Netflix had about 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, based on its regulatory filing. That headcount makes a reduction near 1,000 broadly consistent with the company’s stated percentage, although the final number can change as the process is completed. Which Netflix departments are affected?
The employee memo says product, technology, legal and human-resources teams will be most affected. Those are the only departments specifically identified in the available coverage; Netflix has not published a complete role-by-role list.
- Product: teams responsible for the service’s user experience and product decisions are among those most affected.
- Technology: engineering and other technology functions are included in the memo’s description.
- Legal: legal staff are named as a significantly affected group.

Why Netflix says it is cutting jobs
Sarandos and Peters said Netflix’s business is strong and growing, but that meeting its growth goals requires more focused choices about where the company puts people and resources. They said Netflix will continue investing in areas they consider high impact, including work intended to improve the service, support growth and advance innovation. The memo frames the layoffs as a prioritization decision rather than an admission that the company is in financial distress.

Reports identify the 2026 action as Netflix’s biggest reduction since 2022. The earlier cuts followed Netflix’s first subscriber loss in more than a decade and were carried out in two rounds.

Netflix’s financial position alongside the layoffs
The job cuts were announced even as Netflix reported $3.4 billion in net income and $12.56 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, figures reported by The Associated Press.
