Netflix Error Code NW-4-8: Meaning and Fixes for TVs, PlayStation, and Xbox

Netflix error NW-4-8 means the app cannot use the device data or network connection it needs, or that the device no longer meets Netflix’s current technical requirements. It is a device-and-connection error, not a problem with one particular film or series.

Check the device’s Netflix SDK version first. On the error screen, choose More Details > Device. SDK 4.1.5 or lower indicates a device that Netflix says cannot be updated to a supported version by its manufacturer; SDK 4.1.6 or higher means you should continue with the connection and software troubleshooting below.

What NW-4-8 means

Netflix’s official message is: “Couldn’t connect to Netflix. Please try again or restart your home network and streaming device. Code: nw-4-8.” Netflix attributes the error to one of three conditions: damaged or incompatible data on the device, a network connection that is preventing Netflix from working, or a device that is no longer supported.

The most useful first distinction is scope. If only one television, streaming box, or console shows NW-4-8 while other devices stream normally, start with that device’s support version and local settings. If several devices on the same home network fail, investigate the modem, router, internet service, or shared DNS and proxy settings first. This is troubleshooting logic based on the branches Netflix documents, not a published failure-rate statistic.

Check whether the device is still supported

Find the SDK version

  1. Leave the NW-4-8 message on screen.
  2. Select More Details.
  3. Open Device and note the SDK or platform version.
SDK result What it means Next action
4.1.5 or below Netflix says the device or app software does not meet its latest technical requirements and the manufacturer cannot update it to a supported version. Use a different Netflix-supported television, streaming device, or game console.
4.1.6 or above The version clears Netflix’s documented support cutoff. Continue with sign-out, restart, network, and settings checks.

Do not spend hours changing router settings when the SDK is 4.1.5 or lower. Netflix’s documented remedy for that branch is another supported device. A newer television or console may still have a separate network problem, so support status is a necessary check rather than a guarantee that playback will work.

Use this decision path before changing settings

What you observe Most useful first check
NW-4-8 appears on one device only Inspect its SDK version, sign out of Netflix, restart the device, and review that device’s network settings.
Several devices on the same Wi-Fi or wired network fail Restart the modem and router, then check for an ISP outage or shared network configuration problem.
Wi-Fi devices fail but a wired device works Concentrate on wireless signal, router placement, interference, and Wi-Fi configuration.
A device on Ethernet and devices on Wi-Fi all fail Prioritize the modem, router, DNS/proxy configuration, or internet service rather than one television.
SDK is 4.1.5 or lower Replace the unsupported device with one Netflix supports; resets cannot add missing platform support.

Fix NW-4-8 on a TV or streaming device

1. Sign out and sign back in

Open Netflix’s account or help menu and choose its sign-out option, then authenticate again. Signing out refreshes the account session and removes stale app credentials without changing your Netflix subscription or profiles.

If the usual menu will not open, Netflix provides a remote-button sequence that exposes sign-out or reset options. The exact sequence depends on the device and remote, so use Netflix’s documented sequence for your model rather than guessing button combinations. After signing in again, try the same title that produced the error.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

2. Restart the streaming device completely

  1. Turn off the television or streaming device.
  2. Unplug its power cable.
  3. Press the device’s physical power button once.
  4. Wait one minute. Netflix also specifies that leaving it unplugged for three minutes is an acceptable longer reset.
  5. Reconnect power, turn the device on, and open Netflix.

A remote-control standby command may not remove temporary state from the device. Disconnecting power and pressing the physical button discharges that state before the restart.

3. Restart the home network

  1. Power off the TV or streaming device.
  2. Unplug the modem and router from power.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the modem and router.
  5. Wait for their indicator lights to settle and for the internet connection to return.
  6. Restart the streaming device and test Netflix.

Keep the streaming device off while the modem and router reconnect. Otherwise, it can attempt to reconnect before the network has received an internet address.

4. Return connection settings to their defaults

Custom network settings can prevent Netflix from reaching its service even when general web browsing appears to work. While troubleshooting, restore the device and home network to ordinary automatic settings where your equipment allows it.

5. Improve the Wi-Fi path

If the device uses Wi-Fi, reduce the chance that a weak or noisy signal is causing the connection failure.

