A roughly 75,000-year-old Neanderthal from Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan appears to have died when a wooden spear—or similar wooden weapon—pierced the chest. The evidence is consistent with a deliberate attack, but it does not prove murder: a hunting accident remains possible. The same individual had previously survived a serious facial injury, suggesting that other Neanderthals helped during recovery.
What archaeologists found at Shanidar Cave
Emma Pomeroy and colleagues describe the newly identified individual, Shanidar A, in a peer-reviewed study published in Scientific Reports on 15 October 2026. Excavations in 2019 and 2022 recovered a left shoulder blade (scapula), a mostly complete right hand, ribs and seven teeth. The remains belonged to an older adult estimated at about 45 years old; the individual’s sex could not be determined.

Shanidar A lay beneath approximately 7.5 metres (24 feet) of sediment. Its discovery raises the minimum number of Neanderthals known from the cave’s burial cluster to five. The depth and fragmented anatomy made the find difficult, but the scapula preserves the crucial injury.

A circular perforation about 15 millimetres across passes through the left scapula. Researchers refitted broken bone fragments and examined the hole’s rounded outline and fracture pattern. Those features fit impact from a rounded wooden shaft better than a stone-tipped weapon, which would be expected to produce a more angular or lozenge-shaped opening.

The proposed trajectory begins at the front of the chest, travels through the lung and probably major arteries, and exits through the shoulder blade. Cambridge archaeologist Emma Pomeroy said the penetrating injury would have caused rapid death. The study classifies the trauma as perimortem, meaning it occurred around the time of death rather than long before or after.
What the bone proves—and what it does not
| Evidence | Most cautious interpretation |
|---|---|
| Rounded, 15-millimetre scapular perforation | A rounded penetrating object is likely; the shape is compatible with a wooden spear. |
| Refitted fragments and fracture pattern | The hole formed while the bone was fresh, around the time of death. |
| Front-to-back proposed path through the chest | A thrust or projectile could have caused lethal damage to the lung and major vessels. |
| No preserved attacker, weapon or eyewitness evidence | The identity, motive and exact mechanism remain unknown. |
Wood rarely survives in the archaeological record, so the finding is indirect evidence for Middle Palaeolithic wooden technology rather than a recovered spear. The authors say experimental work is still needed to test how much force and what movement would create this particular injury.

Was Shanidar A murdered?
The injury is compatible with lethal interpersonal violence and a front-on attack, which is why the discovery has been described as a possible Neanderthal murder mystery. However, the fossil record cannot establish intent. A person hunting large prey could have suffered an accidental strike, or a weapon could have been thrown or thrust during an encounter whose circumstances are lost.
Accordingly, “possible homicide” or “possible lethal interpersonal violence” is more accurate than an unqualified murder verdict. The study identifies a probable penetrating wooden-weapon injury, not the attacker’s identity or a proven criminal motive.

Evidence that this Neanderthal received care
Shanidar A had an earlier, severe facial injury. One tooth was split, and the tooth preserves calculus and healing-related evidence showing that the individual lived for a substantial period afterward. Surviving such an injury would have been difficult without time to recover.
The researchers interpret that survival as consistent with assistance from other Neanderthals, potentially including preparation of soft food while chewing was painful. This is an inference from the injury, healing and survival—not a direct observation of anyone providing food or nursing. It nevertheless adds to evidence that Neanderthal groups could respond to vulnerable members.

What the burial setting says about Neanderthal behavior
Shanidar Cave is important because earlier finds there helped overturn the image of Neanderthals as incapable of compassion or social ceremony. The new remains join a cluster in which bodies were deposited repeatedly in a shared cave space. Pomeroy and colleagues describe that spatial pattern as evidence of potentially meaningful mortuary behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat wording matters. Repeated deposition and the cluster’s structure do not by themselves prove a symbolic ritual, religious belief or a deliberate cemetery in the modern sense. Interpretations of pollen reported in older Shanidar excavations are also debated, so claims that Neanderthals definitively buried their dead with flowers should remain qualified.
Why this discovery matters
- It documents rare lethal penetrating trauma in a hominin fossil. The 15-millimetre opening and reconstructed path provide unusually specific evidence of how a Neanderthal died.
- It expands evidence for wooden weapons. Because wood normally decays, a wound pattern can preserve technology that leaves no surviving artefact.
- It places violence and care in one life history. The same individual appears to have survived an earlier disabling injury and later suffered a fatal chest wound.
- It adds to the Shanidar mortuary record. With at least five individuals now represented, the cave offers a larger context for studying how Neanderthals handled their dead.
What remains unresolved
- Whether the chest wound came from a deliberate attack, a hunting accident or another encounter.
- Whether the object was a thrusting spear, a projectile or another rounded wooden implement.
- How much practical help Shanidar A received after the facial injury, and from whom.
- Whether the repeated deposits at Shanidar had symbolic meaning or resulted from social and environmental choices that are no longer recoverable.
Shanidar A therefore offers a nuanced picture rather than a simple murder story: a lethal injury that may record interpersonal violence, a prior injury compatible with group care, and a burial context suggesting complex behavior without proving ritual intent.
