The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) approved final site and building plans for the White House Visitor Screening Facility on October 1, 2026. The proposal calls for an underground screening center west of Sherman Park and a separate exit building on East Executive Avenue; approval does not mean construction is complete.
What the approved White House screening project includes
The National Capital Planning Commission’s project record describes two parts:
- Underground screening facility: 33,000 square feet on the west side of Sherman Park.
- At-grade exit facility: 4,000 square feet on East Executive Avenue.
The Executive Office of the President submitted the project with the U.S. Secret Service and National Park Service. NCPC says the facility is intended to replace temporary screening under tents and serve public-tour visitors, guests attending large events, White House staff, and contractors. The commission says the project is intended to make screening more comfortable and efficient and that existing temporary security barriers would be removed. Those are stated aims, not measured results.
What final plan approval means
NCPC’s October 1 action is approval of final site and building plans. It is the latest step in a review that also included concept-plan comments on April 2 and preliminary site and building plan approval on September 3, 2026, according to the commission’s project timeline. The action is a planning approval; it does not establish that construction has finished or that the facility is already in use.

What was described at the concept stage
NCPC’s April concept materials described an underground screening area of approximately 33,000 square feet with seven screening lanes and an open floor plan intended to accommodate current processes and equipment while adapting to changing technology. They outlined a route with pre-screening and primary screening below ground, then a tunnel and escalators leading to an exit structure inside the secure fence line. These details come from the concept-stage materials; the October final-action summary confirms the facility’s general components and areas but does not independently confirm every concept detail as part of the final approved design. When could the facility open?
The Associated Press reported that the administration wanted the facility open by July 2028. That is an administration target reported by AP, not a guaranteed opening date in NCPC’s approval summary. The NCPC action record confirms plan approval but does not set an opening date.
