Short answer: A consumer DNA test can estimate whether your modern genome contains DNA segments that resemble selected Neanderthal reference sequences. It cannot sequence a Neanderthal fossil from your saliva, recover a complete Neanderthal genome, identify a named Neanderthal ancestor, or diagnose a health condition. The percentage is a statistical estimate whose result depends on the markers, reference genomes and algorithm used.
What a Neanderthal DNA result actually measures
Neanderthal features in a consumer report are calculated from your modern DNA. The service genotypes or sequences parts of your genome, then compares selected positions with a Neanderthal reference genome (or reference panel). An algorithm looks for combinations of variants that are more similar to archaic sequences than to the comparison population used by the service. The output may be a percentage, an estimated number of inherited segments, or a list of selected archaic-associated variants.

This is a downstream application of ancient-genome research. Scientists first extract DNA molecules from Neanderthal fossils, reconstruct fragments into genome sequences, and compare those sequences with genomes from living people. The resulting reference data allow a consumer company to test modern markers; the company is not testing fossil material in your sample.
Because different services examine different markers and use different reference panels and statistical models, their estimates are not guaranteed to match. A reported percentage should therefore be read as an estimate under that service’s method, not as a precise measurement of every Neanderthal-derived base in your genome.

How much Neanderthal DNA do people have?
MedlinePlus Genetics describes about 1–2% Neanderthal DNA in many people with European or Asian backgrounds. The Associated Press reported the same broad 1–2% range for European- and Asian-background populations in 2023. These are population-level estimates, not a diagnostic threshold for an individual.
The number varies with the people sampled, the Neanderthal genomes used as references, the statistical method and the company’s definition of an archaic segment. One service may count only high-confidence segments; another may include additional markers or use a different quality cutoff. Results can also change when a company updates its reference data or algorithm.
Population history matters. Most present-day people with substantial European or Asian ancestry carry some Neanderthal-derived segments because modern humans and Neanderthals interbred after modern humans left Africa. The percentages do not mean that an individual is one or two percent Neanderthal as a separate biological identity; they describe the share of tested DNA that fits the company’s model of Neanderthal ancestry.

The Associated Press has reported about 4–6% Denisovan DNA in many Melanesian populations. A report that lists both categories is estimating similarity to different archaic reference genomes, and the categories should not be added to make a single measure of a person’s identity or ability.
What the evidence can tell us about Neanderthal history
Interbreeding and population relationships
Comparisons between reconstructed Neanderthal genomes and modern genomes established that gene flow occurred between Neanderthals and the ancestors of many living non-African populations. Shared segments can reveal relationships among ancient populations and show that inherited DNA has persisted through many generations.

Traits studied at the variant level
Researchers have investigated archaic-associated variants involved in immune response, metabolism, hair and skin traits, pain sensitivity, fertility and, in some populations, adaptation to high altitude. These findings are generally statistical associations observed across populations or at particular variants. They do not demonstrate that a person with a consumer-test result will have a trait, disease, personality characteristic or performance advantage.
Changes through time
Ancient genomes let researchers compare versions of genes across archaeological populations and living people. That can help test hypotheses about selection, migration and changing environments. A consumer report contains only a small, selected view of this evidence and cannot reproduce the full analysis performed on fossil genomes.
What a percentage cannot establish
- A named ancestor: The result cannot identify “your” Neanderthal, provide a name, or prove that one particular fossil was your direct ancestor.
- When or where a segment entered your family: A percentage normally cannot date an admixture event to a particular generation or locate it to a specific place in your documented family tree.
- A complete archaic genome: Most reports analyze selected markers rather than every position in your DNA. A percentage is not a full reconstruction of an ancient genome.
- Intelligence, strength or evolutionary rank: Neanderthal ancestry does not show that someone is more intelligent, stronger, less intelligent or more “evolved.” Those are not valid conclusions from an ancestry estimate.
- A diagnosis or treatment decision: A result is not a clinical test for cancer, immune disease, fertility, pain disorders or any other condition.
MedlinePlus states that, for now, knowing the percentage inherited from Neanderthal or Denisovan ancestors provides only very limited information. The significance of archaic DNA remains an active area of study, so an association reported in a scientific paper should not be converted into an individual prediction.
Why ancient Neanderthal DNA is difficult to authenticate
Fragmentation and chemical damage
DNA in fossils breaks into short pieces and accumulates chemical changes over thousands of years. A sequencing instrument reads those damaged molecules alongside genuine ancient sequences. Nature’s early Neanderthal-sequencing work identified degradation, chemical damage and contamination avoidance as central technical problems.
Modern contamination
Human DNA can enter a specimen during excavation, handling, extraction, library preparation or later laboratory work. Because a contaminant can look like a real human sequence, ancient-DNA projects use clean-room practices, negative controls and independent estimates of contamination.

