You do not need a dedicated server to play Necesse multiplayer. Steam can host a world from inside the game, but the owner must stay online and remain in that world. A dedicated server is the better fit when friends need the same world to remain available while the owner is offline. This guide explains both choices, then walks through Windows and Debian-based Linux setup, port forwarding, joining, configuration, and troubleshooting.
Do you need a dedicated server for Necesse?
No. The Necesse Wiki’s Multiplayer article states: “It is not necessary to have a dedicated server in order to play multiplayer with others.” The simplest arrangement is to start Necesse through Steam, load or create a world, and invite friends through the game’s multiplayer features.

That in-game arrangement has one important limitation: the player who hosts the world must stay online and remain in that world. When that player quits or leaves the world, friends cannot continue playing there.

You still need to configure the server and network, so it is worthwhile only when persistent access matters.

Choose the hosting method that matches your group
| Method | When it fits | Who keeps it online | Setup and maintenance | Network considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-game Steam hosting | A group plays when the world owner is present. | The owner’s game session. | Lowest effort; no separate server installation. | Friends join through the game’s multiplayer flow; the owner must be reachable while playing. |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | The world should remain available without the owner in the game. | Your own Windows or Linux machine. | You install the server, configure it, apply updates, manage saves, and keep the process running. | Usually requires allowing the server port through the machine firewall and forwarding it on the router for players outside the local network. |
| Rented managed server | You want an always-on world without operating your own server computer. | The hosting provider’s machine. | The provider handles the underlying machine; you remain responsible for the game’s settings and access details. | The provider supplies a reachable address and its own control panel or instructions. Availability, location, pricing, and features vary and must be checked before purchase. |
There is no universally best route. In-game hosting is usually enough for occasional sessions. Self-hosting gives you direct control and avoids a recurring hosting bill, but requires a machine that stays online and some network administration. Managed hosting trades that administration for a recurring service cost.
What you need before installing a dedicated server
- A copy of the Necesse server files obtained from an official route: Steam’s Tools library, SteamCMD, or the official Necesse server-download page.
- A machine running Windows 64-bit, macOS, or Linux 64-bit for the platforms listed on the official server page. The Linux instructions discussed below are specifically for Debian-based distributions.
- Permission to run programs, open the server port in the operating system firewall, and change port-forwarding rules on the router if outside players will connect.
- A world name and a decision about player slots, password protection, and world-generation options.
- The public IPv4 address that friends outside your home network can reach. Do not give outside players a private LAN address.
The official server page displayed version 1.3.3, build 24926468, for its Windows 64-bit, macOS, and Linux 64-bit downloads when checked on October 13, 2026. Server builds can change, so check that page immediately before downloading rather than treating those numbers as permanent.
The published material does not establish a required CPU, RAM, storage size, router model, or internet speed. Do not assume a particular hardware specification is officially required; choose a machine appropriate for the number of players and the other workloads it will run, then monitor it for practical limits.
Set up a Necesse dedicated server on Windows
1. Obtain the server files
The Windows guide documents three acquisition routes:
- In Steam, open your Library, filter the list to Tools, and install Necesse Dedicated Server.
- Install SteamCMD, sign in anonymously, and run
app_update 1169370 validate. The app ID is the Necesse dedicated-server application documented by the guide. - Use the Windows 64-bit download offered on the official Necesse server page, checking the current build first.
Keep the server files in a folder you can find again. You will need that location for the launch script, configuration, saves, and logs.
2. Launch and answer the server prompts
Start StartServer.bat from the server folder. The console prompts you for the initial world and server settings. Work through them in order:

- Enter a world name. Use a name your group will recognize.
- Choose whether to use custom options.
- Set the host port. The guide’s default is UDP port
14159; keep that value unless you have a reason to choose another available port. - Set the number of player slots. The guide documents a range from 1 to 250. Treat that as the range stated by the guide, not as an independently tested or guaranteed limit for every current build.
- Set a password if you do not want anyone who discovers the address to enter.
- Choose the world-generation options presented by the server.
Record the port, password, and world name somewhere secure. Friends need the address and port, and you will need the same port when configuring the router and firewall.
3. Allow the server through Windows Firewall
When Windows asks whether to allow the server program through the firewall, allow the network profile you actually use. If no prompt appears, create an inbound rule for the server’s UDP port in Windows Firewall. The documented default is UDP 14159. A firewall exception on the computer is separate from a port-forwarding rule on the router; outside players generally need both pieces configured.
Use the narrowest rule that works for your setup. If you later change the server port, update the firewall rule to match it.
4. Forward the port on the router
For friends connecting from outside your home network, forward UDP port 14159 from the router to the local IP address of the computer running the server. Router interfaces use different labels, but the relevant section is commonly called port forwarding, NAT, or virtual server.
Give the server computer a stable local address, using your router’s address-reservation feature if available, so the forwarding rule does not point to the wrong device after a reboot. Do not publish your private address; it is only the destination used inside your home network.
5. Keep the process running and shut it down cleanly
Leave the server program running while players use the world. Closing the console window or terminating the process can interrupt access and risk losing the latest changes. When the session is over, use the server console’s shutdown command or normal shutdown control, then wait for the process to finish before restarting the computer or editing files.

6. Find Windows configuration, saves, and logs
The Windows Wiki instructions place server.cfg, world settings, saves, and logs under the Necesse folder in %appdata%. The world save is a ZIP file by default. Stop the server before changing configuration or replacing a save. Make a backup copy first so an unsuccessful edit can be reversed.
Set up a Necesse dedicated server on Debian-based Linux
The separate Linux guide is written for Debian-based distributions. Its package-installation commands should not be copied blindly to Fedora, Arch, Alpine, or another distribution; use that distribution’s documented package tools while following the same Necesse-specific application steps.
1. Install and use SteamCMD
Install SteamCMD using the method appropriate for your Debian-based system. In SteamCMD, use anonymous login and install or update app ID 1169370. The same app ID is used in the Windows SteamCMD route.

From the installed server directory, launch StartServer-nogui.sh. The Linux guide documents the same default server port, UDP 14159, and the same general choices for world name, custom options, slots, password, and world generation.
Make the script executable if your file permissions require it, and run it under the account that will own the Necesse data. Avoid running a game server as the system root account unless your operating-system policy specifically requires it.
3. Keep it running with an optional systemd service
The Linux guide shows an optional systemd service so the server can start with the machine. A service is useful for a computer that should recover automatically after a planned reboot, but it does not replace firewall or router configuration. Before enabling one, verify the working directory, executable path, user account, and the location where the service should write logs. Test a manual start first, then start and stop the service deliberately so you know how to recover it.

4. Find Linux data and logs
The Linux guide places server configuration, world saves, and logs under ~/.config/Necesse. Stop the server before editing files or replacing a world. Keep dated backups of the save archive before upgrades or configuration changes.
Configure the network correctly
Understand private and public addresses
A local address in the 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255 range is private to your LAN. It can work for someone on the same network, but it will not let a friend on the internet connect directly. Outside players need the host’s reachable public IPv4 address together with the server port.
Give friends the address in the form your setup requires: public IPv4 address plus port 14159 when using the documented default. If you choose a different port, they must use that port instead, and the firewall and router rules must match.
Check each layer in order
- Server process: confirm the Necesse server is running and listening on the selected port.
- Operating-system firewall: confirm an inbound UDP rule allows that port.
- Router: confirm the forwarding rule sends the same UDP port to the server computer’s current local address.
- Address: confirm outside players received the public IPv4 address, not a private LAN address.
- Game entry: confirm friends entered the same port and selected the saved server entry.
Port-checking websites can report a false negative, according to the Wiki’s troubleshooting guidance. A negative result does not by itself prove that the Necesse server is unreachable; test an actual connection while the server is running and verify each layer above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How friends join your dedicated server
- Start Necesse through Steam.
- Open Multiplayer.
- Choose Add Server.
- Enter a memorable name for the server entry.
- Enter the host’s reachable public IPv4 address.
- Enter the server port. Use
14159if the host kept the documented default. - Save the entry.
- Select the entry and choose Join Server.
- Enter the server password if one was configured.
Players on the same home network may use the server computer’s LAN address if the router and firewall permit it. Players elsewhere must use the public address. If the host changes internet providers or receives a new public address, the saved entry may need to be edited.

