How many Netflix employees are losing their jobs?
The company said approximately 1,000 positions would be eliminated. Netflix’s 2025 filing reported about 16,000 full-time employees worldwide as of December 31, 2025, so the announced reduction is broadly consistent with management’s description of about 6% of its workforce. Both figures are approximate, and the final number can change as the restructuring is completed.

Why is Netflix cutting jobs while its business is growing?
Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters told employees that the business remained strong but needed to be more disciplined about where it prioritized people and resources while investing in future growth and high-impact areas. That is management’s stated rationale in the employee memo, not an independently verified single cause.

The decision illustrates why a profitable technology company can still reduce headcount. Hiring plans, organizational design and investment priorities are set against expected future returns, not only the latest quarter’s earnings. A company may decide that some work can be consolidated, delayed or moved toward projects it considers more important, even when total revenue and profit are rising.

What do Netflix’s latest financial results show?
In the second quarter of 2026, Netflix reported $3.4 billion in net income and $12.56 billion in revenue. Net income was up 9% year over year, while revenue increased 13%. Those results show growth at the time of the layoff announcement, but they do not guarantee that every business unit, product or investment will expand.

Netflix also issued a third-quarter forecast below Wall Street expectations. The combination of strong reported results and a weaker outlook helps explain why investors and employees can see two different signals at once: the current business is producing substantial earnings, while management is signaling tighter control over future spending and execution.
How competition fits into the decision
Coverage of the layoffs placed them amid intensifying competition for viewers’ attention. Netflix competes not only with other major streaming services but also with large social-video platforms that absorb time and advertising budgets.

That competitive pressure is context, not proof that competition alone caused the layoffs. The executive message emphasized internal prioritization and future growth, and Netflix has not attributed a specific number of eliminated jobs to any one rival or market segment.

What the announcement means for Netflix
For Netflix, the cuts represent a significant reallocation of staff rather than evidence that the company has stopped growing. Management says it plans to keep investing in future growth and high-impact work while becoming more selective about where people and resources are assigned.
For employees and job seekers, the affected functions show that the reorganization reaches core corporate, product and technical operations, not just a single content or administrative group. The clearest picture is therefore mixed: Netflix entered the announcement with billions in quarterly profit and double-digit revenue growth, but also with a forecast that missed Wall Street expectations and a management decision to reduce its workforce by approximately one-sixteenth. The company is presenting the move as disciplined preparation for its next phase, while the scale makes it a major event for Netflix employees and the wider streaming industry.