Authentication checks
Researchers examine characteristic damage patterns, compare results from independent extracts or laboratories, and measure contamination in mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. The review The Neandertal genome and ancient DNA authenticity notes that sequencing errors can resemble heterozygous positions and be mistaken for contamination. It also warns that contamination introduced after extraction may evade an assay performed only on the extract. These controls are why a published fossil genome requires more than a single sequencing run.

| Question | Consumer DNA test | Ancient-DNA project |
|---|---|---|
| Material analyzed | Saliva or a cheek swab containing your living cells | Molecules recovered from archaeological bone, tooth or other preserved material |
| Main objective | Estimate ancestry, traits or selected health-related variants from modern DNA | Reconstruct and authenticate sequences from an ancient individual or population |
| Reference data | Selected modern markers compared with an archaic reference genome or panel | Multiple fossil extracts, damage patterns, controls and comparative genomes |
| Typical output | An estimate, segment count or variant list | A research genome, contamination assessment and population-level conclusions |
| Can it identify a fossil ancestor? | No | It can establish relationships among sampled populations, but normally cannot prove that a living customer descends from a named fossil individual |
The CDC defines whole-genome sequencing as examining across a person’s DNA. Even if a living person’s whole genome is sequenced, that remains a modern genome; it does not turn the sample into ancient material or replace the contamination controls used in fossil research. Conversely, a fossil project does not provide a personal medical interpretation for every living person who shares a variant.
Why two companies can give different estimates
The FDA notes that direct-to-consumer tests vary in the evidence supporting them and do not necessarily test the same variants. Differences can arise at several points:
- Marker selection: One service may test a compact set of positions, while another analyzes more segments or excludes low-confidence regions.
- Reference genomes: A result depends on which Neanderthal fossils and modern comparison populations are included and how closely those references represent the ancestry being modeled.
- Statistical thresholds: Algorithms choose how much sequence similarity is required before labeling a segment archaic. A stricter threshold usually reports fewer, higher-confidence segments; a broader threshold may report more segments with greater uncertainty.
- Genotyping and sequencing quality: Missing or poorly read positions can prevent a segment from being counted. Different laboratory platforms and quality filters can therefore change the output.
- Updates: A company may revise estimates when it adds reference genomes, changes its model or corrects a pipeline. The same raw sample can receive a new estimate later.
These differences do not automatically mean one report is fraudulent or that the highest number is the most accurate. They show that the number is method-dependent.

