Oracle describes it as a first-party, fully managed OCI service that brings NetApp ONTAP data-management capabilities natively to Oracle’s cloud. It is not available yet. Oracle says general availability (GA) is planned “within the next 12 months,” and the announcement gives no launch date, regions or pricing. The “native beats bolted-on” framing is an editorial reading of the model. Nothing published so far shows it is faster, cheaper or safer than alternatives.
What was announced
Oracle’s official announcement says the service is meant to help enterprises migrate, run, protect and modernize workloads while keeping familiar storage operations. “Planned” and “designed to” are the operative words. This is a statement of intent, not a launch.

Oracle’s product blog presents it as an addition to OCI’s existing storage line-up: Block Volume, File Storage, Object Storage and File Storage with Lustre. It is aimed at customers who want ONTAP-style operations, data protection policies and disaster recovery workflows as they move to OCI.

What “native” means here
“Native” in this announcement means first-party and managed inside OCI, not a customer-deployed ONTAP appliance or a third-party marketplace image. Oracle says customers will be able to manage the service through the OCI Console and SDKs, through ONTAP APIs, and through familiar workflows. The blog also describes integrated procurement and support from Oracle.
#1 Best Overall
- Genuine Original Part
- This is a replacement part only.
- Replacement parts often have to be installed by a qualified technician.
- Customers are responsible to ensure that they are ordering the correct part
- Misc
The vendors’ rationale is continuity: move ONTAP-based workloads with less application redesign and fewer changes to storage management. These are stated goals. No migration outcomes have been measured or published.
Workloads named
- Databases, including Oracle Database
- Enterprise applications
- Virtualized environments, including VMware and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution
- Electronic design automation and high-performance computing (EDA/HPC)
- Regulated applications and industries
- AI and analytics data pipelines
- Test/development, hybrid cloud and disaster recovery
Oracle says it expects the service to be a certified datastore for Oracle Cloud VMware Solution at GA. That is a future expectation, not a current certification.
Capabilities Oracle describes
These come from Oracle’s blog and describe intended capabilities. They are not confirmed service-level features.

| Area | What Oracle describes |
|---|---|
| Access | Multiprotocol access; ONTAP protocols listed as NFS, SMB, NVMe/TCP, iSCSI and S3 |
| Copies and cloning | Snapshots and clones (FlexClone) |
| Replication and DR | Storage-native replication (SnapMirror); FlexCache for data access across locations |
| Data protection | Application-consistent protection (SnapCenter) |
| Compliance | WORM retention (SnapLock) |
| Cost and mobility | Cold-data tiering; hybrid and multicloud data mobility |
The blog presents these as ONTAP capabilities. Don’t assume every protocol, feature or configuration will be supported at launch until Oracle’s service documentation says so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not established
- Availability: only the “within the next 12 months” window from September 29, 2026. No date.
- Regions and pricing: not stated in the announcement or the blog, including egress and procurement terms.
- Performance and availability commitments: no figures, benchmarks or customer results were published.
- Comparative claims: nothing shows it beats OCI’s own storage services or third-party ONTAP deployments on speed, cost, security or ease of operation.
Independent trade coverage from ITPro on September 30, 2026 framed the deal as NetApp adding another hyperscaler to its footprint.
Executive rationale
NetApp’s Pravjit Tiwana, SVP and GM of Cloud Storage and Services, said: “Customers want the flexibility to move AI and enterprise workloads to the cloud without giving up operational simplicity, data management, and reliability.” Oracle’s Konstantinos (kp) Papamiltiadis, SVP of Partnerships at OCI, said: “Enterprises shouldn’t have to rebuild their data infrastructure to move to the cloud.” Both are company positions, not customer evidence.
Quick Recap
What existing NetApp customers should check at GA
- Whether the protocols and ONTAP features you depend on are supported.
- Regions, including those close to your Oracle Database or VMware footprint.
- Published performance and availability commitments.
- How replication and DR work with your current on-premises or other-cloud ONTAP systems.
- Pricing, egress and the split of management responsibilities.
- Certification status for Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, if you run VMware.
