Nemotron 3 is NVIDIA’s hybrid Mamba–Transformer mixture-of-experts family for reasoning-heavy agents. Current materials advertise context windows of up to 1 million tokens, but that is a model-specific maximum—not a guarantee of identical quality or speed for every request. Nano, Super, and Ultra target different efficiency and capability levels, and you can access them through hosted API/NIM services or deploy compatible checkpoints yourself.
What Nemotron 3 is built for
Nemotron 3 combines Mamba and Transformer components in a mixture-of-experts architecture. NVIDIA describes the family as supporting visual understanding, reasoning, and tool use in one model line. That combination matters for agents: an agent must interpret a request, maintain state, decide which external action is needed, call a tool, inspect the result, and continue until it reaches a useful stopping point.

The models are not an autonomous software package. They are reasoning components that sit inside an orchestration loop. Your application still supplies the tool definitions, authentication, permission boundaries, retry policy, memory, observability, and stop conditions. NVIDIA’s white paper says Nemotron 3 models were post-trained with multi-environment reinforcement learning for reasoning and multi-step tool use; that training supports agent behavior, but it does not guarantee that an unguarded deployment will act reliably or safely.

The headline figure is up to 1 million tokens. NVIDIA’s 2025 Nemotron 3 white paper reports a context length of up to 1M tokens, and the NIM model card for Nemotron 3 Super 120B A12B lists “Context Length | Up to 1M tokens.” The figure is also used in current product and repository material for long-running coding, research, and enterprise agent workflows.

“Up to” is important. The exact limit belongs to a particular checkpoint and serving configuration. A prompt that fits within the advertised window can still experience higher latency, lower throughput, truncation by a gateway, or weaker retrieval and reasoning as the context grows. Quantization, batching, GPU memory, runtime settings, and the number of tool-result turns all change the usable capacity.
What consumes the context
- Your system and developer instructions.
- The user’s current request and earlier conversation turns.
- Retrieved documents, source code, logs, images or image descriptions, and tool schemas.
- Every tool call and the tool’s returned payload, including failed calls and retries.
- The model’s generated reasoning or answer, subject to the endpoint’s output limit.
For a long-running agent, a million-token budget can be consumed by tool transcripts as easily as by source documents. Keep only the state needed for the next decision, summarize completed work, and store durable facts outside the active prompt. Before production, test the exact model card and serving stack you will use rather than assuming that every Nemotron checkpoint exposes the family maximum.
Can Nemotron call tools?
Yes. NVIDIA positions Nemotron for reasoning plus tool calling, and the Nemotron 3 repository includes Nemotron-Agentic-v1 conversational tool-use data. In practice, Nemotron can produce a structured call such as a function name and validated arguments; your application then executes the function and sends the result back as the next turn.

A controlled Nemotron agent loop
- Describe only permitted tools. Give each function a strict name, typed parameters, an unambiguous purpose, and limits such as read-only access or an allowed domain list.
- Send the task and tool schemas. Include the minimum relevant conversation and retrieved material. Do not expose secrets in the prompt.
- Validate the model’s proposed call. Check the function name, required fields, data types, authorization, rate limits, and whether the requested action is appropriate for the user.
- Execute outside the model. Run the function in a sandbox or service with its own credentials. Treat model output as untrusted input.
- Return a bounded result. Strip credentials and irrelevant fields, cap payload size, label errors clearly, and attach identifiers that help the model distinguish fresh data from stale data.
- Continue or stop. Allow another reasoning turn only when a defined condition is met. Enforce maximum steps, time, spend, and retries, then produce a human-readable failure state if the limit is reached.
while steps < MAX_STEPS:
response = model.generate(messages, tools=allowed_tools)
if not response.tool_call:
return response.text
call = validate(response.tool_call, user_permissions)
result = execute_in_sandbox(call)
messages.append(tool_result(call.id, redact_and_limit(result)))
steps += 1
return "The agent stopped after reaching its execution limit."
This loop is implementation guidance, not a claim that NVIDIA guarantees autonomous reliability. Add audit logs, human approval for irreversible actions, timeout handling, and a way to cancel a run. A tool schema can make an action available; it cannot decide whether your organization should permit that action.
Nano vs. Super vs. Ultra
NVIDIA’s current positioning divides the family by workload rather than by a single “best” model. Nano is aimed at efficient specialized sub-agents. Super targets high-accuracy, high-throughput reasoning and tool calling in multi-agent systems. Ultra is intended for the most demanding long-horizon or mission-critical workflows.
| Family tier | Best fit | Context information | Parameter information | Serving implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano | Efficient, focused sub-agents and lower-cost orchestration tasks | Nemotron 3 materials advertise up to 1M tokens for the family; the exact Nano checkpoint limit is model-specific | Not stated in the supplied NVIDIA materials; use the exact model card | Generally the lightest tier, but actual latency and hardware needs depend on checkpoint, quantization, and runtime |
| Super | High-accuracy, high-throughput reasoning and tool calling in multi-agent systems | Nemotron 3 Super 120B A12B NIM card: up to 1M tokens | “120B A12B” is the checkpoint designation; consult its card for the serving-specific active/total parameter accounting | Large-model serving; plan capacity, batching, and possibly multiple GPUs |
| Ultra | Long-horizon coding, research, enterprise, and mission-critical agent workflows | Repository and technical material describe a 1M-token context | Parameter count not stated here; the technical report says pretraining used 20 trillion text tokens | Designed for multi-GPU deployment and a substantially larger serving footprint |
The 20-trillion-token figure is a training-report detail for Ultra, not a benchmark of answer quality or a promise about how much data your application can submit. Choose by the cost of an error, the number of concurrent runs, the length of tool loops, and your latency target. A small model that completes a narrow subtask reliably can be more useful than a larger model forced to handle every step.

