Neither NEAR Protocol nor Solana is universally cheaper or faster. Solana uses a per-signature fee in SOL with an optional priority charge, while NEAR uses gas-based fees that are usually described as fractions of a penny. NEAR publishes 600 ms blocks, 1.2-second finality, nine shards and a 1 million TPS scalability benchmark; Solana’s payment material cites roughly 400 ms settlement and a median fee near $0.001. Those numbers measure different things and should not be treated as a head-to-head race.
For a practical choice, match the chain to the workload. NEAR’s materials emphasize sharding, cross-chain Intents and chain abstraction. Solana emphasizes a single global state, atomic DeFi composition, payments, tokenization and a broad developer stack. The comparison below uses figures and documentation available on October 13, 2026; dynamic fees, performance and ecosystem totals can change.

NEAR vs. Solana at a glance
The table separates the metrics that are often collapsed into one vague claim of “speed.” A block or slot interval is not the same as the time a transaction is considered confirmed or final, and a benchmark capacity is not the same as routine user throughput.

| Dimension | NEAR Protocol | Solana | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee model | Gas-based fees for contract calls and transfers; documentation commonly describes costs as fractions of a penny. | 5,000 lamports per signature base fee, plus an optional priority fee based on compute-unit price and limit. | Actual cost depends on the exact transaction, network conditions and token prices. |
| Fee destination | Not stated in the cited material as a single universal split. | Base fee is split 50% burned and 50% paid to the validator; priority fee goes to the validator. | Solana’s accounting is explicit for its two fee components. |
| Published timing | 600 ms block time and 1.2 s finality. | Approximately 400 ms settlement in a Solana Foundation payments guide. | These are different assurance definitions, not an apples-to-apples latency test. |
| Published capacity | 1M TPS scalability claim; a 2025 post describes this as a publicly verifiable benchmark using NEAR core code, consumer-grade hardware and scripts. | No directly comparable capacity figure in the cited material. | Benchmark capacity should not be read as typical mainnet user throughput. |
| Scaling design | Nightshade sharding; the current overview lists nine shards and says shards can be added or removed dynamically. | Single global state with composable programs. | The designs create different trade-offs for parallel work, coordination and application composition. |
| Highlighted ecosystem | Cross-chain Intents, chain abstraction and sharded execution. | DeFi composability, payments, tokenization, games and developer infrastructure. | Choose by application requirements and available tooling, not by a single ecosystem total. |
All figures above are issuer-published claims or documentation statements, not an independent, same-window benchmark. A fair test must define the transaction, confirmation level, time window and fee conversion before recording results.

Which is cheaper, NEAR or Solana?
NEAR’s gas-based costs
NEAR charges gas for contract interactions and token transfers. Its documentation characterizes ordinary fees as fractions of a penny, but that phrase is not a fixed price. Gas consumption varies with the action: a simple transfer, a contract call and a multi-step application operation do not consume the same amount. The dollar value also changes with the NEAR token’s market price.
For budgeting, identify the exact method or transfer, estimate its gas use in native units, and convert at the token price at the time of execution. A statement such as “NEAR always costs one fraction of a cent” is too broad because it ignores both gas variation and exchange-rate movement.
Solana’s base and priority fees
Every Solana transaction pays a fee in SOL. The documented base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature. A transaction with more than one required signature therefore has a larger base component. Applications can also add a priority fee, calculated from the requested compute-unit price and compute-unit limit, to improve scheduling priority when demand is high.

The priority component is paid to the validator. A failed transaction still pays its fee, so retries and transactions that run out of compute budget must be included in a realistic cost estimate.
What the $0.001 Solana figure means
A Solana Foundation payments guide reports a median fee of approximately $0.001 per transaction while discussing 2025 stablecoin activity. This is a published, payment-oriented median, not a guarantee for every transfer or application call. It does not remove the effects of signature count, priority pricing, SOL’s exchange rate or congestion.

