Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Netflix is not shutting down on every old television worldwide. It is withdrawing support from specific models, embedded apps and TV-connected boxes when their hardware, operating system or security software can no longer run the required Netflix version. Confirmed examples include BT TV boxes in the U.K. after March 4, 2026, and selected Panasonic televisions and Blu-ray devices on dates listed by Panasonic. Your exact model, country and platform determine whether you are affected.
Confirmed Netflix cutoffs
Netflix documents notices that name a device and, in some cases, a future end date. Manufacturer announcements provide the model and regional detail.
| Device group | Region | Netflix cutoff | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| BT TV Box and BT Recordable TV Box | United Kingdom | After March 4, 2026 | BT says Netflix support ended on the affected BT/EE TV boxes. BT notice |
| Specified Panasonic televisions and Blu-ray recorders | Regions listed by Panasonic | From August 27, 2026 | Only the models and regional categories on Panasonic’s list are included. Panasonic model list |
| Specified Panasonic Blu-ray players and recorders | Regions listed by Panasonic | From July 23, 2025 | The earlier notice applies only to listed models and territories. Panasonic notice |
These announcements do not establish a single global shutdown for all older smart TVs, all devices from a particular brand or all U.S. subscribers. A television’s built-in app and an external player connected to that television can have different support dates.
Which devices can lose Netflix support?
Potentially affected hardware includes smart TVs running discontinued operating systems, Blu-ray players and recorders with embedded apps, cable or telecom boxes, older streaming players, mobile devices, consoles and computers. Netflix’s supported-device guidance covers these categories, but compatibility depends on whether the device can install and run the current app. Netflix supported devices

How to check your exact device
Find the model number
- Look for the label on the TV’s rear or side, or on the underside of a player.
- Open the device’s Settings, About or System Information screen.
- Check the original box, receipt or the manufacturer’s support app.
- Search the manufacturer’s support notice using the complete model number and your country.
A description such as “an older Panasonic TV” cannot confirm eligibility. Model suffixes and regional versions can change the result.
Check Netflix plan compatibility
- Open Netflix and go to the home screen.
- Press the Back button on the remote.
- Choose Get Help; on some interfaces it is at the bottom of the left-hand menu.
- Select Plan Compatibility.
This check addresses compatibility with Netflix’s ad-supported experience, not a permanent guarantee of future support. If Plan Compatibility is absent, Netflix says the device cannot be used with that ad-supported experience. Netflix plan-compatibility guidance

Interpret Netflix’s warning
Messages can say Netflix is no longer available, will stop working after a specified date, or that the current plan is incompatible with an older app. An unsupported-app message generally means the installed app is too old or the device cannot run the required version. Why Netflix ends support
Netflix must maintain an app that meets current operating-system, security, digital-rights-management and content-protection requirements. A manufacturer may also stop firmware updates, or the hardware may lack the processing, storage or platform runtime needed by newer releases. Netflix says some devices cannot support its ad-supported experience because the app or operating system cannot be updated far enough to support advertising. That limitation is not automatically a loss of every Netflix plan. Netflix ad-supported compatibility

Do you need a new television?
Usually not. If the screen and at least one HDMI input work, Netflix recommends connecting a supported streaming stick, TV box or game console. Netflix HDMI-device guidance
- Confirm the TV accepts the player’s HDMI output and has compatible HDCP support.
- Very old sets may need an HDMI-to-DVI or other adapter; video, audio or copy-protection problems can result.
- An external player cannot repair a failed panel, power supply or HDMI system.
- The external device has its own app-support life and is not permanently future-proof.
Choosing a workaround
| Option | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Update the built-in app or firmware | The device remains on the manufacturer’s supported list. | Older platforms may have no compatible update, and plan support can differ. |
| External streaming player | A functioning TV with HDMI. | Adds a remote, power cable and dependence on Wi-Fi or Ethernet. |
| Existing game console | A household already owns a supported PlayStation or Xbox. | Higher power use and a less television-focused interface; old consoles can also lose support. PlayStation Xbox |
| Phone or tablet casting | Occasional viewing with a compatible receiver. | Device-specific, not guaranteed, and inconvenient when the phone is needed elsewhere. |
| Replace the TV | The display, ports or smart platform are also failing or obsolete. | Costs far more than adding a player when the panel is still satisfactory. |
External-player categories
- Roku players offer a dedicated remote and simple interface; availability and support vary by country and generation.
- Amazon Fire TV integrates with Alexa and Amazon services; interface and availability differ by market.
- Google TV devices provide Google voice search and apps. Do not assume their casting behavior matches an older Chromecast.
- Apple TV 4K suits Apple households but can be excessive if Netflix is the only requirement.
Before buying, verify HDMI and HDCP compatibility, current Netflix support, Wi-Fi or Ethernet options, resolution and HDR needs, remote usability, regional availability, power requirements and support for your Netflix plan. No current price or model is universal across markets.

Casting is conditional
Netflix supports casting only on listed receiving devices and configurations. A missing Cast button can mean that the receiver is unsupported, unavailable on the network or not discoverable. Netflix casting guidance Missing Cast button troubleshooting

Mobile and computer limitations
Android phones and tablets have separate requirements for the latest app and older app versions. A device that opens Netflix may still lack HD, HDR, downloads, casting or newer plan features. Netflix Android requirements
Computers running Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 cannot normally update through Microsoft to a Netflix-compatible supported environment. Netflix computer and TV-device troubleshooting
When Netflix fails even though the device is not cut off
Do not classify every playback error as an end-of-support decision. Check these possibilities:
- Netflix app or device firmware is out of date.
- The device is uncertified or has a digital-rights-management failure.
- Wi-Fi, DNS, router or account problems interrupt playback.
- The device date and time are incorrect.
- The HDMI cable, input, resolution or HDCP handshake is failing.
- The selected Netflix plan is incompatible while another plan may still work.
For a black screen from a streaming stick, select the correct HDMI input, verify the player’s power supply, try another cable or port, and check whether the TV accepts the player’s output resolution and HDCP level. General TV-connected-device troubleshooting is available from Netflix. Netflix troubleshooting
Regional and date caveat
A U.K. BT notice does not establish a U.S. cutoff, and a Panasonic list for one region does not automatically apply elsewhere. Check the manufacturer’s model table and Netflix account or device notice for your country before purchasing hardware. Support lists and dates can change; verify the exact model and region immediately before replacing anything.