A practical selection rule
- Use Nano when many inexpensive workers must classify, extract, route, or perform tightly scoped actions.
- Use Super when tool selection, reasoning accuracy, and throughput are central and you can support large-model serving.
- Use Ultra when a run must retain very long codebases, research trails, or enterprise histories and the cost of a wrong multi-step decision is high.
Benchmark the complete agent, not just a single prompt. Measure successful task completion, invalid-tool-call rate, recovery after tool errors, tokens and seconds per completed task, and behavior when the context is near its limit.
Hosted API or self-hosted Nemotron?
| Option | Advantages | Costs and risks to assess | Good starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted API or NVIDIA NIM | Fastest evaluation path, managed runtime, and less GPU and serving operations | Review current pricing, quotas, rate limits, data handling, retention, region availability, and network requirements for the endpoint you select | Prototype the agent with synthetic or non-sensitive data, then validate latency and tool-call behavior at realistic concurrency |
| Self-hosted GPU | Control over network location, data path, version pinning, and custom serving policies | You provide compatible accelerators, drivers, containers, monitoring, upgrades, capacity planning, and incident response; large checkpoints may require multiple GPUs | Start with the exact checkpoint’s NIM or repository configuration and reproduce its supported parallelism before optimizing |
Hosted evaluation steps
- Identify the exact Nemotron checkpoint and endpoint version; do not rely on the family name alone.
- Read the endpoint’s model card for context, input modalities, tool-call format, generation limits, and recommended parameters.
- Run a fixed test set containing ordinary questions, long contexts, malformed tool arguments, permission denials, timeouts, and contradictory tool results.
- Measure end-to-end completion and cost under the concurrency you actually expect. A fast first token does not prove that a multi-step run will be fast.
- Review data-processing and retention terms before sending customer, regulated, or proprietary information.
Self-hosting steps
- Confirm that the checkpoint license, model format, quantization, GPU architecture, driver, and serving runtime are compatible.
- Estimate memory for weights, key/value or recurrent state, long-context activation overhead, and concurrent requests. The 1M-token headline does not specify a universal VRAM requirement.
- For large models, configure the multi-GPU topology described by the repository or NIM documentation. Test interconnect bandwidth as well as raw accelerator memory.
- Pin versions and record tokenizer, sampling, parallelism, and context settings so results can be reproduced.
- Add authentication, request limits, telemetry, graceful model fallback, and a shutdown path before exposing the service to an agent.
For the Nemotron 3 Super 120B A12B NIM card, NVIDIA recommends a temperature of 1.0 and top_p of 0.95 across reasoning, tool calling, and general chat. Treat those as that card’s starting recommendations, then validate them against your own task and serving version rather than assuming they are universal defaults for every Nemotron model.

The NVIDIA Nemotron Open Model License states: Works are commercially usable.
It also states that users are free to create and distribute derivative works, and that NVIDIA does not claim ownership of outputs generated using the works or their derivatives. Those permissions make commercial applications and fine-tuned or otherwise modified distributions possible, subject to the license’s definitions and conditions.

Conditions you still need to check
- Use the license shipped with the checkpoint. Do not assume that every older NVIDIA model uses the Nemotron Open Model License.
- Read notice and distribution requirements. Derivative or redistributed packages may need specific notices or accompanying license text.
- Check termination provisions. The license includes circumstances that can terminate rights, so compliance is not a one-time checkbox.
- Separate model rights from other rights. Your data, retrieved documents, tool APIs, trademarks, and generated content may carry obligations unrelated to the model license.
- Record the exact version. Keep the checkpoint identifier, license file, modifications, and notices with each release.
“Commercially usable” is not the same as “risk-free for every business use.” Have counsel review a deployment that redistributes weights, serves customers, incorporates third-party data, or operates in a regulated environment.
Common failure modes and fixes
The request fits on paper but is truncated
Check the gateway’s input and output caps, tokenizer accounting, tool transcript size, and any hidden system prompt. Reduce retrieved passages, summarize completed turns, and verify the actual context limit for the checkpoint.
Recommended Free Tools
Tool calls are syntactically valid but unsafe
Validate arguments against a schema and authorization policy outside the model. Use read-only tools by default, require confirmation for irreversible operations, and run external actions with narrowly scoped credentials.

- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete
- Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
- Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking
Long runs become slow or expensive
Cap the number of steps, stop retry loops, cache deterministic lookups, and route narrow subtasks to an efficient model. Track cost and latency per completed task rather than per generation.
Self-hosting runs out of memory
Lower concurrency, use a supported quantization, shorten active context, or distribute the checkpoint across multiple GPUs according to its serving documentation. Do not infer a hardware requirement from parameter count alone.
A model update changes behavior
Pin the model and runtime versions, retain a regression set, and compare tool-call schemas and completion rates after every upgrade. Recheck the license file when changing checkpoints.
Bottom line for choosing Nemotron
Nemotron is most compelling when an application needs a reasoning model that can retain substantial context and participate in controlled, multi-step tool workflows. Treat 1M tokens as an advertised ceiling tied to specific models and serving conditions. Select Nano, Super, or Ultra according to task complexity and operations budget; use hosted API/NIM services for the quickest evaluation, or self-host when data control and version ownership justify GPU and serving work. Finally, preserve the exact checkpoint license and satisfy its notice, distribution, and termination conditions before shipping a commercial system.
