For most first-time players, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is the better starting point. It keeps the original cops-versus-racers design while adding enhanced visuals, cross-platform asynchronous competition through Autolog, an updated career presentation, photo-mode options, and the main downloadable content (DLC). Electronic Arts says that DLC adds six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges.
If you already own the original, the decision is less automatic. The remaster is most convincing when you want the extra challenges, crossplay, updated presentation, or access on a supported modern platform. If you simply want the same core races on a system where the original already works, compare the current regional price before buying again.

The short answer: which version should you play?
Choose Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered if you are new to the game, want the most complete package, or expect to compare results with friends on other platforms. EA describes the remaster as the original experience updated with enhanced visuals, cross-platform competition and the main DLC. The remaster also presents an updated career experience for both cops and racers and adds photo-mode options.

Choose the original if you already own it, it still runs on your preferred system, and you do not need the added challenges, cross-platform features or presentation changes. The remaster is not a new game built around a different driving model; it is a refreshed release of the same cops-versus-racers concept. Buying it again is therefore a value decision, not an automatic upgrade.

One important boundary: the remaster’s crossplay does not mean that original-game owners and remastered-game owners can play together. EA’s information describes cross-platform competition for the remaster, while the two releases remain separate products.
What is actually different?
The meaningful differences fall into five areas: included content, multiplayer connectivity, presentation, interface and platform access. The table separates documented changes from details that have not been established.
| Area | Original | Remastered | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core concept | Police and racer events built around high-speed pursuit competition. | The same core cops-versus-racers experience. | The remaster is an updated edition rather than a fundamentally different game. |
| Additional content | Any DLC depends on the edition and platform you already own. | Includes the main DLC. | EA describes the included DLC as six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges. |
| Multiplayer | No documented support in the supplied EA remaster materials for playing with remaster users. | Cross-platform asynchronous competition powered by Autolog; Crossplay can be enabled in the PC manual. | Players can compare and compete across supported platforms in the remaster. This is not evidence of crossplay between editions. |
| Graphics | Original presentation. | Enhanced visuals, including brighter-looking night scenes in EA’s comparison material. | No reliable platform-by-platform resolution or frame-rate comparison is established. |
| Menus and HUD | Original interface and transitions. | Meristation reported HUD and interface changes and faster menu and event transitions. | That is a reviewer’s observation, not a universal benchmark for every platform. |
| Photo mode | Not established in the supplied materials. | New photo-mode options are called out in EA’s launch announcement. | The announcement confirms the feature but does not provide a complete option list. |
| Platforms | Availability varies by the original release and the system you own. | PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch; PlayStation says it can be played on PS5. | Exact current store availability and regional pricing must be checked for your market. |
Included DLC: the clearest reason to buy the remaster
The remaster bundles the main DLC instead of making a new player assemble the original release and its add-ons. In its 2020 launch announcement, Electronic Arts described the package as including “all the main DLC,” delivering “an extra six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges.” Those are EA’s published figures, not the result of an independent playtime test.
That bundle matters in two different ways:
- For a new player: the remaster is a simpler purchase because the principal add-on content is already part of the package.
- For an original owner: the value depends on which DLC you already purchased. If you own the original game but not its add-ons, the remaster may consolidate content you would otherwise need to locate separately.
The available material does not establish a platform-by-platform inventory of every individual DLC item, nor does it state that every historical promotional item is included. Treat “main DLC” as EA’s scope for the bundle rather than as a promise about every piece of content ever associated with the original.
Multiplayer and crossplay: what “cross-platform” means here
Asynchronous competition through Autolog
EA describes the remaster’s multiplayer feature as cross-platform asynchronous competition powered by Autolog. Asynchronous means you can compare performance and compete through recorded results and challenges without assuming that everyone is in the same live session at the same moment. The feature is aimed at the game’s long-running comparison loop: beat a rival’s time, score or event result, then invite a response.
The practical benefit is a larger circle of friends and rivals. A player on one supported platform can participate in the remaster’s cross-platform comparison system with players on other supported platforms, subject to the game’s account and network requirements.
Enabling Crossplay on PC
The PC manual says players can enable Crossplay and find cross-platform friends in the EA Friends list. The exact wording and menu placement can change with patches or platform interfaces, so use the in-game settings and friends list as the authority when your installation is updated.

