Vertuo capsule sizes are names for intended drink volumes. Depending on the format, a capsule is designed to produce 25 ml (Ristretto), 40 ml (Espresso), 80 ml (Double Espresso), 150 ml (Gran Lungo), 230 ml (Mug), 355 ml (XL or Alto/Cold Brew Style), or 535 ml (Carafe). These are Nespresso’s published product outputs, not independent taste or performance measurements.
Choose the format by the drink you want first, then check that your exact Vertuo machine and cup support it. Vertuo capsules work only in Vertuo machines, and the machine reads each capsule’s barcode to set its extraction parameters.

Vertuo capsule sizes at a glance
The size printed or associated with a Vertuo capsule indicates its standard intended output. It is not simply the physical size of the plastic pod. The capsule contains a portion formulated for that serving format, while the machine controls water volume and extraction automatically.

The 25 ml, 40 ml, 80 ml, 150 ml, 230 ml, 355 ml and 535 ml figures come from Nespresso’s published product guidance, including the Vertuo Pop manual dated 23 June 2025. Actual liquid in your cup can differ if you program a different volume, stop the extraction early, or use a machine with model-specific settings.

What the capsule label actually means
It is an intended serving size, not a promise of identical output in every use
Nespresso portions each Vertuo capsule for its intended format. The standard size is the machine’s default cup length, not a fixed quantity that cannot be changed. The Vertuo Pop manual says users can program a different volume for a capsule type. A customized setting therefore overrides the standard target for that machine.
Nespresso describes the system this way in the Vertuo Pop preparation instructions: “The machine will automatically recognize the inserted capsule and select the coffee preparation parameters and cup length defined by Nespresso coffee experts to extract the coffee blends at it’s best.” The wording, including the apostrophe in “it’s,” is reproduced from the manufacturer’s manual.
Barcode recognition controls the brew
Every Vertuo capsule has a barcode that the machine reads. Nespresso UK says the barcode lets the machine adjust brewing parameters such as temperature, crema, flow, rotation speed and water-to-coffee contact time. This is why changing from an Espresso capsule to a Mug capsule is more than adding water to the same recipe: the machine selects a different programmed extraction.

Which Vertuo capsule makes a mug?
Choose the Mug format for the standard 230 ml coffee serving. It is the clearest match for a conventional larger coffee cup. If 230 ml is too little, the 355 ml XL format (called Alto or Cold Brew Style in the Vertuo Pop manual) is the next larger published option. If you want less than a mug but more than an espresso, Gran Lungo at 150 ml sits between those formats.
Do not treat “mug” as a universal cup-size guarantee. A large household mug may hold considerably more than 230 ml, and the finished drink will not fill it to the rim. Measure your preferred cup once with water if capacity matters, and check whether the machine’s cup platform accommodates its height and diameter.

The practical difference is output and intended serving style. Coffee strength and flavor depend on the particular blend, roast and preparation, so the format name alone cannot rank one category as better.

Understanding the 355 ml and 535 ml formats
XL, Alto and Cold Brew Style are naming variations around 355 ml
Nespresso UK’s capsule catalogue calls the 355 ml size XL. The Vertuo Pop manual labels the same 355 ml capacity as Alto/Cold Brew Style. Preserve the name used for your market and machine rather than assuming that every retailer uses the same label. The volume is the common reference in the supplied manufacturer documentation.

Because 355 ml is substantially larger than the 230 ml Mug format, confirm that your machine supports it before purchasing a sleeve. The machine support statement is model- and region-specific, and a capsule that physically fits the opening is not automatically enabled by every Vertuo model.
Carafe is a 535 ml format, not simply a larger mug
Carafe is the largest listed Vertuo output at 535 ml. It is intended for a carafe-sized serving and needs a vessel that can safely receive that volume. A machine may accept smaller formats while lacking Carafe support, so check the exact model documentation rather than relying on the capsule’s appearance.
Do Vertuo capsules fit all Nespresso machines?
No. Nespresso states that Vertuo capsules are compatible only with Vertuo machines. They are not interchangeable with Nespresso Original capsules or Original-system machines. The two systems use different capsule designs and brewing controls.

