Price also discusses Sámi religion and the noaidi, a Sámi ritual specialist, in considering relations between Sámi and Norse populations. His argument is not that seiðr and noaidevuohta—the Sámi religious practice discussed in the book—are interchangeable. Rather, evidence from a neighboring tradition can help scholars ask better questions about Norse material.

Comparison is a method, not proof of shared practice
That distinction matters. Similarities between practices do not establish that the same phenomenon existed in both cultures, or that one group borrowed it from the other. Price puts the caution directly: “From studies of spirituality among the Sámi we cannot say that the same phenomena must have occurred in Norse beliefs, or vice versa.” Comparison can sharpen an interpretation; it cannot, by itself, settle cultural influence or sameness.
Price argues that Sámi people should be considered on equal terms with neighboring Nordic populations when interpreting the Viking Age. What the evidence can—and cannot—show
Archaeological and settlement evidence discussed by Price has been interpreted as indicating Sámi presence and interaction beyond a simple picture of Sámi populations confined to a distant northern margin. That is a scholarly interpretation, not a precise map of settled borders: assigning ethnicity to archaeological remains is contested, and the evidence does not establish exact boundaries or the identity of every community.