- Open the remaster’s online or gameplay settings on PC.
- Locate the Crossplay setting described in the PC manual.
- Enable Crossplay if you want to participate in cross-platform comparisons.
- Use the EA Friends list to locate friends who play on another supported platform.
- Confirm that everyone is using the remastered release, not the original game.
That last check prevents a common misunderstanding: the documentation supports cross-platform play and comparison within the remaster. It does not say that a person running the original can join a person running the remaster.
What the feature does not prove
Cross-platform support is not a guarantee of a particular online population, matchmaking speed or regional availability. No current player-count measurement is established here. It also does not establish that every platform has identical online options, performance or interface behavior. Consider crossplay a documented capability, then verify your platform’s current network requirements before purchase.
Visual changes: improved presentation without invented numbers
EA says the remaster has enhanced visuals. EA’s Steam announcements include a side-by-side comparison and describe brighter night scenes. Those materials support a visible presentation update, but they do not establish a universal resolution, frame-rate target or image-quality setting for every PC, console and Switch configuration.
That distinction matters when comparing screenshots or videos. A brighter scene can improve visibility and atmosphere without telling you whether a particular platform renders at a specific resolution. Likewise, a trailer or promotional screenshot cannot establish how consistently a frame rate is maintained during every event.
Use the visual update as a qualitative advantage:
- Expect a refreshed look compared with the original release.
- Expect night scenes to appear brighter in EA’s comparison material.
- Do not buy on the assumption of a particular resolution or frame rate unless your platform’s current technical documentation supplies it.
- Remember that display settings, hardware and output mode can affect what you see.
Interface and career changes
HUD and menu flow
A contemporary Meristation review reported HUD and interface changes, along with faster menu and event transitions. This can make the remaster feel more current even when the underlying events remain familiar. The report is an editorial observation, not a controlled timing test, so it should not be read as a guaranteed loading-time improvement on every platform.
The difference is most relevant to returning players. Someone who remembers the original menus may notice a changed arrangement or quicker movement between events, while a first-time player is more likely to experience the remaster’s interface simply as the version’s normal presentation.
Updated career experience
EA’s launch announcement calls out an updated career experience for both sides of the rivalry: cop and racer. The announcement does not provide a complete event-by-event change log, so the safe conclusion is that the career presentation and progression experience were updated, not that every original event was redesigned.

If you are choosing because you prefer one role, the remaster does not force you to pick between them. Its career framing continues to support both cop and racer perspectives.
Photo mode
The remaster adds new photo-mode options according to EA’s launch announcement. The available material does not list every camera, filter or export control. Treat photo mode as an additional creative feature rather than a reason to expect a specific toolkit.
Platforms, release timing and compatibility
EA’s official information lists the remaster for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. EA’s 2020 announcement gave November 6 as the release date for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, followed by November 13 for Switch.
PlayStation notes that the game can be played on PS5. That compatibility statement comes with a qualification: some PS4 features may be absent. If you are buying for PS5, check the current PlayStation store listing and the compatibility notes for your account’s region instead of assuming that every PS4 feature is present.
| Platform situation | What to check before buying | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| PC | System requirements, current store edition and Crossplay setting. | PC is the platform for which the supplied manual specifically documents enabling Crossplay. |
| PlayStation 4 | Current regional digital listing or physical edition. | The remaster launched on PS4 and includes the updated feature set. |
| PS5 | Compatibility note and any absent PS4 features. | PlayStation says it can be played on PS5, with a qualification about some PS4 features. |
| Xbox | Your console generation, storefront region and edition. | EA lists Xbox availability, but the supplied material does not establish identical behavior across generations. |
| Nintendo Switch | Digital or physical availability, storage and online requirements. | Switch received its launch after the other listed platforms and is the portable option named in EA’s announcement. |
The evidence does not verify current inventory, current regional pricing or whether a specific physical copy remains widely available. Check the store you actually use, and make sure the listing is for the remaster rather than the original.

You have never played Hot Pursuit
Pick the remaster. You receive the original-style cops-versus-racers structure, the principal DLC bundle, cross-platform asynchronous competition and the updated presentation in one release. There is little reason for a first-time player to seek out the older edition unless a particular platform or price makes it substantially more practical.
You own the original but not its DLC
Compare the remaster’s current price with the cost and availability of the original add-ons in your region. EA’s stated six hours of additional gameplay and more than 30 challenges give the remaster a concrete content advantage, but the value depends on whether you would actually play those challenges.