Manage configuration, worlds, and updates
Stop before editing
Stop the server cleanly before editing server.cfg, changing world settings, or copying a save. Editing while the process is writing data can leave the file or world in an inconsistent state. The Windows guide places these files under %appdata%; the Linux guide uses ~/.config/Necesse.
Best Value
Back up the world
The Windows documentation says the world save is a ZIP file by default. Copy the save to a separate location while the server is stopped, and label backups with the date and world name. Keep at least one backup from before a major update or configuration change. The Linux guide likewise identifies the save location under the Necesse configuration directory.
Update deliberately
Before updating, tell players to leave the world, stop the server, and make a backup. Download the current server build from the official page or update through SteamCMD. The official page showed version 1.3.3, build 24926468 on October 13, 2026, but that is a dated snapshot, not a promise that the same build remains current. Start the updated server and confirm that the expected world appears before inviting everyone back.
Protect access
- Use a server password when the world is intended for a private group.
- Share the public address and password only with people who should join.
- Keep the server software and operating system updated through their normal supported channels.
- Do not expose administrative files or the machine’s other services merely to make Necesse reachable.
Troubleshoot the most common connection failures
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Friends cannot see or join the server. | The server process is stopped, or the address is wrong. | Confirm the server is running, then verify the public IPv4 address and selected port. |
| Local players can join, but outside friends cannot. | Router forwarding or the computer firewall is incomplete. | Allow the UDP port through the operating system firewall and forward the same port to the server computer’s current LAN address. |
| A port-checking website says the port is closed. | The checker may not test the game’s listener correctly. | Use the Wiki’s warning as context: a false negative is possible. Test with an actual Necesse connection while the server is running and recheck the firewall, forwarding, and public address. |
| The host gave a 192.168.x.x address to a remote friend. | That is a private LAN address. | Give the outside player the reachable public IPv4 address instead. |
| The server starts but the old world is missing. | The process may be using a different data directory, account, or world name. | Stop the server, check the documented Windows or Linux Necesse data path, and verify the world save and configuration before changing anything. |
| Settings changes do not take effect. | The file was edited while the server was running, or the wrong configuration file was changed. | Stop the server, confirm the path, edit the correct file, save it, and start the server again. |
| Players are disconnected after the host closes a window. | The server process ended instead of shutting down normally. | Keep the console or service running during play and use the server’s normal shutdown control when finished. |
When managed hosting is worth considering
Renting a managed Necesse server can make sense if the group wants a persistent world but nobody wants to leave a home computer running, configure a router, or maintain a Linux service. The provider normally supplies the machine and a control panel, while you still choose the world settings and control who receives the address and password.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare services on the points that affect your group: region and latency, backup controls, supported Necesse build, player-slot settings, restart tools, access to logs and saves, cancellation terms, and whether the provider can change or restore a world. The reviewed Wiki lists several hosting companies, but it does not provide current comparative prices, availability, performance tests, or feature guarantees. Verify those details directly before paying.
Self-hosting remains the more controllable option when you already have a suitable always-on machine and are comfortable with firewall, router, and update tasks. In-game hosting remains the simplest option when persistence while the owner is away is not required.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose in-game hosting if everyone normally plays at the same time and the world owner will be present.
- Choose a self-hosted dedicated server if you want an independent world, have a machine that can stay online, and can manage the port and firewall settings.
- Choose a managed server if you need an always-on world but prefer a recurring service to maintaining your own machine.
- Before inviting anyone, confirm the server build, world save location, password, public address, port, firewall rule, and router forwarding.
The key distinction is persistence: an in-game host ties access to the owner’s active session, while a dedicated server keeps the world process separate from any one player’s game.
