NBN plans: How to choose the right one for your household

There is no single best NBN plan for every home. The right choice depends on which services are available at your address, how many people use the internet at once, and what they do online—especially in the evening. Compare providers’ expected busy-period speeds, Key Facts Sheets, total costs and remedies if the service falls short, rather than choosing by speed-tier name alone.

Start with what is available at your address

NBN availability and speed tiers vary by location and access technology. Check your exact service address, then ask providers which retail plans they currently offer there. NBN directs customers to their provider for plan details, pricing, orders and ongoing support. NBN Co explains how network technology affects service, and its speed guidance notes that not every tier is available everywhere.

Do not treat fixed-line, fixed-wireless and satellite services as interchangeable. Their performance characteristics differ; NBN specifically flags latency for satellite services. Ask the provider what to expect for the technology serving your home, at peak and off-peak times.

Work out what your household needs at the same time

Make a practical list of the people, devices and activities likely to overlap during a busy evening. A household with one person browsing and another streaming has a different workload from one with several simultaneous video calls, high-resolution streams, online games and cloud backups. NBN recommends considering household users, devices and activities when selecting a plan.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Count people likely to be online simultaneously, not just everyone who lives in the home.
  • Include televisions, computers, phones, consoles and smart devices that are actively using the connection.
  • Note demanding tasks such as video meetings, large downloads and uploads, or multiple streams.
  • Consider upload needs as well as download needs if you regularly make video calls or send large files; ask providers about upload speeds.

This workload is a way to narrow your options, not a promise that a particular tier will perform identically in every home. Provider network design, access technology and household equipment can all affect the experience.

Compare expected speeds, not just tier labels

Ask for the plan’s expected download speed during busy evening periods and read its Key Facts Sheet. ACMA says providers must give consumers these sheets, which include expected busy-period speeds, supported uses, factors that affect speed and information about services that may not work during a power failure. The ACMA consumer protections page explains the information telcos must provide.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Compare the expected busy-period figure across plans, and ask about off-peak performance and upload speed where relevant. A plan’s advertised tier is not the same thing as a guarantee of the speed you will experience at every moment. NBN advises customers to ask providers about actual peak and off-peak speeds; its speed and performance guidance also discusses factors that influence service.

Use national speed results as context, not a personal forecast

In a release published 17 June 2026, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reported that fixed-line NBN households averaged 99.4% of their plan’s download speed during peak evening periods. This is an aggregate result for the measured fixed-line services, not a prediction or guarantee for an individual address. The ACCC said the release was the final publication of its long-running Measuring Broadband Australia program. Read the ACCC’s June 2026 release.

The ACCC’s latest performance page reports fixed-wireless users averaging 83.8% of plan download speeds during busy hours in its latest reporting period. That result applies to fixed-wireless services, not fixed-line households, and should not be used as a direct comparison of a particular provider or address. See the ACCC broadband performance data.

A separate ACCC report published 2 April 2026 found fixed-line services measured in December 2025 averaged 98.5% of plan speed during busy hours. That is a result for that measurement period; it is not a current individual service estimate. Read the December 2025 measurement summary.

Ask what happens if the service is too slow

Before signing up, ask the provider what options or remedies apply if the service cannot deliver the speed specified for the plan. Keep the answer with your plan documents. If an existing connection seems slow, NBN recommends testing it during both peak and off-peak periods and discussing the results with your provider. A repeatable comparison at different times can help distinguish a busy-period issue from a problem that persists throughout the day.

Check Wi-Fi and power-related constraints separately

A slow connection in one room does not by itself establish that the NBN plan is too small. Equipment quality can affect the experience, and poor Wi-Fi coverage within the home is a separate issue from the service delivered to the modem. Diagnose where the slowdown occurs before replacing equipment: a new router is not a guaranteed fix for an undersized plan, a network fault or a coverage problem.

Ask whether alarms or medical services you rely on are compatible with the proposed service. Also check their power requirements: services that depend on powered equipment may be affected during an outage. The plan’s Key Facts Sheet should identify services that will not work during a power failure.

A practical order for choosing

  1. Check the address. Confirm the available NBN technology and ask providers which retail tiers they currently offer at that location.
  2. Describe the evening workload. List simultaneous users, devices and activities, including upload-heavy tasks.
  3. Compare Key Facts Sheets. Check expected busy-period download speeds, supported uses and stated limitations; ask about uploads and off-peak performance.
  4. Compare complete costs and terms. Verify ongoing and promotional prices, equipment and setup costs, and cancellation conditions with the provider.
  5. Confirm support and remedies. Ask what happens if the service does not reach the plan’s specified speed, and check compatibility for essential services.
