prepare downloads before you lose internet
- Sign in to Netflix on the device you intend to use and download titles while you have a connection. Netflix says its downloads are available on certain phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, depending on plan.
- Check each title for the Download icon; not every show or movie is eligible.
- Confirm the downloaded title is present and your phone or tablet supports wired video output to the TV.
- Test the exact cable or adapter and HDMI input while you can still troubleshoot. Netflix notes adapter and device compatibility can interfere with playback.
- If you are downloading over cellular, make sure your plan has enough data. The mobile-data instructions do not state a fixed amount because usage is not quantified there.
Netflix’s feature called Downloads for You is separate from manually choosing a title to download. Netflix says it works over Wi-Fi, is available for Android phones and tablets, iPhone, and iPad with the latest app, and is unavailable on ad-supported plans. It is not a way to automatically download titles over cellular data. Details are in Netflix’s Downloads for You instructions.

A downloaded file on a phone does not guarantee that a TV can receive it through wireless casting when there is no internet or network connection. Netflix says casting is limited to listed compatible devices, that mirroring may not be supported, and that AirPlay is unsupported. Since wireless receivers typically need a network path, verify the exact setup rather than relying on casting for offline viewing. A wired video connection is the more direct option when it is supported by the mobile device.
