NCAA College Basketball Eligibility Rules: Seasons, Redshirts and Waivers (2026–27)

As of October 4, 2026, NCAA Division I and II eligibility rules are changing: who is covered by the new age-based model depends on when the athlete first enrolls and whether they had eligibility remaining after 2025–26. The new model replaces season counting and athletics redshirts with a continuous eligibility period, but it does not guarantee five years to every player. This guide explains the transition and what athletes should confirm with their school.

Which eligibility rules apply to a player?

There is no single rule that applies to every college basketball player during the transition. The NCAA announced the Division I change on June 23, 2026. Prospects first enrolling full time in fall 2027 or later use the new age-based model. For athletes who had eligibility remaining after the 2025–26 academic year and prospects enrolling in 2026–27, schools compare the former rules with the new model and apply whichever is more favorable to that individual. Athletes who used their final season in 2025–26 do not receive additional eligibility under the stated transition. See the NCAA’s announcement for the transition details.

The new age-based model is described for NCAA Divisions I and II. This guide does not establish eligibility rules for other associations or divisions. For an individual case, the applicable result depends on the athlete’s division, enrollment history, age and birthday timing, competition history, and academic standing.

How the old and new frameworks differ

Question Former Division I framework New Division I and II model
What is counted? Generally, four seasons of competition within a five-year eligibility period, as described in the NCAA’s June 2026 announcement. A continuous eligibility period of up to five years; the model does not count seasons of competition.
When does the period run? The former framework used a five-year eligibility period. Generally from the earlier of initial full-time college enrollment or the NCAA age-based trigger. The age trigger is tied to the academic year following the athlete’s 19th birthday, with the exact timing depending on whether the birthday falls before September 1.
Does a redshirt or nonparticipation pause the clock? Redshirt treatment was part of the former season-counting structure. No. Athletics redshirt rules and season-of-competition limits are eliminated; not competing, transferring, sitting out, or changing teams does not pause the continuous clock.
Can an athlete count on five years? No five-year guarantee is stated beyond the former framework’s general limit. No. “Up to five years” is not a promise of five years of college eligibility for every athlete, particularly if enrollment is delayed.

The NCAA says full-time enrollment can include a domestic or international college or a two-year institution. Read the NCAA Eligibility Center’s Division I and II age-based eligibility explainer for the model’s details.

What a redshirt means under the new model

Under the new Division I and II model, an athletics redshirt does not add a year or stop the eligibility period. The same applies if a player does not compete, transfers, sits out, or changes teams: the continuous clock keeps running.

During the transition, a current athlete may be evaluated under the former framework if it gives them a more favorable outcome. That is a cohort-specific comparison by the school, not a general right to claim a redshirt year under the new model.

When exceptions or waivers may apply

Exceptions under the new model

The NCAA identifies limited exceptions, subject to conditions. Pregnancy may qualify for an exception covering the actual period the athlete cannot compete, with medical documentation. Active-duty military service, an official religious mission, or a similar service commitment may also qualify when the athlete does not compete in organized competition during the relevant service. These are not automatic extensions; the school’s compliance staff can advise on how the conditions apply.

Former-rule waiver deadline

For circumstances occurring during or before the 2025–26 academic year, the NCAA’s June 2026 announcement set July 31, 2026, as the deadline for schools to submit former-rule season-of-competition or eligibility-clock-extension waiver requests with supporting documentation. The announcement says those former-rule waivers are no longer available after that date. The NCAA maintains reinstatement and waiver guidance; an athlete with a potential individual claim should work through their school’s compliance office.

Eligibility time and academic certification are separate

Having time left in an eligibility period does not by itself mean an athlete is cleared to compete. Academic and other athletics requirements continue under the new model. For example, Division I initial eligibility guidance includes core-course and progression requirements. The athlete’s school handles eligibility questions, and relevant new enrollees may also need certification through the NCAA Eligibility Center. See the NCAA’s Division I initial eligibility requirements.

What to confirm with the school

  1. Identify the applicable division and cohort. Confirm whether the athlete is in Division I or II, when they first enrolled full time, and whether they had eligibility remaining after 2025–26.
  2. Establish the age-based start date if relevant. Provide the athlete’s date of birth and first full-time enrollment date; the earlier trigger generally starts the new continuous period.
  3. Ask for the transition comparison. If the athlete is among those eligible for a transition evaluation, ask the compliance office to determine which framework is more favorable based on the full record.
  4. Check academic and other certification requirements separately. Confirm competition clearance rather than relying only on a count of years or seasons remaining.
  5. Raise any exception or waiver issue promptly. Share documentation with compliance staff; former-rule waiver requests for circumstances through 2025–26 were subject to the July 31, 2026 deadline.