Use the median as context for a payments workload, not as a universal quote. A swap, a transaction requiring several signatures and a heavily contested block can have a different total. Keep the fee in lamports and SOL in your records, then add the contemporaneous USD conversion.
How to make a fair fee comparison
- Define one action on each chain, such as a native-token transfer or the same type of token swap.
- Record the number of signatures, gas or compute-unit limits and any optional priority setting.
- Capture successful, failed and retried submissions; excluding failures makes both networks look cheaper.
- Report native units first and USD second, with the token price and timestamp.
- Repeat across a stated period so a quiet block is not mistaken for normal congestion pricing.
On the published descriptions alone, neither network wins every fee scenario. NEAR presents a simple low-cost gas narrative; Solana provides a precise base-fee formula but allows an additional scheduling charge.

Block time, confirmation and finality are different
“Speed” can mean at least four things: how often blocks or slots are produced, when a node first confirms a transaction, when a supermajority agrees on a common root, and when an application treats the result as safe for its own purpose. Comparing one network’s block interval with another network’s finality time mixes unlike measurements.
Solana’s terminology distinguishes confirmation time—the wall-clock interval from a leader creating a tick entry to a confirmed block—from finality, which is reached when two-thirds of stake has a common root. An application that accepts a confirmed transaction may therefore have a different user experience from one that waits for finality.
What NEAR publishes
NEAR’s current protocol overview lists a 600 ms block time and 1.2-second finality. Its 2025 milestones update says finality now occurs in 1.2 seconds and describes the million-TPS figure as a publicly verifiable benchmark. These are NEAR’s own published claims. They indicate the protocol’s target and reported assurance timing, not a neutral measurement of every user transaction under load.

What Solana publishes
The Solana Foundation payments guide cites approximately 400 ms settlement. The guide is written for payment use cases, while Solana’s terminology explains confirmation and finality separately. Treat the 400 ms statement as a payment-oriented published estimate rather than as a direct equivalent to NEAR’s 1.2-second finality claim.

No cited source supplies a neutral test that sends matched transactions to both networks during the same period and reports identical assurance levels. The comparison would need to control for transaction type, geographic location, RPC path, retries, failed submissions, congestion and the definition of “complete.” Without those controls, saying that one chain is definitively faster overstates the evidence.
For a production application, choose the assurance state first. A point-of-sale system may display success after a suitable confirmation; a bridge, exchange or high-value settlement may wait for finality. Measure median and tail latency separately, because an attractive median can hide occasional long waits.
How the architectures differ
NEAR’s sharded design
NEAR presents Nightshade as a sharded architecture in which capacity scales with the number of shards. The current overview lists nine shards and says the network can add or remove shards dynamically. The 2025 ecosystem update says mainnet expanded from six to nine shards, a 50% increase in network throughput according to NEAR’s account.
Sharding can distribute execution and storage work, but an application still needs to account for cross-shard coordination and the behavior of the tools it uses. The relevant question is not simply how many shards exist; it is whether the application’s reads, writes and cross-chain actions map efficiently to that design.

Solana’s single global state
Solana’s DeFi documentation emphasizes a single global state and atomic composition among programs such as decentralized exchanges, lending markets, oracles and perpetuals. Atomicity lets a transaction compose several instructions so that, if any instruction fails, the entire transaction fails and all state changes are reverted.
This model is attractive when an application depends on tightly coordinated operations across protocols. It also means developers must plan for compute limits, account access, priority pricing and the operational demands of a high-throughput shared environment.
Capacity claims versus observed use
NEAR’s 1M TPS figure is a benchmark or scalability claim, not a statement that ordinary users continuously see one million successful transactions per second. The benchmark used NEAR core code, consumer-grade hardware and scripts, according to the 2025 milestones post. Solana’s cited material does not provide a matching capacity number for this comparison.
When evaluating capacity, ask what was counted: transactions or instructions, successful or attempted operations, a synthetic workload or user traffic, and a single machine or a distributed network. Publish the workload and measurement method with any result.
Which ecosystem has a better fit?
NEAR: Intents and chain abstraction
NEAR’s ecosystem material highlights Intents as cross-chain execution infrastructure. A 2025 update reports more than $7 billion in all-time volume, 13 million swaps and more than 125 supported assets. Those are dated issuer figures for the Intents activity described there; they are not directly comparable with a broad Solana DeFi total because the categories and measurement periods differ.

