The neko.dll error usually means the application that needs the NekoVM runtime can no longer find the correct library. neko.dll is the Windows shared library for NekoVM, not a standard Windows system DLL. The safest repair is to identify the affected application, check whether security software quarantined the file, run Windows’ component repairs in Microsoft’s order (DISM first, then SFC), and repair or reinstall the application or its official NekoVM distribution. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random mirror.
What neko.dll is and why Windows reports it
NekoVM’s official documentation identifies the Windows VM as a shared library named neko.dll (with the accompanying neko.lib import library in a development distribution). On Unix-like systems, the equivalent files are named libneko.so*. That makes neko.dll part of the Neko runtime or an application’s bundled Neko runtime, rather than a DLL that ships as part of ordinary Windows installations.

When Windows displays “This program can’t start because neko.dll is missing from your computer,” “neko.dll was not found,” or a similar message, the loader could not locate a usable copy at the time the program started. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, left out of an incomplete installation, or replaced by a file with the wrong architecture or version. The message identifies a loading failure; it does not by itself prove that Windows is infected or that the DLL should be copied into a system folder.

Repair decisions depend on whether one application fails or many programs fail. A failure limited to one application normally points to that application’s installation or its bundled runtime. A developer working with NekoVM may instead have a damaged or incomplete NekoVM distribution. Work through these checks before changing files.

Record the exact error and application
- Write down the program name, its version if shown, and the complete error text.
- Note whether the failure occurs immediately at launch, after an update, or only when opening a particular project or file.
- Record whether other applications start normally. This distinguishes an application-specific problem from a broader Windows component problem.
Check security-software history
Open the quarantine or protection-history view in the antivirus or Windows Security product you use. Search for an event naming neko.dll or the affected application. If the file was quarantined, do not restore it blindly: verify that the application came from its legitimate vendor or a trusted store, and that the detected path matches that installation. A false positive can remove a required runtime, but an untrusted program should not be granted an exception merely to suppress the message.
Inspect the application’s own folder
In File Explorer, open the folder containing the program’s executable. Look for neko.dll and other Neko files that were installed with the application. Do not rename, delete, or replace files yet. If the executable is present but the Neko files are absent, an incomplete installation or quarantine is more likely than a Windows-wide failure. If files are present, the copy can still be the wrong 32-bit/64-bit build or an incompatible version.
Confirm architecture and source
Find out whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit and whether the NekoVM package that supports it has the same architecture. A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit DLL. Use the application’s documentation or vendor support information for this detail; do not infer compatibility from a filename alone.

Run DISM and SFC in the supported order
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include two elevated repair tools. Microsoft documents running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC): DISM provides the files required to repair corrupted files, and SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies from its cache. These commands are useful when Windows components are damaged, although they will not manufacture a missing, application-specific Neko runtime.

Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate administrator privileges.
Run DISM first
At the elevated prompt, enter this command exactly and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthLeave the window open until DISM reports completion. The operation can pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the prompt or power off the computer while it is servicing the image. If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, continue to SFC. If it reports that source files cannot be found or that the operation failed, record the exact code and message; the recovery section below explains the next branch.
Run System File Checker second
In the same administrator window, run:
sfc /scannowSFC checks protected Windows system files and reports one of several outcomes: no integrity violations, corrupted files repaired, corrupted files found but not all repaired, or an inability to perform the requested operation. Restart Windows after a successful repair, then test the affected program. Because neko.dll is normally supplied by NekoVM or the application, a clean SFC result does not rule out an application installation problem.

Use the SFC log when repair is incomplete
If SFC says it found files that it could not repair, review its CBS log to determine which Windows files were affected. The log is typically located at %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Search the entries for the date and time of your scan and preserve the relevant lines before attempting more repairs. The log may show a Windows component issue unrelated to the Neko application; avoid deleting files simply because they appear in the log.

Repair or reinstall the application that shows the error
When one program fails and other software works, repairing that program is the most targeted and reversible remedy. Use the vendor’s repair feature if it provides one, or reinstall from the original installer, the vendor’s official download, or a trusted store. A Microsoft Q&A response for the specific neko.dll message recommends completely uninstalling and reinstalling the dependent application using the manufacturer’s supplied media.
Use an available repair option first
- Close the affected application and any related background process.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the application, open its advanced options if offered, and choose Repair. Some desktop installers instead provide Repair from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Restart the application and test the same action that produced the error.
A repair normally preserves user data, but the exact behavior depends on the vendor’s installer. Back up project files and settings before choosing an option that says Reset or removes user data.
Perform a clean reinstall when repair is unavailable
- Back up documents, projects, saved games, presets, license information, and any application-specific settings.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it. Do not manually delete unrelated folders or registry entries.
- Obtain the installer from the application’s vendor, the original installation media, or the trusted store where you purchased it. Avoid DLL-download sites.
- Install the build that matches your Windows architecture and the application’s documented requirements. If the installer offers an optional Neko runtime component, leave it selected unless the vendor says otherwise.
- Launch the program before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications. If it works, add those components back one at a time to identify a conflicting or incomplete add-on.
Reinstallation restores the runtime files expected by that particular application. Copying a DLL from another program can create a version mismatch even when the filename is identical.

