NEAR charges transaction execution fees in NEAR tokens. Your cost is determined by the gas used by an operation and the network gas price at the time the transaction is processed; the price is recalculated each block and has a protocol floor. Staking means delegating NEAR to validators, not depositing money into a risk-free savings product. Validator rewards, commissions, lock-up conditions, token prices, slashing exposure, application design and bridge security all affect what a user ultimately receives or could lose.
The practical rule is simple: keep enough NEAR for the transaction itself, check the current gas price through an RPC or current wallet interface, verify validator and bridge details before signing, and treat every documented example as a protocol parameter rather than a guaranteed dollar price or personal yield.

How NEAR gas fees work
Gas is a metering system, not a fixed price list
NEAR measures transaction execution in deterministic gas units. The protocol calculates the amount of NEAR charged from two variables: the gas consumed by the operation and the gas price that applies when the block is produced. The same action therefore has a relatively stable gas-unit requirement, while its NEAR cost can change as the network gas price changes. The gas price is recalculated every block from demand and cannot be safely treated as a permanent number copied from an old article. See the NEAR gas documentation for the current mechanism.
Adding more gas to a transaction does not buy priority. Gas is an execution allowance, not a bidding system in which the largest attachment jumps to the front of the queue. Unused gas and eligible price differences are refunded under the protocol rules described by NEAR.

Documented examples at the minimum gas price
NEAR’s documentation gives these examples at its stated minimum gas price. They illustrate protocol calculations, not universal prices in dollars:
| Operation | Documented example | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NEAR transfer | 0.000045 NEAR | Example at the documented minimum gas price; the market value changes with the NEAR price. |
| Function call | Up to 0.1 NEAR | Depends on contract complexity, execution and the applicable gas price. |
| Account creation | 0.007 NEAR | A fixed persistent-state charge described separately from ordinary execution gas. |
The figures and their qualifications come from the NEAR gas documentation, accessed in October 2026. A wallet’s estimate can differ because the transaction may call a more complex contract, use a different gas price or include account-state requirements.
Why creating an account costs extra
“Why does creating an account cost extra?” The answer is that account creation is not simply another transfer. NEAR describes a fixed 0.007 NEAR charge for the persistent account state required by the protocol. That amount is distinct from the execution fee for running a transaction, so it should not be added to a transfer-fee estimate as though it were ordinary gas. Confirm the account type and current protocol rules before sending, because protocol parameters can change.

Refunds and the protocol-version-78 change
When a transaction attaches more gas than execution consumes, the unused amount is refunded according to the protocol’s rules. The documentation also describes a gas-refund fee introduced with protocol version 78. It says the fee remains at zero while projects adapt and presents a planned formula, so readers should verify whether activation or parameters have changed before relying on that statement for a current cost calculation. This is a protocol-policy detail, not a reason to overfund every transaction.

What is the gas price now?
There is no reliable static answer. Because NEAR recalculates the gas price each block, query the network through an RPC endpoint or use a wallet that reports a live estimate immediately before signing. A number displayed in a cached article, screenshot or old tutorial may be obsolete. You still pay in NEAR, and the dollar value depends on the market price of NEAR at the time of payment.
How do I buy gas?
“Buying gas” means obtaining NEAR and keeping it in the account that will submit the transaction. Use a purchase or transfer method available in your jurisdiction, withdraw only to the correct NEAR account format, and leave a small balance for future actions. Before sending funds, check the network selected by the sending service, the destination account, the amount and whether the receiving account already exists. Do not assume that a token held on another chain can automatically pay NEAR execution fees; a cross-chain route may require a supported bridge and may introduce additional costs and risks.
NEAR staking: delegation, rewards and slashing
What staking does
NEAR uses proof of stake. Validators process transactions, participate in consensus and help secure the network. A token holder can delegate NEAR to a validator rather than operating validator infrastructure personally. Delegation gives the validator stake to work with, while the delegator remains exposed to the validator’s terms, performance and the market value of NEAR. The validator documentation explains the protocol role.

The 2.5% figure is not your guaranteed APY
NEAR’s validator page describes a target reward amount equal to 2.5% of total supply on an annualized basis. That is a protocol-level validator-economics target, not a promise that every delegator receives 2.5% on their deposited balance. An individual’s realized result can differ because of validator commission, participation and uptime, the timing of delegation and withdrawal, the validator’s current status, and the market price of NEAR. Rewards are described as being paid regardless of fee burn, but that does not remove those user-level variables.