This direction suits products that want users to express an outcome—such as obtaining an asset or moving value across networks—while infrastructure handles the route. Teams should still verify supported assets, solver or execution-provider behavior, settlement guarantees and failure recovery for the exact routes they plan to offer.
Solana: composable DeFi and payments
Solana’s official DeFi guide centers on composable financial applications. Decentralized exchanges, lending markets, oracles and perpetuals can interact within a shared state and an atomic transaction. Its developer portal also groups resources for payments, tokenization, games, templates, migration and infrastructure.
This emphasis is useful for an application whose core value depends on deep on-chain composability, fast payment flows or token issuance. Teams must validate liquidity for their assets, the programs they depend on, and the compute and account requirements of their transaction paths.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Developer operations matter as much as protocol design
The chain is only one part of a production system. Compare the available languages and libraries for your team, wallet and signing support, indexers, testing environments, observability, transaction retry behavior and regional latency. A theoretically suitable chain can become expensive if the team needs unfamiliar tooling or excessive infrastructure work.
Solana’s RPC documentation specifically warns that public shared RPC endpoints are not intended for production workloads. A production deployment should select infrastructure according to request volume, geographic regions, methods, historical-data needs and portability. The same discipline applies to any NEAR deployment: estimate peak load, define service-level requirements and maintain a fallback strategy.
A decision framework for builders
Use the following sequence instead of selecting a chain from a single TPS or fee headline.
- Describe the workload. Classify it as a native transfer, token payments, trading, lending, gaming, tokenization, cross-chain execution or another specific action.
- Set the assurance requirement. Decide whether the user experience needs an initial confirmation or protocol finality, and document the timeout and rollback behavior.
- Model the transaction. List signatures, instructions, gas or compute limits, expected retries and any priority pricing.
- Check composability and assets. Confirm that the contracts, tokens, liquidity venues, wallets and bridge or intent routes your product needs are actually available.
- Test operations. Measure RPC latency from target regions, rate limits, historical-data access, indexing delay and recovery after dropped or failed transactions.
- Compare dated evidence. Use matching definitions and time windows for volume, users, fees and latency; label issuer claims separately from your own measurements.
Common comparison mistakes
- Equating settlement with finality: Solana’s approximately 400 ms payment figure and NEAR’s 1.2-second finality statement describe different concepts.
- Treating a benchmark as daily throughput: NEAR’s million-TPS number comes from a described benchmark, not a guarantee of routine mainnet traffic.
- Quoting one fee for every transaction: NEAR gas use, Solana signature count, priority pricing and token prices all vary.
- Ignoring failed transactions: Solana charges a fee even when a transaction fails, and retry logic can multiply costs on either network.
- Comparing unlike ecosystem totals: NEAR Intents volume and Solana DeFi activity use different scopes and dates.
- Relying on public RPC in production: Shared endpoints can be unsuitable for sustained volume, regional performance or historical queries.
Which network should you choose?
Choose NEAR when
- Your architecture benefits from sharded execution and the ability to expand shard capacity.
- Cross-chain intent execution or chain abstraction is central to the product.
- Your workload fits NEAR’s gas model and you can estimate costs per action rather than depend on a universal dollar price.
- You can validate the required assets, routes and developer tooling in the NEAR ecosystem.
Choose Solana when
- Your application depends on atomic composition across DeFi programs in one global state.
- Payments, tokenization, trading or other high-frequency interactions are the primary use case.
- Your team can manage compute limits, signature-based fees, optional priority pricing and production-grade RPC.
- The required liquidity, wallets, programs and developer resources are stronger in the Solana ecosystem for your target users.
Run a pilot when the answer is close
Build the same narrow workflow on both networks: create accounts, submit the representative transaction, force realistic retries, and record fees in native units. Measure confirmation and finality separately from the same regions over a stated period. Include cold-start behavior, indexing delay and operational incidents. A small controlled pilot will answer questions that headline claims cannot.
Bottom line
NEAR and Solana both target fast, inexpensive settlement, but they optimize different designs. NEAR’s published case rests on sharding, rapid finality and cross-chain Intents; Solana’s rests on a single composable state, payment performance and a large application toolchain. “Cheaper,” “faster” and “better ecosystem” become answerable only after you define the exact transaction, assurance level, assets and operating environment. On the evidence available for October 13, 2026, select by workload and measured production requirements rather than by an isolated TPS, latency or fee headline.
