Nearly half of reef-building coral species face higher risk of extinction

A global reassessment published in Nature on 15 October 2026 finds that 44% of assessed warm-water, reef-building coral species are threatened with extinction under IUCN criteria. Of 774 species with enough information for a category, 340 are Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered. This is a measure of relative risk, not a timetable predicting when any species will disappear.

What the 44% estimate covers

The assessment, led by the IUCN SSC Coral Specialist Group, reassessed 892 reef-building coral species worldwide. Data were sufficient to assign a Red List category to 774; the remaining 118 were Data Deficient. The threatened total is therefore 340 of 774 data-sufficient species, rather than 340 of all 892 species.

“Threatened” combines three IUCN categories: Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered. The category breakdown reported by IUCN is 56 Vulnerable, 251 Endangered and 33 Critically Endangered species. IUCN Director General Dr Grethel Aguilar has described climate change as the leading threat to reef-building corals and the natural systems that depend on them.

Red List categories compare a species’ estimated risk with standardized thresholds for population decline, distribution and related measures. They do not predict an extinction date, and a Critically Endangered classification does not mean extinction is inevitable.

Why this is a worsening trend

The result updates the first global coral assessment published in 2008, when about one-third of evaluated reef-building species were considered threatened. The Red List Index for these corals also declined from 0.96 before 1998 to 0.89 in 2008 and 0.74 in 2024. A lower index indicates that the group’s aggregate extinction risk has increased.

The 2026 estimate is a dated snapshot. Its data and analysis preceded the fourth global coral-bleaching event of 2023–2025 and the three hottest years on record cited by the authors. Those later stresses could make present-day risk higher, but only a future assessment can quantify the change.

How scientists estimated risk when long-term counts are scarce

Many coral species do not have continuous, species-level population surveys. The reassessment therefore combined several evidence streams:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Observed trends in coral cover.
  • Projected severe bleaching under the intermediate emissions pathway SSP2-4.5.
  • Generation length, which helps translate disturbance into likely population reduction.
  • Species traits associated with vulnerability or resilience.

These inputs are used to infer population reduction where direct time series are unavailable. Data Deficient species are not counted as safe; their missing information means the overall percentage includes assumptions about likely risk. Improving local monitoring, trait data and regional estimates should make later assessments more precise.

Climate change is the dominant driver

IUCN reports that climate change determines the final status of more than 90% of species in the highest-risk categories. Warmer seawater and increasingly severe thermal stress disrupt the coral–algae partnership that supplies much of a coral’s energy. The resulting bleaching can be followed by starvation and mortality when heat persists.

Local pressures can compound that global stress. Disease, pollution, destructive or excessive fishing and other human impacts reduce a reef’s ability to recover between heat events. The 2024 Atlantic assessment found elevated risk across all 85 valid Atlantic shallow-water reef-building coral species and identified climate change, disease, pollution and other anthropogenic threats.

Which regions and coral groups are most at risk?

Comparison Finding Qualification
Indo-Pacific 43% threatened Percentage of assessed species
Atlantic 50% threatened Percentage of assessed species
Indo-Pacific Acroporidae 191 of 279 species (68%) Endangered Family-level result

The especially high Acroporidae figure does not mean every coral family faces the same probability. It identifies a particularly exposed group within the Indo-Pacific assessment.

Do these numbers apply to every coral?

No. The 44% figure applies to warm-water reef-building corals: shallow, sunlit corals that construct tropical and subtropical reefs. Cold-water corals are a separate and much larger group. IUCN’s 2024 question-and-answer material notes that more than 4,000 cold-water coral species exist, but only 22 had been assessed at that time. Their limited coverage means the warm-water estimate must not be generalized to all coral species.

What protecting reefs requires

Cut greenhouse-gas emissions

Because warming determines the status of most species at highest risk, rapid reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions are the central measure. Local reef projects cannot compensate for continued increases in ocean temperature.

Reduce local stressors

Managing pollution, disease risks, damaging fishing practices and other local pressures can improve a reef’s capacity to withstand bleaching and recover afterward. The appropriate mix differs by reef and region.

Protect resilient reefs and improve management

Conservation can prioritize reefs that retain living coral or show resilience during heat events, while maintaining connected habitats where possible. Protection is most effective when paired with enforcement, water-quality controls and community participation.

Monitor and research adaptation

Species-level surveys are needed to replace Data Deficient classifications and detect changes between global assessments. Researchers are also studying whether particular corals can adapt to warmer water, how quickly that adaptation occurs and which interventions help without creating false confidence in restoration alone.

What the finding means for readers

“Nearly half at risk” does not mean half of the world’s reefs will vanish on a fixed schedule. It means that, using evidence available for 774 species and IUCN’s standardized thresholds, 340 meet criteria for elevated relative extinction risk. The result is a warning about the direction of change and the urgency of emissions cuts, local protection and better information—not a countdown clock.