- DISCOVER WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE: See how your DNA may influence physical features, sensory preferences, and habits across 30+ traits, including cilantro taste aversion to hair texture to deep sleep.
- TRACE ANCIENT MIGRATIONS: Maternal and Paternal Haplogroup reports follow your ancestors' migration paths across continents over thousands of years (paternal haplogroup requires a Y chromosome). Find out how much of your ancestry can be traced back to the Neanderthals.
- PRIVATE BY DESIGN: Your DNA data is encrypted, protected, and always under your control. Enhanced security measures are implemented to keep your information safe. Subject to 23andMe’s Terms of Service and Privacy Statement at 23andMe online.
- What is analyzed: Ask whether the report uses a defined list of variants, phased segments, genotyping-chip data or whole-genome sequencing.
- Reference populations and algorithm: Look for an explanation of the Neanderthal reference genome or panel, the modern comparison groups and the confidence threshold.
- Uncertainty and revisions: Confirm whether the report shows confidence ranges, explains borderline segments and states how updates are delivered.
- Health-claim validation: If a page connects an archaic variant to a condition, look for clinical validation and the limits of the association. A research association is not a diagnostic result.
- Data retention and deletion: Read whether your raw data are stored, used for research, shared with partners, retained after account closure or deleted on request.
- Consent choices: Check whether research participation is optional and whether withdrawing consent changes use of data already shared.
A kit can be a reasonable way to explore ancestry if you accept that the archaic percentage is an estimate. It is not an appropriate substitute for a clinician-ordered genetic test when the purpose is diagnosis or treatment.
What to do if a report links Neanderthal DNA to health
Separate association from prediction
A variant may be more common in people with a particular immune, metabolic, skin, pain or fertility trait without causing that trait by itself. Effects can depend on other genes, environment, age, sex, medications and chance. A report that says a variant is “associated with” an outcome is not saying the outcome will occur.
Confirm clinically important findings
MedlinePlus advises that direct-to-consumer findings generally need confirmation through a healthcare provider before they support diagnosis or medical decisions. If a report raises a health concern, give the provider the exact variant notation and the test’s limitations. A clinician may order a validated laboratory test, review family history and assess the result in context.
Do not change care from an ancestry percentage
Do not start, stop or alter medication, screening, diet or supplements solely because a report lists Neanderthal ancestry. The percentage itself has no established use as a treatment target.
How to read common report formats
| Report wording | What it usually means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| “You have 1.8% Neanderthal DNA” | The service’s model classified a share of tested markers as matching its archaic reference | That exactly 1.8% of every cell is Neanderthal, or that the value is a fixed biological fact |
| “X Neanderthal segments” | The algorithm detected a stated number of genomic stretches above its threshold | Each segment came from a known fossil or can be assigned to a particular ancestor |
| “Neanderthal variant associated with immunity” | A population study found a statistical relationship involving that variant | You will have a stronger or weaker immune system, or a diagnosed immune disorder |
| “No Neanderthal DNA detected” | No qualifying markers were detected under that company’s panel and threshold | You have no archaic ancestry anywhere in your genome |
Questions a result cannot answer about your family tree
Genealogical testing can sometimes identify relatives by matching shared modern segments, but an archaic estimate is not a relative match. Neanderthals lived tens of thousands of years ago, and the segments inherited by living people have been broken up by recombination over many generations. A consumer report generally cannot tell whether a segment entered through your maternal or paternal line, name the generation in which it arrived, or connect it to a particular archaeological individual.

Practical privacy and family considerations
DNA is identifying information about you and, indirectly, biological relatives. Before submitting a sample, decide whether you are comfortable with long-term storage and possible research use. Read the deletion process carefully: deleting an account may not automatically remove data from analyses already completed or from legally required records. Consider whether relatives have agreed to the potential discovery of unexpected ancestry or family relationships.
Keep a copy of the report’s version, date and methodology. If the service updates its algorithm, you can distinguish a changed estimate from a change in your DNA. Save the original consent and privacy terms if the result may matter for a family or medical discussion.

Neanderthal DNA testing is a statistical comparison between your modern DNA and selected ancient reference sequences. It is useful for illustrating human population history and the persistence of archaic segments, but the percentage is method-dependent and scientifically limited. Ancient-genome research can reveal interbreeding, population relationships and variant-level associations; a consumer report cannot identify a named Neanderthal ancestor, predict your intelligence or strength, or diagnose disease. Treat health-related findings as prompts for professional confirmation, and judge any percentage by the markers, references, uncertainty and privacy terms behind it.