If you installed NekoVM for development rather than using a packaged application, restore the matching official NekoVM distribution. The Windows package should contain the Neko runtime files appropriate for your toolchain, including the shared library and development import library where applicable.

- Check the project’s documentation for the required NekoVM release and whether it expects 32-bit or 64-bit binaries.
- Remove or move the damaged development installation only after saving project files and environment settings.
- Install the official distribution that matches the project and operating-system architecture.
- Recheck the project’s PATH or other runtime search settings so they point to the restored distribution, not an older copy.
- Build or run a minimal project before reintroducing extensions. If the minimal project works but the original does not, the remaining issue is likely in the project’s configuration or dependency set.
Do not mix neko.dll from one NekoVM release with libraries from another, and do not combine 32-bit and 64-bit files. The Neko runtime and the application that loads it must agree on both version and architecture.
If antivirus removed neko.dll
A quarantine event changes the order of work. First verify the application’s provenance and the path shown in the security event. If the program is legitimate and the event is a confirmed false positive, follow the security product’s documented restore or allow procedure, then reinstall the application from its official source so that all runtime files are refreshed together. If the program came from an unknown source, leave the file quarantined, uninstall the program, and obtain a trusted replacement rather than restoring an isolated DLL.
After reinstalling, update the security product and run a full scan according to its normal controls. Do not disable protection system-wide just to make the error disappear, and do not add broad exclusions for an entire drive.
When DISM or SFC cannot repair Windows
A failed command does not mean you should download neko.dll. It means Windows may need a valid repair source or a recovery operation.
DISM cannot find source files
Record the exact DISM message and verify that Windows Update is available. Microsoft’s repair guidance allows using a valid Windows installation source when the local component store cannot supply the files. The source must correspond to the installed Windows edition and architecture; using an unrelated image can introduce a different servicing problem. If you are unsure which source is appropriate, consult Microsoft’s current Windows repair documentation or your organization’s support team rather than guessing at command-line paths.
SFC still reports unrepaired files
Review CBS.log, restart Windows, and run the documented DISM-then-SFC sequence again only when the earlier command completed. Repeated scans cannot fix an absent application runtime. If the log identifies persistent Windows corruption, move to Windows recovery options after backing up personal data.
Use recovery or reinstall options as a last resort
Before a reset or reinstall, back up personal files and confirm that you have installation media, account credentials, application installers, and license details. Choose the least destructive recovery option that addresses the diagnosed problem. A recovery reset affects Windows more broadly than repairing one application and is therefore less reversible. If the only symptom remains a single program’s neko.dll message, return to that program’s official repair or reinstall path instead of resetting Windows.

Why a random DLL download is the wrong fix
- The filename alone does not identify the NekoVM release, compiler build, or 32-bit/64-bit architecture.
- A mirror cannot guarantee that the file came from the Neko project or the application’s vendor.
- Replacing one file can leave companion libraries, configuration files, or registry entries missing.
- An arbitrary DLL may load far enough to produce a different crash, making diagnosis harder.
- Downloading a file from an unknown source introduces a provenance and malware risk that an official reinstall avoids.
Keep the original error and installation details until the application works. If you need help from the vendor, provide the exact message, Windows edition, application version, architecture, and the results of DISM and SFC rather than sending an unverified DLL.
Verify the repair
- Restart Windows after completing the selected repair.
- Launch the affected application from its normal shortcut, not from a copied executable.
- Repeat the operation that originally triggered the error.
- Check that the application can open an existing project or document and save a test copy.
- If the error returns, compare the new message with the original and check whether security software quarantined the file again.
A successful launch confirms that the loader found a compatible runtime; it does not establish that every plug-in or project dependency is healthy. Add optional components back gradually and keep the working installer or NekoVM package available for future recovery.

If only one program reports neko.dll, repair or reinstall that program from its official source, using the matching architecture and runtime. If you are developing with NekoVM, restore the matching official distribution instead. Run DISM and then SFC when Windows corruption is plausible, and escalate to a valid repair source or recovery only when those tools document an unresolved Windows problem. At no point is a random DLL mirror a dependable substitute for the correct vendor or NekoVM files.