  • Move the router and streaming device closer together.
  • Place the router in an open position, elevated and off the floor.
  • Separate it from other wireless equipment and sources of interference.
  • After moving either device, reconnect to Wi-Fi and test Netflix again.

These changes address the radio link only. If every device fails, moving one television will not fix an outage or a modem configuration problem.

6. Test the service and contact the ISP when needed

If NW-4-8 remains after the preceding steps, run a speed test at fast.com from a device on the same connection. The test does not prove that bandwidth is the sole cause, but it gives the internet provider evidence about whether the connection is reachable and stable.

Tell the ISP:

  • Whether the error affects one device or several.
  • Whether affected devices use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both.
  • Whether other internet services also fail.
  • That you restarted the modem and router and returned VPN, proxy, and DNS settings to default.
  • The modem and router indicator-light status when the failure occurs.

Ask the ISP to check for an outage, a modem or router fault, and incorrect network settings. If the provider identifies a line or equipment problem, retest Netflix after service is restored rather than repeating app resets.

PlayStation-specific instructions

PlayStation 4

  1. Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
  2. Choose the connection type and select Custom.
  3. Set IP Address Settings to Automatic.
  4. Set DHCP Host Name to Do Not Specify.
  5. Set DNS Settings to Automatic.
  6. Set Proxy Server to Do Not Use.
  7. Set MTU Settings to Automatic, then test the connection.

These values remove custom addressing, DNS, proxy, and packet-size choices while you test. If you intentionally use a managed network with fixed values, keep a record of them and ask the network administrator before replacing them.

  3. Use Automatic for IP address.
  4. Set DHCP host name to Do Not Specify.
  5. Use Automatic DNS.
  6. Use no proxy, select OK, and run the connection test.

After the test succeeds, launch Netflix. If the console connects but only Netflix reports NW-4-8, continue with the sign-out and full power-restart steps rather than repeatedly editing network values.

Xbox-specific instructions

Xbox 360

  1. Press the Guide button.
  2. Open Settings > System Settings > Network Settings.
  3. Select the active network and choose Configure Network.
  4. Open DNS Settings and choose Automatic.
  5. Restart the console and test Netflix.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

  1. Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
  2. Choose Advanced settings.
  3. Open DNS settings.
  4. Select Automatic.
  5. Restart the console, then open Netflix.

Changing DNS to automatic is a troubleshooting step, not a requirement to use a particular DNS provider. If the error affects multiple devices, make the equivalent check on the router as well; changing only the console will not correct a shared network fault.

Common mistakes that prolong the error

  • Skipping the SDK check: An unsupported device cannot be made compatible by reinstalling the app or rebooting the router.
  • Restarting only the TV: A modem or router that has been running with a bad session may continue serving the same failed connection.
  • Leaving a VPN, proxy, or custom DNS active: These settings can alter the route or name resolution Netflix expects.
  • Changing several settings at once: Record each change and test after a complete step so you know which adjustment mattered.
  • Assuming a speed result settles the issue: A fast test does not rule out DNS, proxy, device-support, or authentication problems.
  • Ignoring the one-device versus whole-network pattern: Scope tells you whether to focus on the device or the shared network.

When replacing the device is the correct fix

If the Device screen reports SDK 4.1.5 or below, Netflix’s stated position is that the manufacturer cannot update that platform to its current technical requirements. In that case, use another device that Netflix supports. A supported streaming stick, television app, or game console can serve as the replacement, but the particular model and availability depend on your region and hardware choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the SDK is 4.1.6 or above, replacement is not the documented first response. Complete the sign-out, power, network, default-settings, and Wi-Fi checks, then involve the ISP if the failure persists.

What to report when escalation is necessary

Good escalation notes prevent the same basic checks from being repeated. Write down the device model, SDK version, platform (TV, streaming device, PlayStation, or Xbox), connection type, number of affected devices, and the time the problem started. Include whether a wired connection was tested, the result from fast.com, and whether VPN, proxy, and custom DNS settings were disabled.

Netflix’s guidance does not publish an occurrence rate or a success percentage for these fixes. The measurable threshold it gives is the SDK cutoff: 4.1.5 or lower is unsupported, while 4.1.6 or higher proceeds to troubleshooting. Treat any other outcome as a diagnosis based on your device and network symptoms, not as a guaranteed statistic.
