To watch Netflix on an ultrawide monitor, connect it to a Mac, Windows PC, or Chromebook, then play Netflix in a browser supported for that computer. The monitor does not need a special Netflix app. Black bars are often normal: they preserve a title’s original shape, while zooming or stretching can crop or distort the picture.
How to watch Netflix on an ultrawide monitor
- Connect the monitor to your computer using a video connection supported by both devices, then select the matching input on the monitor.
- Open Netflix in a browser supported for your computer’s operating system. Check Netflix’s supported browsers and system requirements for current browser versions and limits.
- Sign in and start a title. If the video appears with bars, check its aspect ratio before changing display settings.
Netflix supports browser viewing on Mac, Windows, and Chromebook computers; the supported browsers and maximum playback resolution vary by platform. The limits can change, so use Netflix’s current requirements for your operating system and browser rather than assuming one browser works best on every computer. Why Netflix shows black bars on an ultrawide
Black bars can keep a title in its original format when its image is narrower or otherwise shaped differently from the monitor. They do not necessarily indicate a fault. Netflix explains this behavior in its guide to black bars on screen.

Making the picture fill the panel may require zooming or stretching. Zooming can cut off part of the image; stretching can distort it. Netflix’s cited help page documents zoom for some mobile devices, but does not establish a universal ultrawide fill-screen setting for computer browsers. A browser extension or display setting therefore cannot be relied on to make every title fill the screen correctly.

What affects Netflix picture quality and UHD
An ultrawide’s aspect ratio alone does not determine playback quality. The result depends on the computer and supported browser or app, the title’s available format, the display’s resolution and refresh rate, the connection path, the Netflix plan and playback-quality setting, and the internet connection.
Windows UHD requirements
For UHD playback on Windows, Netflix lists a supported UHD plan, playback quality set to Auto or High, a steady internet connection of at least 15 Mbps, Windows 11, a supported browser or Netflix app, qualifying graphics hardware, and a 4K 60 Hz display connected through HDCP 2.2. These conditions describe a UHD-capable setup; they do not mean an ultrawide is required or that every ultrawide supports UHD. In particular, the cited Windows requirement is for a 4K display, not simply a wide aspect ratio.
Mac UHD requirements
Netflix’s Mac guidance lists an Apple-processor or T2 Mac, macOS Big Sur 11 or later, the latest Safari, a supported plan and playback-quality setting, and a steady connection of at least 15 Mbps. For an external display, Netflix specifies UHD/4K resolution, at least 60 Hz, and an HDCP 2.2-rated video cable. Consult the current Mac computer requirements; Windows and Mac conditions are platform-specific and should not be interchanged.

Why Netflix has sound but a black picture on an external monitor
A black picture with sound can point to the input or protected video connection rather than the title’s aspect ratio. Netflix’s troubleshooting page for a black screen with sound is a useful starting point.
- Confirm the monitor is set to the input used by the computer.
- Check whether the video connection supports HDCP 2.2 when your playback setup requires it.
- If a converter or adapter is in the path, try a supported direct connection if available.
- Before buying a cable, check the computer and monitor specifications. An HDCP 2.2-compatible HDMI cable is relevant to certain protected external-display UHD configurations; it will not remove aspect-ratio bars or guarantee UHD.
If the image is distorted or stutters rather than going black, Netflix also provides video distortion and stutter troubleshooting.
