NetBSD is not officially an “AI-free operating system,” but its contributor rules give it a distinctive place in the debate over AI-generated software. The project’s commit guidelines presume code generated by a large language model (LLM) or similar tool is tainted and forbid committing it without prior written approval from NetBSD core. That makes NetBSD a plausible choice for contributors who want a published barrier against unapproved AI-generated code—provided the policy’s limits are understood.
What NetBSD actually restricts
The relevant rule appears in the NetBSD Commit Guidelines under “Do not commit tainted code to the repository.” It states: “Code generated by a large language model or similar technology, such as GitHub/Microsoft’s Copilot, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, or Facebook/Meta’s Code Llama, is presumed to be tainted code, and must not be committed without prior written approval by core.” The guideline is published by the NetBSD Project at NetBSD Commit Guidelines.

That wording creates a presumption and an approval process, not an unconditional ban. A contributor who wants to submit LLM-generated code must obtain written approval from core before committing it. The page does not name an individual policy author or provide an adoption date, so neither should be inferred.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the distinction matters
- Generated code: The text specifically addresses code generated by an LLM or similar technology.
- Approval: The restriction can be overridden through prior written approval by core.
- Repository scope: The rule controls commits to NetBSD’s source repository, rather than every line of software that can run on a NetBSD machine.
The same guidelines ask committers to check licensing, distribution rights, authorship and copying when submitting code they did not write themselves. Those checks explain why generated code is treated as a provenance and legal-risk issue, not merely as a question of developer preference.

Why this can appeal to anti-slop and AI-skeptical developers
Many open-source projects discuss acceptable AI use informally, while NetBSD puts a concrete condition in its public contribution rules. A contributor can therefore point to a documented standard: unapproved LLM-generated code is not acceptable for a repository commit. That is useful to maintainers concerned about unverifiable origins, license conflicts, accidental copying, security defects or code that no contributor can properly explain.
Calling NetBSD an “AI-free FOSS OS” is still shorthand. The evidence supports a narrower description: NetBSD restricts LLM-generated code contributions and requires written core approval for an exception. The rule does not establish that every line in the tree has never passed through an AI tool, nor does it prove that approved generated code is absent.
What the policy does not guarantee
It does not certify the entire installed system
NetBSD’s rule applies to commits in the NetBSD source repository. It does not certify packages, ports, downstream rebuilds, vendor additions or third-party applications as AI-free. A user can install software from outside the core project, and that software may have its own development history and policies.

It does not remove AI features from applications
The guideline concerns how code enters the repository. It does not prevent a user from running an application with an AI feature, connecting to an AI service or compiling unrelated software on NetBSD.
It is not an absolute prohibition
Because core can grant prior written approval, the strongest defensible claim is “AI-generated contributions are restricted unless approved,” not “AI-generated contributions can never enter NetBSD.” Readers who require an absolute ban should treat the approval clause as decisive.
NetBSD in context
NetBSD describes itself as an entirely free and open-source UNIX-like operating system, originally released in 1993 and developed by an international community. Its project overview highlights portability, broad hardware support, package management, security features, storage and virtualization. The overview is available at About NetBSD.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
That long-standing portability focus is relevant to the policy discussion. NetBSD is an established operating-system project with a formal source repository and contribution process, not a new distribution created solely around an anti-AI slogan. The AI-related rule is one part of its broader development governance.

- “NetBSD requires prior written core approval before LLM-generated code may be committed.”
- “NetBSD’s repository policy places a taint presumption on code generated by LLMs or similar tools.”
- “NetBSD may suit contributors seeking an explicit limit on unapproved AI-generated contributions.”
Avoid saying that NetBSD guarantees an AI-free source tree, that every package is AI-free or that the project has announced an “AI-free OS” strategy. Those claims go beyond the published rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for prospective contributors
- Read the complete commit guidelines before preparing a patch.
- Determine whether an LLM or similar system generated any code in the proposed commit.
- If it did, do not commit it without prior written approval from NetBSD core.
- Be prepared to verify licensing, authorship, copying and distribution rights for code you did not write yourself.
- Keep the scope clear: approval concerns the contribution to NetBSD’s repository, not software you may later install from elsewhere.
NetBSD’s policy therefore offers a meaningful signal rather than a purity certificate. It gives AI-skeptical developers a published rule they can inspect and a human approval gate they can discuss with maintainers. Whether that is enough depends on how strictly a reader defines “AI-free.”