You own the original with its DLC
The remaster becomes a feature decision. Consider it if you want enhanced visuals, the updated interface and career presentation, new photo-mode options, cross-platform comparison, or access on a supported system where the original is inconvenient. If none of those matter, the original may already meet your needs.
You want to play with friends on different platforms
Use the remaster, provided all players purchase and run the remastered release on supported platforms. Its documented cross-platform feature is the relevant reason to choose it. Do not assume that an original copy can join a remaster copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou mainly play on PS5
The remaster is the listed route because PlayStation says it can be played on PS5. Check the current compatibility information because some PS4 features may be absent. If you already own the original elsewhere, compare the convenience of the PS5-compatible edition with the cost of buying again.
You want a portable version
The remaster is the version associated with the Nintendo Switch release. Verify the current Switch listing and online requirements in your region. The supplied information does not establish a performance comparison between Switch and the other platforms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical buying checklist
- Identify your edition. Confirm whether the store page says “Remastered,” not merely “Hot Pursuit.”
- List what you already own. Note the original game, any DLC and the platform on which each is playable.
- Decide whether crossplay matters. If friends use different platforms, the remaster’s documented cross-platform competition may justify the purchase.
- Value the added content. EA attributes six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges to the included main DLC.
- Check compatibility. For PS5, read the current note about absent PS4 features; on PC, review requirements and the Crossplay setting.
- Compare the actual regional price. Prices and inventory were not established here, so use the storefront for your country and platform on the day you buy.
- Set expectations about performance. Treat enhanced visuals as a documented qualitative update, not a promise of a specific resolution or frame rate.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming crossplay includes the original game
It does not follow from EA’s cross-platform description. Crossplay applies to the remaster’s supported competition features. Make sure every participant owns the same remastered release.
Expecting a full technical benchmark
EA’s comparison material supports enhanced visuals and brighter night scenes, but it does not provide a complete platform-by-platform resolution and frame-rate table. Avoid treating promotional imagery as a benchmark.
Counting the six hours as a guaranteed playtime
“Six hours of gameplay” is EA’s description of the included DLC. Individual completion time varies with play style, retries and whether you pursue every challenge. The figure should be read as a publisher-provided content estimate, not a guaranteed personal playtime.
Best Value
- Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit contains 1-8 player online support as well as leaderboards
- Play as either cops and racers in both a tremendously deep, fully-defined single player career and a groundbreaking multiplayer experience across all race modes
- The Need For Speed Autolog system connects friends directly to each other's games, enabling them to compare and share all their experiences and challenges
- Whether taking down suspects with a variety of cop weapons or using evasion equipment to outsmart the cops, players will always have a method for gaining an edge over their opponent
- Feel the power of busting suspects in supercharged cop interceptors like the Lamborghini Reventon or outsmarting the law as a racer in high performance supercars like the Pagani Zonda Cinque
Buying the wrong platform edition
Availability is platform-specific. Confirm the platform icon, generation and region before checkout, especially when a store presents both the original and remastered releases.
Assuming every PS4 feature is present on PS5
PlayStation’s compatibility note says some PS4 features may be absent. Read the current listing instead of relying on the PS4 feature set.
What has not been established
A careful comparison should also identify the information that is not available. No reliable, platform-by-platform technical comparison is established for resolution or frame rate. There is no verified current player count, online-population report, store inventory snapshot or universal loading-time benchmark. Current prices vary by country, storefront, physical or digital format and promotion, so a single worldwide price would be misleading.
Those limits do not erase the documented differences. They simply define what you can conclude confidently: the remaster adds the main DLC, cross-platform asynchronous competition, enhanced visuals, updated career presentation and photo-mode options, while the original remains the lower-cost choice when you already own it and do not need those additions.
Final recommendation
For a new player, start with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered. It is the complete, easiest-to-recommend package because the main DLC is included and the remaster adds cross-platform competition and presentation updates.
For an original owner, buy it only when one of the documented differences solves a real problem: you want the extra challenges, need cross-platform competition, prefer the refreshed presentation, want the PS5 or Switch version, or need a supported modern platform. Otherwise, keep playing the original and use the current regional price as the deciding factor.
