If Netflix is silent through your soundbar, check the audio output selected on the device running Netflix, the soundbar’s input, and the connections between them. If sound works but surround sound is missing, troubleshoot that separately: 5.1 depends on the playback device, sound system, title, and available audio track.
First, identify what is going wrong
Separate the symptom before changing settings. Netflix may be completely silent, playing through the TV instead of the soundbar, missing 5.1 surround sound, or producing distorted or noisy audio. These point to different checks; missing 5.1 does not mean there is no audio.

- No sound: Check the active output, sound-system settings, and connections.
- Sound from the TV but not the soundbar: Check which output the TV or streaming device is using and whether the soundbar is connected to the selected input.
- Sound works, but surround is missing: Check title and audio-track availability, then the device’s audio output format.
- Distorted or noisy sound: Check whether the audio format is compatible with the playback path.

If Netflix has no sound through the system
- Check the device running Netflix. On the TV or external streaming device, confirm that audio is directed to the sound system or the intended output. Also check the device’s audio-output setting.
- Check the soundbar and connections. Confirm the soundbar is on, set to the input connected to the TV or playback device, and that the HDMI or optical connectors are firmly seated. Check the corresponding audio settings on the TV or other device.
- Restart the affected playback device. Netflix includes restarting among its troubleshooting steps.
- Isolate the connection path if practical. If audio passes through a receiver or sound system, temporarily bypass it and test the playback path directly. If the problem changes, that comparison can help narrow down which part of the path needs attention; it does not by itself prove a particular component is faulty.
- Try another cable or input as a test. Netflix recommends trying another cable when checking a potentially problematic connection. This is a diagnostic step, not evidence that every sound problem needs a replacement cable. Check the device manuals before buying a cable or choosing its specifications.
- Compare Netflix with another app, or Netflix on another device, if available. Whether the symptom changes can help narrow the issue, but it does not prove the cause.

If sound works but 5.1 surround sound does not
Surround sound requires support across the playback device and sound system, plus a title and audio track that offer the format. Netflix says not every title or language has 5.1, and downloaded content does not support the feature.
- Check the title details. Look for a 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus indicator. Availability can vary by title, episode, season, and language. Netflix explains how to check for 5.1 audio.
- Choose the surround track during playback. If a 5.1 option appears in the audio and subtitles menu, select it; a stereo track will not provide 5.1.
- Check the playback device’s output format. An output limited to stereo or Linear PCM may prevent 5.1 playback. Netflix advises selecting an output compatible with 5.1 when surround sound is the goal. The exact menu path and available formats depend on the device.
- Confirm the whole playback chain supports 5.1. The streaming device and the connected audio equipment must support the format. A title indicator alone does not establish that every device in the path can play it.
If Netflix audio is distorted, static, or hissing
Format compatibility can be one cause, but the right setting depends on the specific equipment path. In its guidance for a Roku connected through an A/V receiver, Netflix says the receiver needs Dolby Digital Plus compatibility to decode and play 5.1; if it does not support that format, Netflix suggests selecting stereo. When to contact the manufacturer
If the basic output, title-format, and connection checks do not resolve the issue, consult the support instructions for the specific TV, soundbar, or streaming device. The correct settings depend on the models and how they are connected; there is no single HDMI ARC, eARC, or optical instruction that applies to every system. Netflix also directs users to device manufacturers for model-specific assistance.