Within the Vertuo family, compatibility still varies. Nespresso UK’s support information identifies Vertuo Creatista, Lattissima, Next, POP and POP+ as supporting XL and Carafe capsules. This is a current UK statement; older machines, differently named regional versions and future revisions may have different support. Check the model name printed on your machine and the support information for the country where it was sold.

Capsule support and cup support are separate checks
A machine can support a capsule format while your chosen cup or accessory does not fit safely underneath it. The Vertuo Pop manual’s accessory table marks Ristretto, Espresso, Double Espresso, Gran Lungo, Mug (S) and Mug (M), plus the Reveal Glass, as suitable accessories. It marks Mug (L) and Carafe as not suitable in that table.
That table applies to the Vertuo Pop guidance and should not be generalized to every Vertuo model. Before brewing a large format, check both the capsule compatibility list and the machine’s cup-platform or accessory instructions. Never balance a vessel on an unstable surface to make a larger cup fit.
How to choose a capsule size
- Measure the drink you actually want. Select 40 ml for an espresso-format serving, 80 ml for a double, 150 ml for an in-between long coffee, 230 ml for a standard mug, 355 ml for a large format, or 535 ml for a carafe-sized serving. If you prefer a very short coffee, look for the 25 ml Ristretto format where it is offered.
- Check the exact machine model. Use the model label on the machine and the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Pay particular attention to XL/Alto and Carafe support.
- Check your cup or glass. Confirm height, diameter and the accessory table for your model. A capsule’s published output is not evidence that any large mug or carafe will fit.
- Choose the coffee profile within that format. Nespresso’s catalogue includes permanent coffees, limited editions, seasonal flavors and decaf choices. On the UK capsule page, decaf options are listed in Espresso, Double Espresso and Mug formats.
- Review the programmed volume if your machine was customized. If a previous user changed the cup-length setting, restore the standard setting or program the volume you want. The capsule’s printed format remains its intended default, but the machine can be set differently.
Vertuo capsule “types” beyond size
Format type
Ristretto, Espresso, Double Espresso, Gran Lungo, Mug, XL/Alto and Carafe are format categories defined primarily by intended output. They are the first filter when shopping because they determine how much coffee the machine is programmed to make.
Coffee and availability type
Within a format, the catalogue may offer permanent blends, limited editions, seasonal flavors and decaffeinated coffees. Availability changes over time and differs by market. A format can therefore remain available while a particular flavor or decaf listing is discontinued or replaced.

Preparation-style wording
“Cold Brew Style” in the Vertuo Pop manual is part of the manufacturer’s naming for the 355 ml category. It should not be read as proof that every capsule in that size is prepared by a separate cold-brew process. Follow the preparation instructions for the specific capsule and machine.
Why two capsules with different sizes can taste different
The larger output is not created by simply diluting a smaller capsule. Nespresso says the barcode selects multiple extraction variables, including temperature, flow, rotation speed, crema and contact time. The coffee portion and recipe are matched to the intended serving format.
That does not establish a universal taste hierarchy. An 80 ml Double Espresso is not automatically better or stronger than a 150 ml Gran Lungo, and a 230 ml Mug capsule is not automatically weaker than every smaller format. Compare specific blends within the size you prefer, and adjust milk or water to your own taste rather than using volume as a substitute for a tasting note.

The machine will not accept a capsule
- Confirm that the pod is a Vertuo capsule, not an Original capsule.
- Inspect the capsule for dents, punctures or a damaged barcode area.
- Clean and dry the capsule-reading area according to your machine’s care instructions.
- Close and lock the head fully, then retry with an undamaged capsule.
The drink is the wrong volume
- Check whether the machine has a programmed custom volume for that capsule type.
- Verify the capsule format: 40 ml Espresso, 80 ml Double Espresso, 150 ml Gran Lungo, 230 ml Mug, 355 ml XL/Alto or 535 ml Carafe.
- Remember that stopping the brew early produces less than the published output.
- If the discrepancy persists with an unmodified setting, consult the exact model’s support instructions rather than changing capsule types at random.
A large capsule does not work on the machine
XL and Carafe support is not universal across Vertuo machines. Check the model and region-specific compatibility information. Do not force the capsule into the head or improvise a cup stand; incompatibility is a machine-support issue, not a problem solved by extra pressure.
