Netflix downloads usually fail for one of five reasons: the title is not licensed for downloading, the app or operating system is out of date, storage or permissions are blocking the save, a profile restriction is hiding the title, or the device does not support Netflix downloads. The current Netflix app for Windows computers does not support downloads at all. Start by testing a different title; if that title has no Download icon either, continue with the fixes for your device below.
Identify the failure before changing anything
The symptom determines the safest first step. Updating an app normally preserves downloads, while clearing app data or uninstalling Netflix removes them. Use this table to choose a path.

| What you see | Most likely explanation | First action | Download risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Download icon beside one title | The title cannot be downloaded | Try another movie or episode | No data is changed |
| No Download icon beside many titles on Android, iPhone, iPad, or Fire tablet | Out-of-date app or operating system, unsupported device, profile restriction, or storage problem | Update Netflix and the device software | Updates normally leave saved downloads in place |
| “Download Failed” | An app, storage, permission, or device-state problem | Open Downloads, select the alert icon, and use the displayed error code | Existing downloads remain unless you delete them or reset the app |
| Downloads disappeared | Profile maturity settings, SD-card trouble, or a cleaner app deleting Netflix data | Check the active profile, SD card, and cleaner settings | Resetting app data or reinstalling deletes all saved downloads |
| Windows Netflix has no download control | The current Windows app does not offer downloads | Use a supported mobile, Fire tablet, or Chromebook device | No Windows setting can restore the feature |
| “This title can no longer be watched offline. (AVF:11800;OS:42800;)” | Netflix needs to refresh information for that download | Delete the affected download and download it again | Only the affected download is removed |
First check whether Netflix allows that title to download
Netflix does not make every movie or show available offline. If you can download some titles but not others, or the Download icon is missing only beside a particular title, the restriction is catalog or licensing related rather than a fault with your phone or tablet. Search for another title and test its Download icon before changing permissions, deleting data, or reinstalling the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen only one title is affected, there is no device setting that can add the missing option. A title can also become unavailable for offline viewing after it has already been saved; in that case Netflix displays an offline-playback message and requires a fresh download.

Fix Netflix downloads on Android
1. Update Netflix and Android
- Open Google Play, search for Netflix, and install the latest available update.
- Open your phone or tablet’s Settings and use its system-update section to install the latest Android update offered for that device.
- Restart Netflix and test a title that normally has a Download icon.
Netflix recommends the latest app and operating system, and some Android devices are not compatible with downloads. If your device cannot install a current Android release or the Netflix app identifies it as incompatible, downloading may remain unavailable even though streaming works.
2. Check Storage permission on Android 10 or earlier
On Android 10 or earlier, Netflix documents enabling Storage permission for downloads. Open Settings, go to Apps (or Applications), select Netflix, open Permissions, and allow Storage. Menu names differ by manufacturer. Return to Netflix and try the download again.
3. Check the active profile and storage location
- Switch to the profile that originally saved the download and check whether its maturity restrictions have changed. Profile maturity settings can make titles disappear from the downloadable library.
- If Netflix is configured to use an SD card, confirm that the card is inserted, recognized by Android, and has available space. A failing, removed, or incompatible card can make saved downloads vanish.
- Temporarily disable or exclude Netflix from any cleaner app that automatically deletes cached files or app data. Such cleaners can remove downloads even when Netflix itself is working.
An SD card can help only when the card and Netflix’s storage settings are the problem. It cannot make an unavailable title downloadable, bypass a profile restriction, add downloads to Windows, or correct an unrelated Netflix error code.

4. Clear Netflix app data only as a last resort
Clearing app data is a complete reset, not a harmless cache cleanup. Netflix warns that it removes every downloaded show and movie and signs you out. If you choose it, record your sign-in details first, then open Settings, Apps, Netflix, Storage (or Storage and cache), and choose Clear storage or Clear data. Sign in again, set the storage location, and download a test title.
Fix Netflix downloads on iPhone and iPad
1. Update both the app and iOS or iPadOS
- Open the App Store, select your account, and install any available Netflix update.
- Open Settings, choose General, then Software Update, and install the current iOS or iPadOS version offered for your device.
- Open Netflix and test a downloadable title.
Keeping only one of the two components current can leave download failures unresolved, so update both before deleting anything.

- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
2. Use the error details for “Download Failed”
Open Netflix’s Downloads area and tap the alert icon beside the failed item. Follow the help path associated with the exact error code shown there. Netflix specifically directs users to its error-code instructions and recommends updating the app. The code is more useful than the generic “Download Failed” wording because different codes point to different recovery actions.
3. Reinstall only after protecting your downloads
Reinstalling Netflix can correct damaged app state, but uninstalling removes all saved downloads and signs you out. Before choosing this step, make sure you know your Netflix sign-in details and understand that every offline copy must be downloaded again. Delete the app, reinstall it from the App Store, sign in, and test one title before rebuilding your library.
4. Resolve AVF:11800;OS:42800
If Netflix says, “This title can no longer be watched offline. (AVF:11800;OS:42800;),” Netflix’s documented fix is specific: delete the affected download and download the title again. This refreshes the device information associated with that offline copy. You do not need to reset the entire app for this code.
5. Download a whole season when appropriate
On 29 January 2025, About Netflix announced a Season Download button for all iPhone and iPad users. The button downloads every episode in a season with one tap; Android users already had this feature. If the control is absent, update Netflix and iOS or iPadOS first, then check whether the season and device meet Netflix’s current availability rules.
Fix Netflix downloads on Amazon Fire tablets
Netflix requires Fire OS 7 or later for downloads. Open the Amazon Appstore and update Netflix, then open the tablet’s Settings and install the latest Fire OS update available. Restart Netflix and test a title with a Download icon. A Fire tablet running an older Fire OS version may continue to stream while lacking download support; updating the app alone cannot change that operating-system requirement.

Why Netflix downloads do not work on Windows
The current Netflix app for devices that use Windows does not provide a download feature. Netflix’s current help guidance lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store as alternatives. The newer Windows app replaced the old one, and Netflix says there is no way to return to the previous app version to regain downloads.
Consequently, reinstalling the Windows app, clearing its cache, changing Windows permissions, or switching Netflix profiles will not add an offline-download button. Use one of the supported device categories when you need to watch without an internet connection. A Chromebook must be a model that supports the Google Play Store.
When downloads disappear from the library
Profile maturity restrictions
A profile’s maturity setting can prevent a title from appearing in that profile’s available downloads. Check that you are using the intended profile and that its maturity restrictions have not been changed. A title missing from one profile but visible in another points to profile settings rather than a damaged device.
SD-card state on Android
If downloads were stored on an SD card, power down the device if necessary, reseat the card, and confirm Android recognizes it. Netflix may no longer see downloads when the card is removed, fails, or is replaced. Do not format the card while trying to recover downloads unless you accept that formatting will erase its contents.
Cleaner and storage-management apps
Some cleaner apps remove Netflix data as part of an automatic cleanup. Review the cleaner’s history and exclusions, then stop it from deleting Netflix files. Re-download only after the cleaner is no longer removing the app’s stored data.

Clearing Netflix data on Android and uninstalling Netflix on iPhone or iPad both delete saved downloads and sign you out. These actions can repair corrupted app state, but they cannot preserve the offline library. Treat them as final recovery steps.
Quick Recap
A safe order of operations
- Try a different title to distinguish a catalog restriction from a device problem.
- Confirm that your platform supports downloads: Android, iPhone, iPad, Fire OS 7 or later, or a Chromebook with Google Play Store. Windows computers are not supported for downloads in the current app.
- Update Netflix and the device operating system.
- Check Android Storage permission when using Android 10 or earlier.
- Check the active profile’s maturity restrictions, SD-card status, and cleaner-app exclusions.
- For “Download Failed,” open Downloads, tap the alert icon, and follow the instructions for the exact code.
- For AVF:11800;OS:42800, delete that download and download it again.
- Only then consider clearing Android app data or reinstalling on iPhone or iPad, after accepting that all downloads will be deleted and you will be signed out.