Before delegating, obtain current terms from the staking interface or validator operator. In particular, check the validator’s commission, current status, unbonding or withdrawal conditions, how rewards are credited, and who controls the keys. A high protocol reward target cannot compensate for an unsuitable validator, an unexpected lock-up or a custody mistake.
Slashing is a network-security mechanism
The validator documentation says validators that misbehave can be slashed, with stake burned. Slashing is intended to discourage behavior that threatens consensus. It is not a guarantee that a delegator’s principal is safe, and it should not be described as an insurance policy. Delegators need to understand how their chosen staking arrangement handles validator penalties and whether they can exit promptly when conditions change.
A practical validator-selection checklist
- Confirm the validator is currently active and accepting delegation.
- Read the commission and any additional operator terms before approving the transaction.
- Check unbonding and withdrawal timing rather than assuming an instant exit.
- Determine whether you retain control of the staking account and recovery keys.
- Review recent participation and operational information from the current staking interface.
- Calculate the net amount you would receive after commission, not the protocol target alone.
There is no single “best” validator for every delegator. The correct comparison is between current commission and status, withdrawal conditions, custody and key control, and the net amount actually paid to you.

How contract execution fees are divided
NEAR’s gas documentation says 30% of gas fees burned during contract execution goes to the contract’s account as a developer incentive. The validator documentation describes the other collected transaction-fee portion, after that contract rebate, as burned. In other words, a contract rebate and a supply burn coexist in the documented model; neither should be presented as though all gas paid by a user is handled identically.

These mechanics matter when discussing token supply, but they do not produce a fixed investment return. The amount of NEAR burned depends on network activity and execution, while the value of any remaining NEAR depends on the market. Validator rewards are a separate protocol-economic flow and should not be confused with the contract rebate.
Gas is paid in NEAR, even when an application uses another token
A decentralized application may display balances or assets issued by a contract, but the account submitting a NEAR transaction still needs to satisfy the network’s execution requirements. Confirm the wallet’s fee-token behavior for the specific application and transaction. If an asset is arriving from another chain, verify that the destination chain and asset representation are supported before treating it as spendable for NEAR fees.
How the network operates—and what that does not guarantee
NEAR documentation describes a network of independent computers, accounts, smart contracts, wallets and frontends. Validators validate and record transactions and execute decentralized code. Those descriptions explain the intended architecture; they are not an independent security audit and do not establish that every wallet, contract, frontend or bridge is equally decentralized or secure. The overview is available in NEAR’s Why NEAR? and building-blocks documentation.

Front-running depends on application design
NEAR’s security guidance says validators can see transactions in the transaction pool before execution. That visibility can create front-running opportunities when transaction ordering changes an outcome—for example, in a contest, a market action or another valuable transaction. It does not mean every NEAR transaction is front-run. The exposure depends on the application’s contract logic, ordering assumptions and mitigation design. Read the front-running guidance before treating a time-sensitive transaction as private.

Cross-chain transfers add bridge risk
Moving an asset between chains is not the same as making a native NEAR transfer. NEAR’s Intents documentation describes the use of Omni Bridge and PoA Bridge for supported routes, including bridge settlement and deposits. Its bridge material characterizes centralized risk as comparable to existing NEP-141 token arrangements. That means a cross-chain transaction adds assumptions about the bridge, supported asset representation, relayers or operators, destination-chain execution and the final account address.
Bridge support and parameters can change. The Intents Bridge page and Intents FAQs should be checked immediately before use. The FAQ recommends starting with a small amount when experimenting. Verify the source chain, destination chain, asset, account and address in the live official interface, and never copy an illustrative address from documentation into a real transfer.
Operational mistakes remain a major loss path
- Sending to the wrong chain or an unsupported asset representation can leave funds inaccessible.
- Entering an incorrect destination account can be irreversible once the transaction settles.
- Signing an unfamiliar contract call can authorize behavior different from a simple transfer.
- Assuming a displayed reward is a guaranteed APY can hide commission, timing and price risk.
- Keeping no NEAR balance can prevent an account holding other assets from paying its next transaction fee.
Safe workflows for common NEAR actions
Before a normal NEAR transfer
- Open a current wallet or RPC-backed interface and confirm the recipient account exactly.
- Check the live gas estimate and keep a small remaining NEAR balance for future transactions.
- Review the amount, recipient and network before signing.
- After submission, use the transaction status shown by the current interface rather than assuming that a pending screen means final settlement.
Before delegating stake
- Compare active validators using current commission, status and participation information.
- Read the unbonding and withdrawal rules for the exact staking mechanism.
- Confirm who controls the keys and how rewards and penalties are handled.
- Delegate a deliberate amount, remembering that NEAR’s 2.5% supply-level target is not a personal yield guarantee.
- Record the validator and terms you accepted so you can reassess them later.
Before using a bridge
- Confirm that the asset and both chains are currently supported by the official bridge interface.
- Check the destination account and address character by character.
- Review bridge, source-chain and destination-chain charges shown at that moment; there is no stable universal bridge fee established by the documentation.
- Test with a small amount first, as the Intents FAQ advises.
- Keep transaction records and wait for bridge settlement before attempting a second transfer.
What to verify when conditions change
Gas prices, protocol versions, validator parameters, bridge support and wallet interfaces are changeable. Recheck the live gas estimate, the current gas-refund policy, validator terms and supported bridge assets each time the transaction is materially different. The documentation pages linked above are the appropriate starting points, but the final amount and available options are those displayed by the current network and interface when you sign.
